Come Home Prayer
Loving Father,
We pray for those who have been baptised
but no longer, or rarely, attend Church:
that they will understand and experience in
their hearts that Christ is the source of
unconditional love and reconciliation.
We pray for everyone who worships in our
parish community; that we may find the right
words and means to invite our absent
brothers and sisters to return to the
practise of their faith.
Amen
Prayer to Saint Michael
St Michael, the Archangel,
defend us in the day of
battle; be our safeguard against the
wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him,
we humbly pray and do you,
O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power
of God, cast into hell Satan and all the other
evil spirits who prowl through the world
seeking
the ruin of souls.
Amen
Gospel Reflection for the Second Sunday of
Ordinary Time
Something To Live Up To
Have you ever had to live up to
someone else‟s expectations? At
first it can feel daunting, but the
strange thing about great
expectations, is that very often
they have the power to transform us. Living up
to raised expectations can make us into better
people.
In today‟s gospel, Jesus meets Andrew‟s brother
Simon. He looks at him and says, “You are
Simon son of John; you are to be called Cephas,
meaning Rock.” The new name must have filled
Peter‟s friends with astonishment. “A rock”
Peter certainly wasn‟t. Peter we know was a bit
of a hot head. He was impulsive, rash,
sometimes misguided and often passionate. To
describe him as a „rock‟ was surely
inappropriate. Yet slowly and surely, Peter starts
to live up to Jesus‟ expectations, and slowly but
surely, Peter changes from a hot headed
fisherman, into a steadfast leader of the Church.
As we see so often in the Bible, Jesus‟
expectations have the power to transform.
By comparison, we seem to live our lives with
fairly banal expectations. Our greatest ambition,
as we wake each morning might be to pay off a
mortgage or gain a promotion. Are we missing
something? Is God calling us to greater things
and we simply aren‟t listening?
For each of us God has a job to do. Of each of
us God has great expectations. How do we hear
God‟s calling? Do we listen to the world and the
people around us? How do we respond to our
calling? What are God‟s expectations of us?
How must we change?
Peace Sunday 14th January 2018
Extract from Pope Francis’ World Peace Day
Message 2018
Migrants and refugees: men and
women in search of peace.
The wisdom of faith fosters a
contemplative gaze that recognizes
that all of us “belong to one family,
migrants and the local populations that welcome
them, and all have the same right to enjoy the
goods of the earth.”
When we turn that gaze to migrants and
refugees, we discover that they do not arrive
empty handed. They bring their courage, skills,
energy and aspirations, as well as the treasures
of their own cultures; and in this way, they
enrich the lives of the nations that receive them.
We also come to see the creativity, tenacity and
spirit of sacrifice of the countless individuals,
families and communities around the world who
open their doors and hearts to migrants and
refugees, even where resources are scarce.
Pope Francis Prayer Intention of
January 2018
On the third day of his recent visit to Myanmar,
Pope Francis entered the Kaba Aye Centre, one
of the most important Buddhist temples in
Yangon, with his shoes off in accordance with
local customs.
There, he delivered a message: "For when we
speak with one voice in affirming the timeless
value of justice, peace and the fundamental
dignity of each human person, we offer a word
of hope." The pope also quoted Buddha himself,
advising, "Overcome the angry by non-anger;
overcome the wicked by goodness." This month
we are invited to join in Pope Francis‟ prayer
intention “…That Christians, and other
religious minorities in Asian countries, may
be able to practice their faith in full
freedom.”
Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
18th-25th January
Your Right Hand, O Lord, Glorious in Power
The Week of Prayer for
Christian Unity is traditionally
observed from the 18th to the
25th January – the octave of
St. Peter and St. Paul. Christian Unity is not
only Jesus‟ prayer for his disciples in the
Church, it is his plan for the completion of his
creation and the redemption of all humanity. So
the barriers between Christians stand in the way
of Christ‟s will. This week is an invitation to
involve ourselves in joint projects and
campaigns in order to realise God's ultimate
plan for us. JOURNEY OF FAITH
Monday 15th January 2018 at
7.30pm in the Club.
WHITE FLOWER APPEAL White Flower Appeal - the Society for the
Protection of Unborn children (SPUC) will
be holding its annual appeal this weekend.
SPUC is currently campaigning to stop the
decriminalisation of abortion, which means
taking abortion outside the law. This is the
most dangerous threat to unborn children
and their mothers in decades.
Please be as generous as you can to help us
defeat this latest attack on unborn babies
and their mothers, and to stop abortion
getting even worse in this country by
decriminalisation

CHRISTMAS PRESENTS
Many Thanks to all that responded to the
appeal for Christmas presents for families
in need. We had a fantastic response and
the SVP were able to help over 60 children
through the schools and also send lots of
presents to the residents at Plas Bellin Hall
- a Save the Family charity which helps
homeless families providing emergency
accommodation and support to families.
Hopefully this will be something we can
support again this year.
