He will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God Himself will be with them; and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” (Revelation 21:3-4) Then Jesus, sitting upon the great throne of God, spoke to St. John to say: “Behold, I make all things new.” (Revelation 21:5) At the beginning of the new year it is good for all of us to read this very beautiful passage in its entirety, from the beginning of Ch. 21 to the end of the Book of Revelation. ALL THINGS NEW

In the Apocalypse of St John (the Book of Revelation), Chapter 21, St. John describes his vision of a new

Heaven and a new Earth. As the first Earth passed away, St. John saw the holy city—a New Jerusalem—

coming down from Heaven. Then there was a loud voice from Heaven saying,

“Behold, the dwelling of God is with men. He will dwell with them, and they shall be his people,

and God Himself will be with them; and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death

shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain anymore, for the former

things have passed away.” (Revelation 21:3-4)

Then Jesus, sitting upon the great throne of God, spoke to St. John to say:

“Behold, I make all things new.” (Revelation 21:5)

At the beginning of the new year it is good for all of us to read this very beautiful passage in its entirety, from

the beginning of Ch. 21 to the end of the Book of Revelation. These words are not only intended to show us

how the world will end, but how our own life is to begin, here and now.

When Jesus promises to make all things new, it is true in our daily lives and not simply in the future. We were

baptized into Christ; therefore, we were re-created. We no longer share the ways of the world, but have a new

life. St. Paul writes,

“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, behold, the new

has come.” (II Corinthians 5:17)

At the new year we can remember that new years’ resolutions may be good, but even better is the fact that God

has re-created us, and is re-creating us anew every day. As St. Paul says, this is not something we do ourselves,

but it comes from God. We pray for the Holy Spirit to renew us constantly. It is interesting that even the cells

of our bodies are renewing themselves at every moment in our lives. Spiritually, we are to be the same.

Renewal does not mean that we stop being ourselves, but that we build on what went before. We awaken each

morning in new ways to the precious gift of life, and to new life. If we live in the Holy Spirit, we grow wiser

every day and we learn more every day how to live in the Spirit and not in the ways of the world. Specifically,

this means that every day we pray for divine

wisdom, humility, the gift of true repentance, and

above all love for all that God has made, and

especially for one another. The love that we had

before grows; everything that shines is polished;

everything is washed and cleaned .

This new year at St. Sophia, we will begin new

ministries and many projects. They are to benefit

our lives and the lives of others. We will be

working in two major areas: in evangelism and

outreach, ultimately establishing a new mission

congregation in San Antonio; and beautifying and

renewing our original St. Sophia buildings and

grounds as well as ministry and education

programs for all ages. All this will require effort on

all our parts, but it will be an exciting time and one

that we will all remember the rest of our lives.

Good strength to everyone for the new year! In

Christ’s love, +Fr Brendan

GOYANS and family members from throughout

the Metropolis. It is the largest gathering of any

kind in the Metropolis and offers an atmosphere of

Christian fellowship and friendly competition.

This year St. Sophia will have 18 GOYAns playing

basketball. With 15 adults, there will be 33 people

going.

We will provide pictures and more commentary

about our trip in February. Keep us in your

prayers for a safe trip to and from the tournament.

ADULT EDUCATION AT ST. SOPHIA

At St Sophia there will be several opportunities in

2017 for adults at every age to learn more about our

faith and practice:

Sundays following Divine Liturgy: In

January we will begin adult education in the

Founders’ Hall. Bring your coffee or refreshments

with you. These will be short classes by Father

Brendan, visiting speakers, and knowledgeable lay

members of the congregation, on a variety of topics.

If you have an idea of something you would like to

study, please speak to Fr. Brendan or to one of the

parish council members. Some topics that are on

the agenda for coming weeks: An introduction to

Liturgy in the Orthodox Church; the influence

of Orthodoxy on Celtic (Irish and Scottish)

monasticism and worship; Jewish origins of

Orthodox Christian worship; the origins of the

Liturgy as we have it today; Orthodox mission

around he world; and more.

Tuesdays at 10 am: Bible study in the

administration building. Topics change through the

year. Bring an Orthodox Study Bible or the Greek

text.

Thursdays at 7 pm: Spiritual Awakenings

discussion group. We read various books that have

been important in Orthodox tradition, about

Christian spiritual life and prayer. In recent months

the group has discussed sayings of the Desert

Fathers and Mothers, Wisdom from Mount Athos

(writings of St. Silouan of Athos), and (currently)

‘The Way of A Pilgrim’ (an anonymous Russian

journal from the 19th century, about the Jesus

Prayer).

Movie Mondays: On the first Monday of the

month at 7 pm, a film that illustrates aspects of our

Christian faith or of Orthodox tradition. During

Lent, the film will be shown after Compline:

Compline at 6 pm, film at 7 pm. Bring popcorn,

snacks or fasting food when appropriate!

Orthodox Christian faith and practice is a way of

life, and is very profound. No one learns everything

there is to know about life in Jesus Christ; this is a

process of growing in knowledge of the teachings

and traditions of the Church, of the Holy Scriptures,

and in prayer.

Christian education programs often focus on

teaching children the fundamentals of Christian

faith, and later, how to live as Christian adults in a

secular world. However, it is equally important for

adults to continue to learn. Many of us grew up

without hearing explanations of basic elements of

our faith, ways of worship, and traditions. Do we

know how to explain Orthodoxy to our friends? Do

we know why our Liturgy looks the way it does?

Are we acquainted with the main outlines of Church

history? How our traditions are different from, or

similar to, Catholic and Protestant traditions? Learn

all this and more by taking part in one or more of

these opportunities in the new year.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you, our St. Sophia brothers and sisters, and to all of the faithful in

Christ! We pray that 2017 will be a fruitful year and that our Lord and Savior will guide our parish

towards prosperity!

Please join us for Divine Liturgy on January 8th when Father Brendan and I will deliver a special message

regarding our stewardship mission in 2017.

Stewardship packets will be available for pickup following Liturgy in Mangos Hall. All remaining packets will

be mailed on January 9th.

I look forward to worshipping alongside you in 2017, and, together, offering ourselves to God as He offered

Himself to us.

Roger Sanftner St. Sophia Stewardship Chairman

STEWARDSHIP 2017

Thank you to all who brought food, came early or stayed late to help prepare, serve and clean up after the Ma-

karia for the family of Father Mangos.

Father John served St Sophia generously and was loved and respected by all. May his memory be eternal.

Your generosity and love was and is much appreciated by Philoptochos, as well as by the family, who also

expressed their thanks and appreciation for such a lovely meal. Even though many of you are not pictured, we

know you were there and you are appreciated.

In the words of "Tiny Tim" God bless you everyone.

Happy New Year!Happy New Year!Happy New Year!Happy New Year!

As we welcome in 2017, it seems an appropriate time to brag a little about all of the wonderful things our

Hecabe Chapter #185 has accomplished this past year. We’ve supported numerous charitable organizations

with over $4,000 in support. Some organizations that we were able to help included the San Antonio Food

Bank, Philoptochos fundraiser for St. Basil’s home, the Jonathan Dolan Scholarship Fund, AHEPA, Daughters

of Penelope Salute to Women, St. Nicholas rebuilding, the upcoming Texas 4,000 which is a 4,000 mile bike

riding event to raise funds for cancer research, the national chapter of the Maids of Athena, and a combined

total of $3,575 to our beloved St. Sophia for stewardship, building maintenance for the roof repairs, various

memorial donations for departed sisters and most recently a $1,000 to our Mission Church.

In addition, we awarded two $1,000 scholarships through our Mary Vamvoras Scholarship Fund.

All of these donations were made possible due to the continue dedication and hard work of our sisters, but also

to you, the community who helps support our rummage sale each year and events such as our Market Day

event. A huge thank you!!!

Our next regularly scheduled meeting is January 9, in the double classroom at 7:00 pm. We try to wrap up

business within an hour, play some fun game – yes with prizes – and then join our AHEPAN brothers for a

meal.

At present, our board and the Philoptochos board, of whom many of us are members of both, are in discussion

of co-hosting the Philoptochos Senior Valentine Bingo event in February. So, please keep an eye out for this

exciting venture!

As always, please call me at 210-381-8135 if you have any questions or just want to know more about us.

In closing, I would like to wish each of you a very Happy New Year full of joy and blessings!

Our SCS program is in full swing. On December 18, we had a wonderful Christmas program.

Sunday Church School took a 2-week break for the Christmas holiday, and will resume classes on January 8,

2017, when our SCS classes will remain upstairs for the Blessing of the Waters. Our GOYAns will be attend-

ing the Basketball Tournament in Dallas on Jan 13-16, 2017.

We are blessed by the commitment of our teachers, and by the wonderful effort of the parents to get their kids

to Liturgy and Sunday Church School each week. Thank you all!

Philoptochos November and the fir st par t of December has been a very busy time for Philoptochos! We want to thank

everyone who ordered Holiday Baked Goods. The Holiday Bake Sale is one of our Chapter’s major

fundraisers. All proceeds from our bake sale help to support local San Antonio Charities. We also want to

thank everyone who helped with the baking of koulourakia, baklava and kourabiethes. Thank you for such a

successful event!

Our December General Meeting was held on December 3rd at the Magnolia Haus. It was such a great start to

the Holiday Season. Thank you to Pam Layden and Elly Watkins for organizing this event. And a special

thank you to Trish Moy for a very informative presentation about Habitat for Humanity and giving us many

suggestions about how we can support this life changing organization. Did you know that Habitat for

Humanity in San Antonio was the first U.S. affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International? We are looking

forward to continuing to partner with this valuable organization.

Rolling, rolling, rolling! We made

over 3900 koulourakia in two days!! A

big thank you to everyone who helped!

Happy New Year! Can you believe it - - it is 2017! Hope everyone had a blessed Christmas and a wonderful

New Year.

We wrapped up our last meeting for 2016 with a great turn out of members. Maria LaRochelle once again

prepared dinner for us and everyone brought their favorite snack and drink to share with everyone. Our Booze

Basket Raffle was a big hit - - especially for Dean Danos, Dan Titerle and Peter Kaberides - - they shared all

the bottles! Hopefully they will share at our next meeting on Monday, January 9, 2017.

We were thrilled to have Tim Swainhart at the meeting. As a matter of fact because of Tim, we created the

“BAC” – Bald Ahepans Club – see photos below.

Since we did not have a FUNstival this year, we were not able to have our “Sponsor a Soldier” program for

the Fisher House and the Warrior Family Support Center. However, we did drop off some Baklava for the

warriors to enjoy over the holidays.

The Ahepans also wanted to recognize and thank our retired clergy; Dn. John Stehling, Fr. John Mangos, Fr.

to Danny Organ, Dean Danos and everyone else that helped to deliver them.

We are planning the AHEPA and DOP Holiday Dinner Party for some time in January. Keep an eye on your

As we start 2017, we want to thank everyone in advance for the outstanding support we get throughout the

Q: What is the Liturgy of St. Basil?

A: The Liturgy of St. Basil is the Divine Liturgy as it was celebrated by St. Basil the Great, who was

made Archbishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia in 370. St. Basil was very well educated and was a close friend

of St. Gregory the Theologian. He spent many years in monastic retreat and asceticism, writing the “Rule of

Basil” for monastic life at the request of fellow monks. He probably composed his Liturgy while serving un-

der Bishop Eusebius in Caesarea.

Today the Liturgy of St. Basil is celebrated in Greek Orthodox churches only on a few occasions in the Church

year: On the Feast of St. Basil (January 1, the Feast of the Circumcision); on the five Sundays of Great Lent

(not counting Palm Sunday); on Holy Thursday and Holy Saturday; and the eves of the Feasts of Nativity

(Christmas) and Theophany (January 6).

In most years, on the eves of Nativity and Theophany the Liturgy of St Basil is combined with Great Vespers,

and is celebrated as the Vesperal Liturgy of St. Basil. Following the Entrance of the Gospel Book (at the time

of the second censing in the Vespers), the service continues as on an ordinary Sunday, with the homily fol-

lowed by the celebration of the Eucharist. On some years, however, Nativity of Theophany fall on a Sunday

or a Monday. In those years (as in 2016/2017) the Liturgy of St. Basil is celebrated on the day of the Feast.

The Liturgy of St. Basil is virtually identical to the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, except for some of the

prayers which are recited by the priest or bishop in front of the Holy Table. The prayers as recited by St. Basil

are longer than those of St. John Chrysostom, so that if the congregation cannot hear the prayers, it appears

that the priest is standing for a long time in front of the altar without doing anything. In reality, these are very

beautiful prayers that recount the whole history of salvation, from Adam to Christ, which we have in the resur-

rection of Jesus Christ.

Both liturgies date from the fourth century. Before that time, bishops prayed spontaneously at the Holy Table.

The manner of prayer of Sts. Basil and John Chrysostom was so admired that these prayers became fixed,

and are now standard in our celebration of the Lord’s Supper. When the Liturgy of St. Basil is being celebrat-

ed, listen carefully to hear what the priest is saying in the eucharistic (communion) prayers. If you have a com-

puter, look up the prayers so that you know how St. Basil understood salvation. Then, if anyone asks about our

faith, it is helpful to relate exactly what St. Basil prayed about in his divine liturgy!
