FCCLA Enters Regional Competition Feb. 17-19 Mrs. Vandiver announced that the local chapter of FCCLA has several members entering competition in this year’s regional meeting
in Waco. Students and their projects are highlighted following: Ester Marquez, this year’s FCCLA president, saw several projects
that really interested her at last year’s regional competition. “Last year I saw a girl who
made a really pretty dress out of a tablecloth. That inspired me. I have always had really
good ideas, but I have just never really put them on paper, but I thought, ‘If she can do
that, I can too.’” Her event category is Recycle/Redesign in which she must design her
own new product out of a recycled material. Ester started out thinking about re-designing
her high heels by adding splashes of color or fabric to them. She also had the idea of
making men’s shirts into tank-top dresses, but she finally decided to go with a recycled t-
shirt idea. “I got an old t-shirt and re-designed it into a stylish workout top. I have seen
the technique used in clothing at a Mexican Bazaar in the Dallas area. Then I found that
kind of braiding style on the internet. This technique requires Ester to make cuts into the t
-shirt on a diagonal line that extends from the neck and winds around to the back and
bottom of the t-shirt. These newly-created loops are then “chain-stitched” together and
are finally tied off at the bottom.”I put my twist on it by using the off-the-shoulder style
of the 1980’s because of a recent resurgence of 80’s style clothing and by using t-shirt
material. The result is a workout suit top. Ester finished it off with elasticizing the top
and adding beads, bangles, or bling to the remaining sleeve. “I like this idea because the
shirts I saw at the bazaar in Dallas cost around $25, but I can make my own even better
creation for only the cost of elastic because I am recycling something that we all have
plenty of – old t-shirts,” Ester says. Her project requires her to provide accessories to go
with her clothing item, to provide pictures and sketches of her designs as well as the final
product itself, and a poster showing the planning process. She must give an informative
speech on the design and planning processes. Ester has consulted with fellow student
Deseray Greer during the process as she has bounced ideas off of her. She says , “Mrs. V
has been very supportive on any ideas I have and has tried her best to help me in any way possible with all my crazy ideas.” Ester
said that she has even had people requesting that she make shirts of this new design for them – and they will pay for them.
Jackson Dailey and Dustin Lawson placed 2nd at regionals last year and 3rd in the state with their applied technology project. They
will once again collaborate in the same category with a new project. This year’s project is called “Reading with the Beat, the Techno
Beat.” This project will encourage child develop-
ment skills, as well as public speaking skills. The
technology devices being used include a camera.
Elmo device which allows the computer screen to
be projected onto the wall, a sewing machine, a
computer, speakers, MP3 music, and use of a web-
site. All of this was organized and came together
under Jackson and Dustin in the annual Read across
the Bluff sponsored by FCCLA. Read across the
Bluff creates themed rooms where FCCLA students
share books with primary grade students to foster a
love of reading. This year’s rooms incorporated
themed music, as well. Jackson and Dustin say,
“Technology is growing faster and faster in the
world, and if we introduce it at a young age, then
the very young will know how to handle it.”

FCCLA, continued from page 6
Katelyn McDonald, freshman, is running for regional office for FCCLA.
Katelyn said that one of her major responsibilities as a regional officer will
be helping to plan and hold a regional meeting. Katelyn has been able to
gain approval from Superintendent Ross and was given a recommendation
from Principal Cummings. With these she submitted an application. She
looks forward to giving a speech during the regional meeting and going
through an interview process all about FCCLA. Katelyn says this will give
her the opportunity to learn how to work with total strangers in making
decisions and plans and how to encourage teamwork.
Ryan Watts and Kaci Powers will compete in the Illustrated Talk event.
Their topic is “Child Abuse, the Hidden Epidemic.” The contest requires
speaking on a topic which is a concern in society. The speech must be pre-
sented
to three
groups
prior to
the ac-
tual
contest.
They
must
complete research for information used, develop visuals for the
presentation and complete a portfolio for the judges. Their speech
is judged not only for information presented, but also how effec-
tively it is done through public speaking skills.
Stephanie Hogue, Amanda Fowler, Josh Cannon, Bruce Mar-
rero, Casey Gore, Halie Waid, and Sarah Williams make up
this year’s FCCLA Parliamentary Procedure team that will be
competing at regionals. During this contest, a mock meeting is
held. The requirements of the meeting are not known until the
contest begins. Then the team goes through the meeting making
sure to hit upon all of the required points and adhering to the
rules of order. Members say that this contest allows them to
use teamwork and more than anything to “think on their feet.”
They must learn to speak up, memorize things, and control
their nerves as they speak in front of others in a clear voice.
They feel these skills can transcend to when they come into
the job market and must interview and deal with others on the
job as well as working in a team setting. Team member
Amanda Fowler says, “I used to be a little shy, and I was terri-
fied of speaking in front of other people, but this competition
has helped me to overcome that.” Pictured are front L-R
