Share your LOVE for Kiwanis! We are already enter our 5th month of the Kiwanis year and with it being Feb-ruary, let’s use this month to inspire others around us and share our LOVE for Kiwanis. Here are the top five suggestions for how you can show your Kiwanis love this month.

1. Encourage your friends to participate in your upcoming club project or visit one of your meetings. 2. Share or like the Kiwanis District Facebook page or our posts on your personal page. We are highlighting our amazing clubs so check in often. Use the hashtag #KidsNeedKiwanis and #TXOKKiwanis 3. Tell five people about your signature project. 4. Ask one Key Club senior to apply for a Kiwanis scholarship or if your club gives them locally ask any senior! Don’t know any? They are proba-bly sacking your groceries so try starting there. 5. On behalf of Kiwanis, thank someone who goes above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of other people (i.e. nurses, teachers, first-responders, etc.) You can even print out the mini card pictured below and give it to them.

and give it to them.

Governor Visits Thank you to the Kiwanis members who have greeted us so far from around the District at the Gov-ernor visits. At the time of this publication we have visited South Texas, Big Country and the Metroplex. There was a great turnout at all three visits! It sure is fun to hear from Kiwanians who are fired up about service. The Metroplex Regional Visit held at the YMCA Camp Carter in Fort Worth had Key Club and CKI members there as well as some of our younger Kiwanis members. Big Country was in Abilene and they are full of excitement for upcom-ing DCON. They had members come from within a 200 mile radius, several Key Clubbers and younger members as well. The Key Clubs also held their Lt. Governor elections with Governor John. South Texas met in San Antonio and kick-started the visits!

We’ve had excellent guest speakers presenting on the future of Ki-wanis at all three visits. Francine Eikner has given a compelling and heartfelt presentation on the Eliminate Project. I-LEAD, the profes-sional development/club leadership training has also been dis-cussed so far. If we haven’t visited your area yet, we look forward to meeting you soon.

Your Fellow Kiwanians,

Governor John & Governor-Elect Patrick

Francine Eikner gave a Project Eliminate presentation in Big County.

Governor-Elect Patrick Schribi and Governor John Sheri-dan presented a hilarious “A Kiwanis Theft” Skit.

In Loving Memory…. On April 25th of this year, while being an ac-tive President, Randall Estes passed away. He was dedicated to Kiwanis and the Children of this County, his main love with the Boys and Girls Club. On Nov 8th, during a ceremony with Randall’s family, and the Ki-wanis club present, we dedicated a Tree and a bench with a plaque in his memory and had it placed at the Boys and Girls Club. We are excited that his memory will live long in a spot that he enjoyed so much.

Mansfield Kiwanis Fa La La La 5K Shines in the Rain

Hearts dedicated to serving the children of Mansfield were not detered by the rain and cold weather on Saturday, December 3, 2016. Runners and volunteers braved the elements with smiles on their faces as the rain stopped and the FaLaLaLa 5K course cleared right before the start of the race at 9:00 AM.

Clear skies were certainly not promised when the Kiwanis Club of Mansfield members and vol-

unteers arrived at Katherine Rose Memorial Park earlier that morning to set up the race. The rain arrived with the Club members at 7:00 AM and continued until 8:45 AM. Even with the downpour the Club was able to successfully decorate the starting area and registration area with handmade Christmas yard art provided by Lonnie Barberee and set up an efficient race headquarters to hand-out race bibs and shirts to all participants. The entire 5K route is contained on Mansfield’s Walnut

Creek Linear Trail which is an all-weather trail that was not effected by the rain before the race. This year’s 5K was chip-timed by Chip-2-Chip Race Timing. Chip-2-Chip has timed the 5K for a

few years and once again did an outstanding job not only during the 5K but in the months leading up to the event with marketing and advertising on multiple race calendars.

This year’s division winners were:

Results for all runners may be viewed at www.falalala5k.com.

The Kiwanis Club of Mansfield would like to extend a special thank you to all runners and

volunteers from Saturday and the sponsors for the 5K: Methodist Mansfield Medical Center, Frost Bank, Steve Grammer Farmers Insurance Agency, The Seibert Law Firm, PC, The FIRE Real Estate Group, Minuteman Press-Mansfield, and Mansfield Parks & Rec Dept.

Funds raised by the Mansfield Kiwanis this year will go towards programs such as the Feed

the Kids for Summer Program, Key Clubs and scholarships for Mansfield seniors.

Edmond Kiwanis Club Holds Successful “Santa on a Fire Truck” Event

On December 10th

On December 10, 2016, the Edmond Kiwanis Club held its 6th “Santa on a Fire Truck” event. This event collects toys for foster children. A total of 300 toys were collected and given to Angels Foster Network OKC. The Edmond Kiwanis Club selected this non-profit organization to receive the toys. According to its website, "Angels’ goal is to … cultivate the best foster homes available for infants, toddlers, and children. Many of Angels’ foster children have lived in emergency shelters or a series of short-term foster homes after being abused, neglected or abandoned by their biological parents." Jennifer Abney, Founder/Executive Director of Angels Family, is an Edmond Kiwanis Club member who coordinated one of Santa’s stops where toys were collected. Thanks to the support of the City of Edmond Fire Department, Santa Claus—former Edmond Kiwanis Club member Boyd Mize—rode the city’s fire truck on his visits to four Edmond neighborhoods. Mrs. Claus--Edmond Kiwanis Club Member Kathy Ackerman—arrived ahead of Santa to announce the jolly elf’s arrival. Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time. The Edmond Kiwanis Club meets atNoon in the Cherokee Room of the Nigh University Center, University of Central Oklahoma, and 100 North University Drive. Programs fea-ture speakers on a wide range of topics.

Harker Heights TX Kiwanis Club The Harker Heights TX Kiwanis Club has had a very busy Fall. A local Veteran's or-ganization visited their meeting to recognize all the Vietnam veterans and spouses of deceased veterans during the 50th anniversary of the start of the war . Pat Christ, Eli-jah King and John Footman brought certificates, pins and other items to recognized, honor and thank our Kiwanis members for their service in the Vietnam war. Many of the activities this Fall included our Eastern Hills Middle School Builders Club and Harker Heights High School Key Club members. The club is a life time member of the Friends of the Harker Heights Public Library and volunteer at their children's pro-gram such as Batman Day, the children's Halloween Party and the Polar Express. We also volunteer for the city Halloween Hoopla by helping fill 1800 candy bags to be handed out to community children on Halloween night. The club shows community support by participating in the Killeen Veteran's Day Parade and the Christmas Pa-rade. We handed out coupons for a FREE book from the Friends of the Harker Heights Library to children at the Christmas Parade to promote reading. The HHHS Key Club assisted in delivering Christmas baskets at the local nursing home. Our Flag program is one of our major fundraiser and members place over 300 flags at homes and businesses on 6 major holidays. Preparations have also begun for our annual pan-cake supper to be held in February 2017 at the local elementary school.

ELIMINATE AUCTION IN ABILENE

Has your club reached your Elimi-nate pledge yet? It’s time to start

thinking about what you are going to bring to Abilene for the T-O District convention for Eliminate. At this writing, we are just over sixty-six mil-lion in cash worldwide, so even if your club has met your model club pledge, you can still help others who have not met theirs.

This year, Joyce Curry of the Mine-ola Kiwanis is again chairing the si-lent auction and Becky Spargo of the Abilene Kiwanis will be co-chairing this event. Try to get your item(s) do-nated and choose things that are popular for both men and women. It is al-so important that your item arrives before Saturday as the auction will close at noon. One suggestion is to let your Lt. Governor or Trustee bring it as they always arrive earlier. In our next issue, we will give you an ad-dress if you wish to mail your item.

In the picture is a hand beaded necklace from the Austin NW Kiwanis Club that will be in this year’s auction. Email Joyce Curry at [email protected] with a description of your item so that we can get the bid sheets done before convention starts. Again, your club will receive credit for the price at which your item sells for and we will do the paper-work to Kiwanis International for you.

National Pancake Day public relations assets for Kiwanis districts and clubs

Put purpose behind pancakes on IHOP® National Pancake Day

Kiwanis partner IHOP® Restaurants will host IHOP National Pancake Day on March 7 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with some locations offering free Buttermilk short stacks until 10 p.m. Kiwanis club mem-bers are encouraged to volunteer to put purpose behind pancakes and help raise money for Chil-dren’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

“Every year, we ask our Kiwanis club members to support our partners – IHOP and CMN hospitals – on IHOP National Pancake Day,” said 2016-17 Kiwanis International President Jane Erickson. “IHOP serves free pancakes and seeks donations to support the work at CMN hospitals and other

local charities. We ask our Kiwanis club members to tell the CMNH story and accept donations for the hospitals.”

Erickson said volunteers can sign up for a two hour shift at their local IHOP and know that they are helping kids. Kids like Zion can receive cutting edge treatment that will alter their lives, all because of support from communities across North America. Funds raised in cities with CMN hospitals stay in those cities to help kids in those communities. Even if your city is not home to CMN hospital, donations stay in your city or town to help local chil-dren’s charities. And the volunteer opportunity is an opportunity to help kids everywhere get the care they need.

Talking Points for Kiwanis club Pancake Day volunteers

You can help IHOP diners understand how their donation supports kids. Here are some suggested phrases to use:

Thanks for coming to IHOP today. I’m (name) with the Kiwanis Club of (name) and we’re helping IHOP

raise money for Children’s Miracle Network hospitals. Please consider a donation to help; our hospital

in (city/town) is a CMN hospital and local donations stay here to help sick kids in our community. Hi I’m (name) with the Kiwanis Club of (name). We’re at IHOP today helping raise money for Children’s

Miracle Network Hospitals. Even though we don’t have a CMN hospital here in (city/town), your do-

nation supports other local charities, such as Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Shriners Hospital

for Children.

Tips for volunteers

Smile. You’ll get a better reception. Get personal. If you know a child who has been helped by a Children’s Miracle Network Hospi-

tal, share a bit of their story. Keep it brief. They may be hungry and no one likes cold pancakes! Show your gratitude. Thank them for any donation they give.

Edmond Kiwanis Club BUGs Program

On Friday, January 20th, members of the Edmond Kiwanis Club visited Sunset Elementary. Dur-ing an assembly in the gym, club members handed

certificates, pencils and candy to those 3rd grade students who had brought up their grades. The BUGs (Bringing Up Grades) program is one

of the programs sponsored by the Kiwanis club, which also includes 3rd grade students at Ida Free-man, Orvis Risner and Will Rogers.

In addition, the club coordinates K-Closets in each of these four elementary schools to provide snacks and clothes to students.

The Kiwanis club receives community support from the Downtown Edmond Business Association, Homeland, Wal-Mart, and Sam's Club.

to make sure the K-Closets are properly stocked. Third grade students from teacher Debbie Jones' (woman with glasses) class proudly hold their certificates

with Edmond Kiwanis Club members (left to right) Al Warren (front), (back row) Bob Edwards, Manisha Patel, Kathleen Duncan, Jerry Bohannon, Bruce Ackerman,

Bill Austin, Robert Looman, and Orean Lee Peters joining them. Club Vice President Looman start-ed this year to coordinate the BUGs program. He took over from Peters

As another six-week as-sembly was recently (Jan. 28) held at the Mineola, Texas Elementary School to honor students from third to fifth grades for improving their grades, the school paid tribute to the Mineola Kiwanis Club for its Bring Up Grades sponsorship. Ki-wanis members present to pass out honor certifi-cates figured the project was celebrating a decade of partnership with the school in the Bring Up Grades (BUG as an acronym). The school principal and teachers took the occasion to thank the Ki-wanians for their efforts.

BUG is a Kiwanis International program and the Mineola Schools and the local Kiwanis Club are one of many that rewards students for grade achievement. Elementary students who improve their grade levels from one six-week period to the next are honored with a certificate handed out by Ki-wanis members. At the latest ceremony, the club co-ordinator for BUG, Robin Averett, reported about 330 students improved their scores from the previous pe-riod. In addition to certificate recognition, the club also supplies prizes to be given out to students in a drawing. The more improved scores for any student gives them additional opportunity in the drawings.

Since its inception in the Mineola schools, Kiwanis member Robin has coordinated the program. She prepares all of the certificates, gets signatures from Kiwanis Club leaders, gathers the prizes, and general-ly organizes the BUG assemblies in cooperation with the school. Various club members join her in the presentations. The Mineola Club has also included the Alba Golden Elementary School in more recent years with the program.

Midwest City Kiwanis Club

The Midwest City Kiwanis Club was chartered in 1951 and began helping the com-munity shortly thereafter, including assisting children to be more involved in their schools and in public service. Kiwanis has helped children since the club's beginning.

During the last 6 year, Midwest City Kiwanis Club began developing a new project with elementary schools in Midwest City. Kiwanis International has published infor-mation that identified where the most help was needed was in the third grade so that is where we started the BUG'S Program. (Bring Up Grades). With help from local businesses, public officials, and friends of Kiwanis, the club buys bicycles from Mid-west City's Wal-Mart. The club buys 2 bikes( 1 boy and 1 girl) for the third grade class of each school participating in the project. After each spring semester passes, each child who has brought up his/her grade, gets his/her name put in a box for a drawing at the end of that school term.

The Kiwanis club began the progr-ma with 2 schools and now in-volves 13 schools. Two of these schools are in the Oklahoma City School District, but are now locat-ed in Midwest City as well as Crutcho Elementary.

The public is invited to participate in this program by contacting a Midwest City Kiwanis member or one of the Elementary Schools that is in the program. The public is in-vited to attend a weekly Thursday meeting at 11am at the Rose State in the Terrace Room.

Regional I-Lead Program Plans Expansion for 2017

The newly reorganized Leadership Development Committee announces this year’s regional educa-

tion & training events for club and division leaders. The Committee, building on the success of last year’s ILead program, is further broadening the opportunity for Kiwanis leadership education. Be-

sides specific sessions for incoming Lt. Governors, Club Presidents, and Club Secretaries, the pro-gram this year adds time for a Formula focused membership growth session entitled “Membership

Enhancement”.

Another new feature is a gathering for all attendees who are not in breakout sessions entitled “Kiwanis Connections.” It will be an opportunity for discussing a variety of topics concerning the

Kiwanis club experience. It is designed for club members who are not incoming officers. In short, the I-Lead program will emphasize, even greater this year, the invitation of any club member want-ing to hear and speakto all matters that connect them to Kiwanis.

Last year’s I-Lead program featured 10 regional programs or, one in each region for the first time. The Regional concept opened the door for attendance by additional club leaders. Previously the Club Leadership Education was for club President Elects only. Last year’s changes also reor-

ganized the Lt. Governors training, moving from a weekend long Lt. Governor - Elect only session to now receiving training and education alongside their own Regional club officers and Trustee. This resulted in an increase in attendance from the previous weekend LTG training. Last year also included the reintroduction of club secretary training, which was well attended and well received. These changes resulted in about three times the attendance from previous division Club Leader-ship Education.

This year will continue to encourage attendance by any member who might be interested in becom-ing a club or division officer. The Committee feels that offering the opportunity to sit on training for members considering an office strengthens a club’s succession planning, thereby strengthening

the club.

Led by the T-O District Leadership Development Coordinator, Sam Curry, the committee members include District Officers Governor John Sheridan, Governor-Elect Patrick Schibi, Immediate Past Governor Erby Eikner and two Trustees, Mark Crouch and John Clifford. The Committee meets monthly primarily focused on I-Lead planning, curriculum development and material preparation.

I-Lead brochure handouts have been developed and are being distributed at the Governor visits this year and more district wide promotion is planned. I-Lead events take place in your Region during the months of June, July or early August. Watch for additional information.

Chair Leadership Development Coordinator
