Christ the King—St. Anthony Parish Burlington January 26, 2020

My dear family in Christ, This is a big week for some of the younger members of our parish family. The second grade students in our school and in our religious education program will be celebrating their First Reconciliation. This is a necessary step as they prepare to receive their First Holy Communion on May 2nd. Some of us may have memories of our own First Reconciliation (or First Confession), and I pray the memories are peaceful and joyful ones. Far too often the Sacrament of Reconciliation is portrayed by people in very negative terms, and this can cause children to be apprehensive and nervous about celebrating the Sacrament. Or adults reflect upon a particular Confession that was difficult or a priest confessor who was not very kind and swear off ever going to Confession again. I want us all to resist the temptation to make going to Confession a negative thing, because it is about an encounter with the merciful Jesus who died for us. The Gospel this weekend presents us with some of the very first words Jesus proclaimed in His public ministry, and what does He say? “Repent.” He understood that His ministry was to call sinners to repentance. This is a wonderful thing to consider. How many of the stories in the Gospels are about Jesus encountering someone who was suffering and He extended mercy to them? How many sinners came to Him and were forgiven? Jesus never rejected anyone who came to Him seeking comfort. He wanted to heal the brokenhearted and to reconcile sinners 2000 years ago, and He wants to do the same today in our parish. That mercy and divine love is what our children will be experiencing this week, and I cannot stress enough how all of us need the same gift of God’s forgiveness in our lives. Whether for grave sins or venial sins, whether it has been one week, one year, or twenty years since our last Confession, Jesus is waiting for us to experience His love and forgiveness. Why wouldn’t we want to know the peace that He alone can give us, not just once in our lives, but mercy without limit? So as we consider the call to “Repent,” let’s pray for our students coming to know God’s mercy in Christ, and let’s pray that all of us return to Him to know that same mercy and peace in our lives. Confession is not meant to burden us but to free us. Let’s not stay away from Him. In Christ, Msgr. John J. McDermott, VG
