E ven as India awaits the com-merciallaunchofRemdesivir,US drug major Gilead Scien-

ces is studying other molecules likerheumatoidarthritisdrugs—Barici-tinib and Tocilizumab — as combi-nation therapieswithRemdesivir.

Patient recruitment for theTocilizumab combination therapystudywill begin thismonth.

Meanwhile, the company said itapplied for a new drug application(NDA) in India for Remdesivir inorder to support the voluntary lice-nseesbased in India.

For this, Gilead recently signednon-exclusive voluntary licensingagreements to further expand sup-plyofthedrug.Itcouldnotcommentona timeline for launching thedrugin the Indianmarket.

AGileadspokespersonsaid,“ThetimelinetogetRemdesivir toIndianpatients that need itwill depend onthe licensees. Our individual licen-sees will also file applications withthe Central Drugs Standard ControlOrganisation (CDSCO) to manufac-tureandsell remdesivir,whilewaiv-ingtherequirementforundertakinglocal clinical trials.”

Licensees here — Cipla, HeteroLabs, Jubilant Lifesciences andMylan— are yet to get a marketingauthorisation for remdesivir.

Company sources indicate thatthey are readywith the product andare awaiting clarity from the DrugController General of India (DCGI)on animal toxicology study require-ments. The company cannot startcommercial productionwithout theproduct licence from the drug con-troller.

Meanwhile, some states in Indialike Maharashtra that are severelyaffected by the virus have indicatedthat they are open to sourcing thedrug from other countries likeBangladesh ifneedbeatacostof ~12crore for 10,000 vials, or around~12,000per vial. UnderWorldTradeOrganizationprovisions,lesserdevel-oped countries like Bangladesh canproducegenericversionsofpatenteddrugswithout seekinga licence.

Even as patients here await thedrugtobemadeavailableinthemar-ket, its innovator has started work-ingonotherpotential combinationswith the drug and expects resultssoon. Experts feel that this is imper-ativeasthenewcoronavirusmutatesfast and one has to keep looking fornewdrugs tocombat it.

A scientist working on repur-posed drugs in the department ofscience and technology, Govern-ment of India said that this virus ismutatingquite fast.

“Thedrugswearetryingtouseonpatientstoimproverecoveryarebasi-cally using a pathway to stop orreduce the virus from replicatinginside a human cell. As the virusmutates, a drug’s pathway may notwork and thus it may lose efficacy.We would have to keep looking fornewdrugs,”he said.

After Remdesivir, an antiviraldrugoriginallydevelopedforEbola,came into limelight for being effec-tive in recovery of Covid-19 cases,theUScompanystartedworkingonother drugs that could be used as acombinationwith theprimarydrugRemdesivirtohelpcriticallyillCovidpatients.Thespokespersonsaid,“Werecognise that combination thera-pies may be required to further im-prove outcomes for patients with

Covid-19whoarecritically ill.Weareactively exploring additional stud-ies of Remdesivir in combinationwithotherdrugsandwillshareinfor-mationas it becomesavailable.”

Thespokespersonalsoaddedthatatthisstage,however,thehighestpri-ority is the clinical development ofRemdesivirtogetherwithongoinginvitro screening of other antiviralsagainstthevirusthatcausesCovid-19.“While we are studying Remdesivir

and monitoring emerging data onother drugs being explored to treatpatientswithCovid-19.NationalInst-ituteofAllergyandInfectiousDisea-seswill beevaluatingacombinationof Remdesivir and Baricitinib in anupcoming study. We will share fur-therdetailsonplannedstudiesinthenear future,” thepersonsaid.

Gileadhasteamedupwithanoth-er multinational Roche and alreadyannounced clinical collaboration to

evaluateRoche’stocilizumab(soldasActemra)asapotentialcombinationtreatment forCovid-19.

“The Remdacta study is a ran-domised,double-blind,placebo-con-trolledPhase3clinicaltrialevaluatingthesafetyandefficacyofRemdesivirplusintravenousTocilizumabinhos-pitalisedpatientswithsevereCovid-19pneumonia.Thetrial isbeingcon-ductedglobally.”

AswelearnmoreaboutCovid-19,

weknowthatsomepatientsdevelopacute respiratory distress syndrome(ARDS), a severe inflammatory dis-ease of the lungs, causing direct inj-ury that leads to shortness of breathandrapidbreathing.

“This study aims to determinewhether patientswith severeCovid-19mayachieveadditionalbenefitbycombiningRemdesivirwithTociliz-umab to inhibit these inflammatoryresponses,”Gileadsaid.

PanaceaBiotec,aNewDelhi-basedvaccinemaker,hasfor-meda50:50jointventure(JV)withNasdaq-listedRefanatodevelop,manufacture,andmarketapotentialcureforthevirus.

Panacea’ssharesjumped20percentonWednesday,closingat~202.8ontheBSE.Thefirmissettomake500milliondosesofthevaccine,whichwill thenbesuppliedtotheJV(basedintheRepublicofIreland).Thiswillbeawhollyinactivevirus-basedvaccine,which,accordingtoManagingDirectorRajeshJain,isarobustand“time-testedtechnology”.

“Wechosethisoverothersbecauseit isarobust,time-testedtechnology,andtherearenochancesoffailureintermsofefficacy.Infact,this

approachhasamuchhigherprobabilitythananyothermodernvaccinebeingtouted,”heclaimed.

Jainfurtheraddedthatitwaseasytoscaleupintermsofproduction,andconvenienttotransportthesame.Therawmaterialwillbemadeatthefirm’sPunjabfacility,whilethefinalvaccinewillbemadeatBaddi(Himachal).

Hero MotoCorp has pared itscapitalexpenditureforthecur-rent fiscal (financialyear2020-21, orFY21) to ~600croreas themarketleaderseekstocutcostsand conserve cash amid thepandemic,thecompany’sman-agementsaidinaninvestorcallonWednesday.

Thecapexreductionwillbeapplicable in all areas includ-ingcapacityexpansionandren-ovation,exceptforresearchanddevelopment, the firm said.“Earlier,ourprojectedcapexforthe current year was ~1,000crore.Wehaverationaliseditto~600croreforthecurrentyear,”saidNiranjanGupta,chieffina-ncialofficeratHeroMotoCorp.

Touchinguponthedemandscenarioaftereasingofthelock-down, officials said the retailuptickhasbeenveryencourag-ingandHerohopes toclock80

Ore preparation workers at TataSteel’s Dutch operations went onstrikeonWednesdaydemandingpro-tection from job cuts. “It is the firsttime in 28 years that people at TataSteel IJmuiden are on strike,” aspokesperson ofDutch labour unionFNV said.

Theworkers are strikingat a timewhen the steel industry is facingheadwinds with major customersshut. Theunionwants, amongotherthings, the guarantee that there willbe no redundancies.

The union wants agreements inthe Employment Pact be extendedtill 2026.FNVsaidthat theemployeesdo not want Tata Steel NetherlandsandTata Steel UK to be combined.
