Denise Lane, a serial entrepreneur and business woman, started the Hill Diner in Los Alamos, NM twenty-seven years ago has been recognized as 2012 Suc-cess Client by the UNM-LA Small Busi-ness Development Center (SBDC). The business has grown to become part of the fabric of Los Alamos, both as an eating and meeting spot and as the first experience in the working world for the more than 400 high schoolers. The Hill Diner is where people go when they are craving comfort food in a family-friendly environment.

In the midst of the tough 2012 econ-omy, Denise expanded to establish a new restaurant, Dixie Girl. The menu is “New American” and patrons experi-ence new and different menu offerings derived from a mixture of cultures and cuisines. “Our concept emphasizes high quality, fresh ingredients in com-fortable surroundings. I take a handful

of cash to the Farmers’ Market each week and pick up fresh ingredients from area farmers … we have a suppli-er relationship with a farm in the valley that keeps us stocked with fresh pro-duce,” says Denise. Whether a celebra-tory meal or communing with friends over food, this is a great neighborhood restaurant.

Denise has self-financed the start-up of Dixie Girl. One of the innovative ways she raised capital was to create a “Founders Club” where members pre-purchased credits that can be used for purchases at the restaurant. Denise stated, “in addition to helping me with capital formation, the founders are also valuable resources for feedback and for making connections with other people in the community.”

The SBDC has helped Denise pursue her dreams over the years. “Our re-lationship with the SBDC goes way back,” says Denise, “We have sought and received assistance on a variety of business issues over the years. Dixie Girl was an idea that was five years in the making and the help and market data we received provided a clearer

understanding for the potential of this business and how we should adjust to market opportunities.”

In 2011, Denise participated in a Des-tination Retail initiative facilitated by the SBDC in partnership with the Los Alamos Chamber of Commerce. “That process turned on all kinds of light bulbs for me … and they are still turn-ing on to this day,” Denise said “I would have to say that the experience was life changing in terms of how I now think about positioning my businesses.”

Denise’s businesses also take advan-tage of the business training offered by the SBDC. According to Denise “The training offerings are a valuable part of the help the SBDC has provided to my businesses. They give me a convenient and affordable way to give my staff professional development in a variety of important topics. They get together in trainings and are more plugged in as a result.”

Denise is already in the process of ex-panding the Dixie Girl concept with a co-located, synergistic business called Dixie Girl Market. Dixie Girl created

25 new jobs in 2012 with another 10 new jobs planned when the market opens. The Hill Diner employs 45 peo-ple. Denise was recognized by the New Mexico Restaurant Association as the 2008 New Mexico Restaurateur of the Year. She is also a leading real estate professional in the community.

The Chamber of Commerce, Los Ala-mos MainStreet, and the Los Alamos Small Business Development Center collaborated in presenting a November workshop on Free Money Opportuni-ties in Los Alamos. There were multiple presenters discussing the MainStreet Curb Appeal Grant, MainStreet Small Promotions Grant, Tourism Coopera-tive Advertising, Los Alamos County Small LEDA Project Grants, Los Ala-mos County Façade Improvement Grants, Lodgers Tax Advisory Board Small Promotions Grant, and Pop-Up

Retail Opportunities. Current and as-piring business owners attended to learn if any were a fit for their business. Several have already engaged with a Business Advisor for assistance in pur-suing one or more of the opportunities. For more information on the programs read the Free Money Fair article in the November/December Issue of Mind Your Business at www.readmyb.com. To discuss how any of these programs can help your business or organization, call (505) 661-4803 to book an ap-pointment with a Business Advisor.

Fantastic Feedback From FAN 44I wanted to be sure to tell you how much I enjoyed today’s lunch with fellow Fan44ers at Coffee Booth... We never seemed to lack for con-versation, and I felt it was especially important for [newcomers] to be part of a growing circle of friends.

Since I am representing a service organization, I felt it was very valuable to have the opportunity to speak one-on-one about Rotary. For many, the volunteer work of Rotary, Kiwanis, Elks, the Masons... is very confusing. I appreciated the chance to tell the Rotary story and encourage collaboration or partnership with the new friends at the table. Thank you for offering this innovative program... This is really a valuable networking opportunity... I look forward to future FAN44 opportunities!

-GEORGIA S.

My wife and I really enjoyed the lunch time together. I know Linda always enjoys talking “politics” and I look forward to having someone else to talk about “guy” things. It was great to learn more about our community and the people who live here... Thanks to Kevin and Katy for organizing FAN44.

-MYRON K.

It’s always tricky to insert a new habit or practice within the confines of a busy workday, but the FAN 44 Lunch is well worth the effort. I really enjoyed dining today with my cohorts Bill Godwin and Linda Hull. We chose to discuss a realm of lofty topics which were so far removed from the pragmatics of work that it felt like a mini-vacation away from the desk; with only one hour expended. It was a really enjoyable and uplifting use of time.

Remember the old poster showing Uncle Sam? The one that says “Uncle Sam Wants You?” Well, think of me as Uncle Sam. I am asking you, not to join the Army, but to get more involved in the Chamber. That’s going to mean a lot of differ-ent things to lots of different people- it may mean helping to plan the golf tournament, or serving on the Youth Business Grant committee, or calling me to ask for some help with a press release, or volunteering to host a FAN Club.

When was the last time your organization hosted a FAN Club? Have you gotten to know any fellow businesspeople at the FAN 4 4 luncheons? Chamberfest is the second weekend in June- if you’ve never participated before, you might start thinking about how to introduce the community to what you do. Do you have a special offer we can promote for you? Do you know what’s showing up on your Traffic Catcher page when people search for you on the internet?

I’d like to know if your business is changing or growing. I’d like to know if you’ve got a meeting I can help facilitate. I’d like to know if you’ve got an interesting story to tell about a customer or an experience you’ve had in business.

Call me to tell me what the Chamber can do for you. I’d love to hear from you. [email protected], 661-4816

We have just begun a brand new year of Community Matters, the program of the Chamber of Commerce that is de-signed to strengthen the ties between chamber members and the communi-ty. We have had 39 members sign up – their participation enables us to carry out projects ranging from the produc-tion of The Essence of Los Alamos and White Rock to our support for the As-sets in Action program.

We thank all of the participants by giv-ing them advertising space in the Es-sence. What we hear from both the participants and the public is that they

really enjoy the publication, because it tells the story of the many ways we are connected to one another – through charitable giving, non-profit organiza-tions and service clubs, recreational activities like skiing and skating, and local businesses, where we meet our neighbors and friends.

If you are interested in joining us, it’s not too late - just call Katy Korkos at 661-4816 to get signed up today.

The first meeting of the Creative District Advisory Com-mittee was held on Monday, December 10th. The meeting started off with introductions of committee members, terms were established on a one year or two year term, followed by a brief synopsis of the Creative District (first beginnings to current status.) Members include: Nancy Bartlit, Linda Deck, Marlane Hamilton, Jane Lin, Carolyn Mangeng, Tay-lor Martinez, Heather McClenahan, Ken Nebel, Peggy Pend-ergast, Bill Sellers, Holger Waschinski and Ron Wilkins.

Expectations of committee members were expressed for the direction of the Creative District Advisory Committee and what success might look like. Nancy Bartlit expressed imple-mentation of the first year financial plan. Ron Wilkins relat-ed that success would look like a vital downtown with lots of activity (things to see and do) with coordination between or-ganizations. He also stated that coordination was important with what the County is already doing in its scope of work and then move forward. Carolyn Mangeng stated that hiring a curator to do the work of coordination would show success.

Finally, a chair and co-chair were designated. Carolyn Mangeng will serve as Chair and Linda Deck as Co-Chair.

Assets In Action will highlight good deeds performed throughout the com-munity at its 4th annual Assets In Ac-tion Community Awards ceremony on January 5th, 2013.

The Community Asset Awards honor those unsung heroes, people who are not looking for praise or attention, but

just do good things for the community because they enjoy doing them. Those recognized in the past have made con-tributions locally, nationally and even internationally to improve the lives of people or their community.

Gene Schmidt, Superintendent of Los Alamos Public Schools has made nu-merous nominations. “Los Alamos is a very remarkable community with a deeply embedded, unselfish spirit of volunteerism. I marvel at the capacity of our residents to find ways to assist their neighbors. When I see these gifts so unselfishly given, I am reminded of the goodness in people who humbly, without thought of receiving thanks, go through their lives practicing random acts of kindness. In some small way, these acts of kindness need to be cel-ebrated. I take great pleasure in shin-ing a light on these incredible people as no good deed should go unnoticed. I would strongly encourage community members to join with me in looking for the good in people and celebrating it through a nomination for the Assets in Action Community Awards,” says Schmidt.

The ceremony to honor those nomi-nated will take place on January 5th. Tickets are just $10 and are available by calling Bernadette Lauritzen at 505-661-4846.

CONTINUED.... From this catchy descrip-tion you can make out that our volun-teer needs are diverse. We have certain volunteers who are needed for lining up floats in our WinterFest and Fair & Ro-deo weekend parades; we need strong, heavy-lifting helpers for transporting our stereo system out to event locations; judges to decide which floats are the most dazzling and should win first place, volunteers to answer the telephone while the visitor center receptionist is out to lunch, golf enthusiasts to plan our an-nual tournament to benefit United Way

of Northern New Mexico, people to help our small business center counselors with the youth business grant awards, or volunteers to go to the Legislative Re-ception in Santa Fe and sample some of the best food in the world. This is a short list of LACDC’s volunteer functions. If you would like to learn more about these opportunities, please call Cindy at 505-661-4815.
