A Word about InLineInkjet-to-Garment machines.An umber of competitors are offering machines that are called inli ne - because they have two print engines. They print the white f irst

Has the pr ocess been perfected?Commercially viable Inkjet printing directly to garments has been around since2004. Many potential customers have been on the fence waiting f or the tech-nology to be perfect. In the meantime those who are future thinkers or who sawthe market for quick turnaround times, no costly setup times, one-off imagesand short run full-color images bought into this process early. We have soldover 3,600 machines around the world since 2004 which shows how popularinkjetting directly t o garments is.

Have there been problems?Certainly. This is new te chnology and both manufacturers and customers hadto go through a learning curve. We all thought it would be easy in the begin-ning. Pusha button and print a shirt. But, this type of technology requires a fewminutes of daily maintenance and machine up-keep. It is not hard, but we failedto emphasize this in the beginning. And, the ink is pigmented so it can settleand clog the heads if the machines are not used on a pretty regular basis. Asimple shutdown procedure might be necessary if a machine i s not going to beused for a few days.

The happiest custom ers are thos e who pr int every day.Casual users who print on weekends find that they need to at least turn themachine on once a day for a quick head cleaning, or they needed to removethe ink cartridges when they were not going to use the machine for a few days.It has been a learning curve for everyone and a maturing of this emerging tech-nology. The sign industry went throught the same birthing process when it

started changing from hand painting and screen printing to inkjet printing. Weare following in their footsteps. Replacing an inexpensive print head and deal-ing with occasional head clogs is simply a price of doing business. It is no dif-ferent t han changing the tires on your car or checking the oil. It is a very smallprice for the payoff of creating stunning images on light and dark shirts withminimal setup times.

Another m atur ing area has been in o ur users expectatio ns.In screen printing the act of reburning a screen or ruining shirts is a way of life.We have been teaching the art and science of screen printing since 1979 andthere is no magic to some of the steps it takes to get a print to look correct. Forsome reason, certain customers who own inkjet-to-garment machines feelthere should be no ruined shirts and that every piece of artwork is ready toprint. We now work harder on this market segment to educate them about thegood, the bad and the ugly - before they make a purchase.

Is high production printing possibleand is the process perfected?

Do internet for ums speak for the industry?If you read internet forums you are going to see users who are happy andusers who are unhappy. These forums appear to be the voice of all users wthat is not the case. The vocal few get much more exposure than the silentmajority of happy users. We sell a LOT o f ink every day to t housands of vehappy users who love the process. We talk to happy users every day who bmore and more machines as t heir production needs increase.

Are the machines better?Although no process is e ver goin g to be perfect, we feel we have the bestmachine available with ourBlazer T-Jetprinters. They are robust and desigto run day-in and day-out. Yes, they do require some TLC just like all inkjetprinters. But, we have learned a lot over the the last three years. Our cus-tomers spoke and we listened to their needs. We learned that our users wotrade machine speed for reliability and they would pay more for an industriaquality device. We learned that our customers are not afraid to have more tone machine to give th em redundancy so they are never down or out of production. We learned that many of our customers print on nights and weekeso we extended our support hour s. We learned that training customers h elmake them a happy customer so we now offer T-Jet training classes four tiper month.

Inkjet textile inks need a long cure time.T-Jet printed shirts need to have the ink fully cured in order to m ake the printswashfast. FastINK is a pigmented textile ink that needs a long cure time.Unlike inks used in screen printing that can be brought up to high temperaturefor a quick cure, inkjet inks need a lot of time. The typical time to cure lightshirts is two to three minutes and for dark shirts three minutes at 330 degreesF or 160 degrees C. Most shops use a standard heat transfer pr ess to cure

shirts. While shirts are being printed on a machine, the previous shirt is beingcured. It is a simple process and it does not add to the printing time.

Will a scr een print dryer w ork?Screen printers typically have conveyor ovens for curing their prints. Smallovens have a tunnel/cure time of less t han 30 seconds. This is not longenough for textile inkjet inks. If you want to use a conveyor dryer for higherproduction, you need to be able to slow downt he belt so you get a threeminute tunnel time. This is almost impossible in small driers becauseyo u willburn up the shirt. A longer tunnel of 9 or 10 feet and hot air or hot air andinfrared heat will accomplish this.

Which way is best?A heat transfer press w ill help flatten the image and help the white ink appearbrighter. A conveyor dryer works better for h igh production. Create Film Positives on anInexpensive Inkjet Printer!

What is FastRIP?FastRIPis a PostScript interpreter called a raster image processor (RIP). WithoutPostScript it is impossible to print high-quality halftone dots on a non-PostScript inkjetprinter such as an EPSON 1400 or 4880. Even if your printer has PostScript, it may not beable to print halftone dots because PostScript is often just used to calibrate and balancecolors on an inkjet. The EPSON RIP does not print halftone dots! FastRIP does!

The magic of getting dense black images is not entirely inthe film. The rip is part of the magic!
