Happy New Year Everyone! As I write this report we are closing in on Christmas 2014...but as you read this, all of that Christmas stuff is in the rear-view mirror and you will now be trying to keep in good faith all those resolutions you made for the New Year. So there goes another year and hopefully is was a good one for you. No doubt some of us will have lost friends and family members this past year and yet others of us experienced the miracle of new life with new grandchildren or maybe even new great grandchildren joining you. CLUB NEWS

Such is the cycle of life and as we advance another year we must focus on getting

the most out of each and every upcoming one that is left .

A number of you have commented to me on the loss of our Christmas luncheon

and our Christmas and New Years dances that we did not schedule this past

year. As your executive we worked closely with the Special Events Team in

making these decisions. These kinds of major functions require a lot of time and

eff ort and the costs of putting them on are steadily increasing. These costs of

course have to be passed along in the ticket prices and as such we have found

a noticeable drop in interest over the last few years due to the increased prices.

However, we would always have another look at reinventing these functions if

the interest is there. I would appreciate any input that membership may have

on this matter. Remember that we are here for your benefi t and what we do and

plan is always with the membership in mind. I would like to remind you that our

Executive Meeting minutes are always posted in the lounge for your information

along with the latest fi nancial reports that will tell you what we are doing with your

money......it’s up to you to keep yourself advised and informed.

Please be reminded that it is AGM time again. The 2015 AGM is scheduled for

Wednesday February 11th @ 1pm in the Rotary Hall. This is your opportunity

to speak your mind if you wish and it is also your opportunity to elect a new

executive. If you wish to become involved in the new executive, please speak to

Vice President Nettie Webers about the process.

Don’t forget the next Evergreen Trash & Treasures Sale. It will take place on

January 25th from 9 to 2 in the Conference Hall. If you wish to sell, you can rent

a table for only $20. It’s a giant indoor market that you should not miss weather

a buyer or a seller......and please note that the nursing students will be back with

us from January through March

Kudos to our newest Volunteer of the Month, Betty Annand. Betty has been a

stalwart and very giving volunteer for many years now and a most detailed article

about her involvement in the Evergreen Club was in the previous December

newsletter. “Well Done” Betty.....and thank you for your past and ongoing eff orts

on behalf of the club.

A bus station is where a bus stops.....a train station is where a train stops.... and

on my desk I have a work station.......so-long for now....gk

for a player to play all the dominoes

from his or her hand onto one or

more chains, or “trains” emanating

from a central hub or “station”.

Instruction provided. There are usually

about 3 tables of play. If you want

to have some mid-week fun, come

The choristers just keep getting more

members. Maybe its because we have

so much fun singing the old songs we

all love and know. Every month we try

a new song or two just for a challenge

and soon they are old favorites as

well. We sang at the Filberg Lodge

on November 30 and enjoyed the

fresh air and hot apple cider. Why

not join us on Friday mornings from

10am till 11:30 am in the Rotary

Hall of the Filberg Centre. You may

end up enjoying yourself as well.

See ya there !!!

Choristers Mah-jongMah-jong is an ancient Chinese tile

game of skill, strategy, and calculation

that and involves a certain degree of

chance. It is somewhat similar to the

card game rummy. It is played every

Tuesday in the craft room. We arrive

at 12:15 to set up the tiles and arrange

seating. We play in groups of 3 or 4.

Cost is a 25 cent drop-in fee, plus 20

cents for the game. New players are

welcome, so please come and join

us and learn this fun and interesting

game.

The start of another year, can you

believe it? A good time to thank

the Evergreen staff for all their help.

Our Lounge Wall topic for January is

Refl ections and I think that the Club

has done a nice job. We hope you

enjoy the selection and will continue

to vote for the People’s Choice which

seems to be attracting more interest

each time we hang our eff orts. Thank

you for your interest. One topic closes

and another begins and in March we

will hang a selection of photographs

on Ropes. We enjoyed a lunchtime

meal out together in the middle of

December showing we aren’t always

peering through the viewfi nder. We

had one photoshoot, this time in

downtown Courtenay looking at

the Christmas decorations and then

to the Williamson Road area where

the residents always put on a pretty

spectacular show. We completed a

series of three DVDs on Composition

that Joel Sartore produced. He is a top

National Geographic photographer,

quite the guy. We seem to gain

a new member at most meetings

which is very gratifying and we invite

all interested parties to come to our

meetings and learn to improve their

knowledge and skills. We meet every

fi rst and third Tuesday in the month in

the Soroptimist Lounge at 1.00 p.m.

We will continue with our special

Lightroom Workshops starting at 12

noon. See you there.

A new year is starting. Why not start

good exercise and lovely sites to see

on the back roads. We go out every

Friday Night Dances

We have a regular crowd of about

50 come to our dances, sometimes

more, sometimes less, depending on

what you are up to and what band is

playing that evening.

It may take a visit or two to get to know

us and enjoy others, while dancing.

Our door is open about 6:30 pm for

us and band set-up, dancing starts at

7:30 pm till 9:00 pm for a break, the

band needs to catch their breath. So

we have coff ee or tea and cookies in

the Lounge with more time to visit with

friends. Then, back to the Rotory Hall

Dance Floor till 10:30 pm.

Our Evergreen Clubs are run by

volunteers so, many stay to help with

the clean-up, put away tables and

chairs and to thank the Custodian on

duty for their help in making our time

at the Filberg Centre a good one.

Members $5.00 and Non-members

$7.00 to cover the cost of the band

AND cookies and coff ee.

We hope everyone had a very Merry

Christmas and enjoyed welcoming in

the New Year. We are still working on

two quilts. We have managed to gain

several quilters, but can always use

more. One of our quilters from several

years old. “So much fabric, so little

you a wonderful Christmas and the

very best for the New Year. I feel we

have had a good year saying hello to

new members and welcoming old

members that drift back to us when

Golf is no longer possible. We had

a great “Playdate” two weeks ago,

welcoming people from Port Alberni,

Nanaimo and Campbell River. We all

enjoyed sandwiches, cake and juice,

but most of all we enjoyed the love of

the game. Ed Schum is interested in a

day trip to Port Alberni in his Van (when

the weather is more predictable), so

I’ll be polling the members to see who

is interested.

We play on Monday 11:30am –

Tuesdays, January 13th & January 27th ,2015 , 4:30-6:15 pm Rotary HallDecember saw us wind down our

year with some playing, singing and

some great food, which was enjoyed

by all. We have gotten good enough

to actually be invited out to play at

several venues. This is always fun

for us, and those who listen seem to

enjoy us as well. We all look forward

to doing this more in the New Year.

Please feel free to come and join our

group. We are a non-judgmental

group of many beginners, right up

to the very accomplished player.

Our aim is to have fun singing, and

playing the uke. We have a loaner

uke, which any novice may borrow

to take home a couple of times, and

see if they would like to go further

with us.

Our music is sent to us via email,

so gives us much time to practice.

Almost every song is one we

recognize from our teens, or adult

life. We start each session with songs

that have fairly easy chords. The last

hour we attempt songs that have a bit

more complicated chord.......even

the diffi cult chords become easy with

a bit of practice.

you can pop in and have a chat with

Welcome to 2015. So glad you could

make it. I suppose, like the rest of us,

you have made a commitment to do

things diff erent this year, eating more

vegetables and less desserts, walking

more, cleaning out that hall closet,

etc, etc. Good luck with that!! Just

make sure you have more fun this year

and the rest will sort itself out.

We, in the painting group are having

fun and I know we will continue to

have fun in 2015. Painting is a great

way to shake off the blues (no pun

Ginny & Fred Greene

‘They put the Greene in Evergreen!’Celebrating Fred & Ginny Greene is

the perfect way to bring in the New Year! Fred joined the club for a few years back

in the 90’s and returned again as an active member since 2000. Ginny joined

2001. Ginny had moved here from Port Alice and a group of her friends thought

it would be good for her to get out and go play darts with them. The couple met

at the club and hit it off . Fred’s version was, “We got to know each other through

playing darts at the Evergreen Club. It started with Ginny having some problems

with her house. I came over to help out, she made me dinner, and the rest is

history.” Ginny’s version, “I had to play dumb. I was like... a caulking gun? What?

I have to put it where?” They met March 2001 and married October 2001, a true

Evergreen Club romance! They really were meant to fi nd each other aft er losing

their spouse’s. It turns out Ginny’s son and Fred’s daughter is born the same year

and same month. What a coincidence! Ginny took over the darts club in 2004

and does the organizing side of things with Fred doing the grunt work. Bill Footit

comments, “Fred and Ginny are so well organized! They keep everyone really

happy. They have a good sense of humour especially when darts aren’t going

so well. Or, they get really excited when they do go well!” The Greene’s have

also been the Senior Games Coordinators for the past four years for darts. The

role includes many things from qualifying players, communications to fi nding

replacements if needed. Ginny recalls, “I had always volunteered in Port Alice;

treasurer of the Legion Auxiliary- 25 yr life member, Curling Club treasurer, 29 yr

volunteer of the Community Club. I did the general running of it and spent time as

treasurer and secretary.” Ginny got burnt out with volunteering but the Evergreen

Club sure benefi ted when she was ready to give back again. Fred’s volunteer

background included running the badminton at the CRA, being involved with

youth skating programs, church council and was a volunteer fi reman. Ginny has

also volunteered for the last four years in the Evergreen Kitchen (in the past Fred

spared for the kitchen and helped as well). You’ll also see both volunteering for

many of the Evergreen Pancake Breakfasts. Fred has served three years on the

Evergreen Executive as a director and particularly enjoys the role of presenting

the $500 Evergreen Club bursary to a NIC nursing student. They also play Texas

Hold em and like socializing in the Lounge with other members. Fred says, “It’s a

good place to know what’s going on. Good gossip.” Just as he is being quoted

as saying that, Susan Murphy comes in and announces “It’s boil water advisory

again.” Fred laughs, “See! You fi nd out everything here fi rst!” Thank you Fred

& Ginny!
