NORWICH CITY
CARROW ROADFOOTBALL CLUB

PRESENTSSELLEBRITY™ SOCCER
Welcome to Jamie’s Game (and of course thanks for buying a programme!)
Yet again we’ve got a great afternoon lined up with music, entertainment, and of course a game of football to fit in somewhere in between. This is our fourth time out – who remembers that magical night in 2013 when Jamie scored the winner? It moved all of us, and we’ve pushed on from there to make Jamie’s Game a prominent date in the Norfolk events calendar. We’ve had about 25,000 people come out
- we couldn’t put the event on without your support. Thanks also to our celebrities who give up their time free of charge to play for this great cause. We’ll give our best effort to put on a good show, so please make as much noise as possible – it really does help!
Enjoy the day.
Darren Eadie & Kevin Cooper
to support over the first three matches, and we’ve raised over £200,000 for CSF to help disadvantaged and disabled people in Norfolk achieve their goals through sport.
This year we’re expecting nine ex-Canaries to lace up their boots and join the fun, meaning we could be in for a competitive afternoon. It’ll certainly begin light-heartedly, but none of these boys enjoy being on a losing team!
A huge thanks to our sponsors, Regency Security Group Ltd, Fisher Health Care, 4Sports Group, Errea, Langley Football Academy, and Norfolk Premier Coachworks

joined Championship side Wigan Athletic for
around £2,000,000 in 2013. Despite scoring on his
debut, his time at the Latics was largely plagued
by injuries and included loan spells at Huddersfield
Town, Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
This February, he departed Wigan for a second spell
at Rochdale, the club where Holt first made his
major break-through as a player (scoring 34 league
goals in 75 appearances.)
And while the onus is, of course, on raising money
for the Foundation, the stakes are high, with neither
Drury or Holt wanting to lose to the other.
Drury, in particular, is relishing the opportunity to
get one over his ex-teammate:
We’re both very competitive by nature. There’s been a bit of back
and forth already and I know that neither of us will want to be on the losing team.
We’ll probably arrange some sort of forfeit for the loser, which should make things interesting!” The 37-year-old, who left City in 2012, now works at Carrow Road for the Community Sports Foundation full-time, along with work for the club on
A combined 529 appearances, four Player of the Year awards and fifteen years of service: Carrow Road was certainly happy-hunting
grounds for returning Canary legends, and today’s co-captains, Grant Holt and Adam Drury. The pair’s City careers overlapped for three memorable years under Paul Lambert, an era which saw two back-to-back promotions lift Norwich City from League One to the Premier League. Today will be the first time they’ve shared the Carrow Road pitch since Drury’s testimonial in 2012. This time, however, the two Canary icons will be facing up on opposite sides: Drury is Calum Best’s co-captain, while Holt will be supporting 2015 man of the match Jim Chapman. Returning to Carrow Road for Jamie’s Game had always been something Grant Holt has wanted to do, since the game was devised in 2013. “It’s been disappointing. I wanted to do it last year, but unfortunately circumstances at the end of the season meant I couldn’t, so I’m happy the opportunity is there this year.”
“I think everyone knows the bit of a bond that me and Jamie have, it’s been well documented,” says Grant. Holt first met Jamie during player visits to the Foundation’s disability programmes, and even dedicated a celebration to the youngster in 2011. “I’m looking forward to getting back out onto that pitch!” Following his highly successful time at the Canaries, Grant Holt
match days, following spells at Bradford City and Leeds United.
Drury, who made 361 appearances for the Canaries across 11 years, is the Lead Coach for the CSF’s Academy shadow squad, as well as an ambassador for the charity. As well as Drury and Holt, a record number of ex-Canaries will also be taking part in Jamie’s Game this year. These include Darren Huckerby, Ruel Fox, Dean Ashton, Jamie Cureton and Darren Eadie, whose company Sellebrity Soccer help organise the day. Jamie’s Game debutant Michael Nelson, who currently plays for League Two side Barnet, as

well as former City midfielder and current first-team
coach Gary Holt will also be joining the ranks of the
ex-City contingent this year.
Adam Drury is looking forward to reuniting with
some of his former teammates – during his 12 year
tenure at the club he played alongside eight of the
ten Canaries at Jamie’s Game this year.
“I keep in contact with a lot of the guys. I’ve
actually interviewed most of them in the past year
[Drury is also the host of Huckerby Lounge on match days]. It’ll be good to see Michael and Curo again though – they’ve obviously both been playing this season so I haven’t managed to catch up with them in a while.”
“For me in particular, there’s almost two different eras of City players that I’ve played with comingPromotion chasing City were taking on
bottom of the table Preston when a curious goal celebration following a Grant Holt equaliser marked a memorable moment for young Jamie Abbott.
Grant had met Jamie earlier that week on a visit to one of CSF’s disability programmes, and Jamie wasted no time showing the City striker his favourite celebration.
Grant, who was taken with the moves, recalls: “I said to him, ‘Look, if I score at the weekend - we were playing Preston - I’ll do your celebration.’” True to form, Holt scored and made his way to the corner where he did the now legendary “Jamie’s celebration”.
“The week after Jamie’s Dad thanked me, and said it was the happiest he’s ever seen him in his life,” said Holt.
Jamie returned the favour during the first Jamie’s Game in 2013 – his last-minute winning penalty rounded off with one of Holt’s trademark celebrations.

on display from the celebs with Jake Wood and Dan
Osborne, in particular, catching his eye.
“I remember being surprised by how competitive
some of the celebrities were, and how hungry they
were to win. It rubs off into the match in a good
way. The big crowd and superb support from the
fans really adds to the match, and you can really
feel it on the pitch.”
Jamie’s Game 27
Mick’s ZoneWriter, broadcaster and CSF Trustee Mick Dennis talks Jamie’s Game
In more recent years, when I’ve been far too old
and fat to play in similar games, I’ve had a more
charitable attitude to them — and the fact that
I am a qualified referee has allowed me to be
involved in some great occasions. After all,
being old and fat doesn’t stop referees.
When ex-World Cup ref Graham Poll was
asked to help with a big charity game at
Old Trafford, he invited me to be one of
his assistants. The Sir Alex Ferguson stand
was pretty full, but only a few thousand or
so reminded me of my corpulence with a
song about pies.
In each of the last two years I’ve been an
assistant ref for Jamie’s Game. They used
to call that “running the line”, but with me
involved, there’s not much running.
Two years ago, Iwan Roberts was playing at centre
back for one team and Dean Ashton was playing
up front for the opposition: two, former Norwich
greats. What was I supposed to do? I didn’t want
to flag Deano offside, but of course I wanted to
help Iwan. In the end, I decided
to try and give accurate decisions.
Now, that’s something that could
catch on.
That was the year that Huckerby
scored so many goals that the
organisers almost suggested
getting him to change sides so
as to keep the contest balanced.
My first involvement with charity games was as a member of a media team who used to play a
“showbiz” side at Yarmouth Town’s Wellesley Recreation Ground each year in the summer.
The captain and organiser of the celebrity team
was Dennis Waterman, who was at the peak of
his fame because of the huge success of two TV
shows: The Sweeney and Minder.
The annual match used to draw a crowd of at least
5,000, which for the collection of over-weight, unfit
reporters and photographers in the media team,
was a big deal. Both sides took the game seriously.
One year, Fulham footballer Teddy Maybank came
along with the Waterman XI, with no intention
of playing. But, with the Press boys winning, he
suddenly appeared on the touchline — still in his
Levi corduroy jeans, t-shirt and trainers. I was near
where he was standing.
“What are you doing?”
I asked. “I’m going to
come on and score a
couple of quick goals,”
he said.
I’m ashamed to say
that my reply carried
so much menace that
he changed his mind.
But there’s a serious side to Jamie’s Game. I first
really spent time with Jamie, who has Down’s
Syndrome, when he and I took part in another
fundraising event for the Norwich Community
Sports Foundation, the Norfolk Coastal Challenge:
an attempt to walk 48
miles in 24 hours, from
Hunstanton to Cromer.
Let’s just say that
neither Jamie nor I got
all the way around. But
I did see what being
involved meant to him,
and how his boundless
enthusiasm was
infectious for the rest
of us.
The Community Sports
Foundation’s work with
folk with Down’s Syndrome is just part of a huge
list of schemes and programmes through which
the CSF uses the power of football and the Norwich
City “brand” to engage with, and help, some of
the most disadvantaged people in Norfolk. And
because the celebs who play in Jamie’s Game
bring a lot of people to Carrow Road who might
not otherwise come, it helps spread the word —
and in the three matches before today has already
raised more than £200,000.
Thank you for coming today. Just by being here,
you’re helping some important and worthwhile
work. I can’t be present this year — so feel free
to shout rude things at the assistant refs.
