A Few Words from the President Dear SST Members, I hope all have enjoyed such a gentle

winter… and now Spring is here… where does the time go? We certainly can’t com-plain about this lovely weather!

Sadly, I am sure you are aware by now that we lost one of our founding members, Jackie Wareham. She was truly a woman of great enthusiasm and passion for her Scottish heritage. The SST owes her so much. Our heartfelt condolences to her daughter Rosemary. Jackie will be missed, indeed.

We’ve had some great presentations so far in 2012. From antique Scottish swords to “Battle of the Scots” to Scotland Rising we’ve covered a great deal of Scottish history – thanks to all our presenters!

Many of you came out recently for the Norfolk St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Didn’t Nessie look fabulous! Thanks to Stacy Apelt, Nessie is good as new and back to breathing fire!

April is Scottish / American History Month and on Apr 14 we will have our biggest event of the year- our annual Tartan Day Ceilidh. Come celebrate our Scottish culture with family and friends. The festivities start off at 6:30 PM. We’ll have our traditional dinner, plenty of music, dancing, and door prizes. For tickets contact myself, Donna (729-5154) or Kathryn Pe-terson-Lambert (463-0457). I hope to see you all there!

We will announce our Baird Scholarships that evening and have extended the deadline for submission until April 4. The Scholarships are available for anyone who is studying some-thing related to Scottish history or culture to include music, dance, academics. So think about it if you are doing some-thing related to Scotland or know someone who is. We want to support and promote this endeavor.

In May we are having our annual elections. If you desire to get more involved in the SST, please consider one of our board positions. All the Officer positions will be open and there will be three openings on the Board of Directors. Serv-ing in a leadership position of the SST is rewarding and worthwhile opportunity and I encourage anyone who is inter-ested to contact our Elections Chair, Manny Willis, and get your name on the ballot.

It has been an honor serving as your President for the last two years and although I will be in this position for a bit longer, I want to take the opportunity to thank you all for your support and friendship. I look forward to continuing to see you at our meetings and events!

Slainte Mhath, John McGlynn

Lots of music and revelry at John McGlynn’s Olde Towne-Portsmouth home following

the Scottish Walk.

The Scottish Society was well represented.

The signing of Amazing Grace at the conclusion of the Scottish Walk is always stirring and meaningful, and a

great way to start off the new year.

This and That Brenda Phillips came through her hip re-

placement surgery fit as a fiddle. She’s nearly back to normal, and is pain free.

That’s wonderful news! Manny Willis is recovering from surgery as

well. I’m sure he’d appreciate a quick e-mail or phone call. Get well soon, Manny!

It’s time for a new knee for Marcey Hunter, your’s truly. I’ll be out of work for three

months, so that will give me lots of time to catch up on reading and genealogy re-

search! Oh, and physical therapy, I guess. Tom & Lisa Chenowith are enjoying their

new home in Moyock, NC. The extra com-mute doesn’t stop Tom from helping us with quartermaster duties for our monthly meet-

ings. Thanks, Tom & Lisa!

At a recent party of Gaelic students at Skip & Marcey Hunter’s house, their Alaskan Malamute, Finn, fell in love with Samantha Campbell, daughter of Chris Campbell, a

Gaelic student and SST member, and his wife Jackie. Samantha was very generous with the Scooby snacks!

Alexander Ruairidh Montague Dunphy, or Roary for short, was born on Jan 11th to his proud parents, Ca-

triona and Brad Dunphy. What a lovely and braw wee lad!

Edward Brash, left, and John McGlynn didn’t let a little rain spoil their jolly good time at the Shamrockfest in DC. Their band, Glasgow Kiss, played to a large and enthusi-

astic crowd. You boys are really getting on the map!
