RICHARD HENRY President

Rochester Automobile Dealers' Assn., Inc.

Why An Auto Show?

An Auto Show provides the public with a relaxed convenient opportunity to see all makes and styles of automobiles side by side, and compare their various features.

Each make of car displayed on the Show floor is shown in as full a range of models as space permits and men fully versed in explaining the merits of the cars are here to serve you.

Perhaps the most noticeable trait of the men who exhibit the cars is their friendly attitude toward the public and towat·d one another. It is their firm conviction that the public can best be served by friendliness, so in this spirit, they agree on a principle of sincere and honest service to the people who attend the Show.

These capable men believe that knowledge of what makes an automobile go and what is built into the car to make it a vehicle of necessary strength, comfor t and endurance is of the utmost importance. They be· lieve that you, the public should know all this and they are here to enlighten you. Thus by your understanding of the "inner side" of an auto you gain knowledge which invites the care every automobile should receive to insure its long life, and at the same time it promotes a better understanding of safety which, in turn, insures your longer life.

The Auto Show can therefore be regarded as an I nstitute of Public Information and out of it comes a better appreciation of cars and their proper handling.

Further, the Auto Show gives you an opportunity to see the cut-away component parts of the cars in actual operation. These displays are seldom seen in the dealers' show rooms as they have been built by the manufacturers at enormous cost (as h igh as $50,000 for a single display) just to be presented at various shows. Our show is particularly fortunate in having been able to obtain an unusually large number of these interesting and instructive exhibits.

When looking at the cars, do not hesitate to ask questions regardless of how simple or complicated the questions may be. Learn the facts before you purchase and in this way obtain the car best suited to your needs and in a price range that best fits your budget. Do not be in doubt about any of the characteristics of the car you buy, but become familiar with its every feature.

'68 Dodge Charger

See all t he new '68 Dodges- Dar t, Coronet, Po lara, Monaco and Char ger - at the Dodge Exhibit. Five great ways to catch . . .

The automobile, .

crrca It arrived, of course, amid widespread con troversy;

work stoppages, price hikes, several new and not altogether popu lar or practical safety standards, and, for the first time, mandatory application of anti-smog exhaust controls .

Yet, despite all of these complications, the atmosphere was filled with optimism.

If these concensus projections, robust as they were, come true and 1968 does tu rn out to be a vintage year, it obviously will not be due to any of the factors that seemed to cloud its unveiling.

The final accounting wi ll be determined by the cash customers.

What are the sales attract ions for '68"?

They're cer tainly broader than 1967 when the domestic industry clearly defined its battlefield as the specialty car market.

This time the concentration has shifted to the intermediate field, which should prove to be a brisk trading area.

For one thing, it smacks a bit of the same excite. ment which has made the specialty car so popular ... not too big, yet not too small ... plus a youthful design !lair. And it's a bigger market, rising to 27 per cent of the total.

'68 Virtually every domestic manufacturer chose to

re-do its intermediate line. Naturally, the provocative long hood, short deck "look' ' prevaib.

One new nameplate was even C!:-tablbh,·d in the "'in-between category that separates compac:l , LJ dwindling breed, and standard size automobilt:~ . 1 i was Lincoln-Mercury division's Montego, which was created to compete favorab ly in size and market position with the GM intermediates and to overcome the "compact" identity of its Comet line.

Chrysler-Plymouth division chose this market classifica tion to ofl'er what it termed a "new concept " carthe low budget, high performance Road Runner, named after a TV cartoon character.

In a year that saw the domestic industry pare its numbers of models for the first time in nine years, the selection of intermediates was boosted from 122 to 124 in 1968, embracing the Chevrolet Chevelle, Dodge Coronet, Oldsmobile F-85. Ford Fairlane, Mercury Montego, Plymouth Belvedere, Rambler Rebel, Buick Special, and Pontiac Tempest. Overall, industry's model co"unt total of 1968 is 357, down from 370 in 1967.

After a thorough inspection of the intermediate line-up, it appears that the 1968 breed of "in-betwcenies" will pose some serious competition for the specialty "crowd."

And all along you thought you had to forsake Wide -Tracking when you moved up to a luxury car.

We have no idea how this misconception ever got off the ground. For. as you can observe below. Bonneville isn't just another fantastic Pontiac.

It begins with a long. lean body. poised on the biggest wheelbase we make-124 inches. Inside. you're greeted by the opulence of nylon-blend broadloom that extends door-to-door and then some. Generous swathes of simulated burl gramed Carpathian elm abound on doors and dash. And upholstery is no less fine: every -

thing from exquisite cloth and supple Morrokide. to aiiMorrokide. And if you're the kind who requires even more pampering. there's our Brougham Option. It includes extra touches of luxury like rich. cloth upholstery so stately you may not want to be seated.

Bonneville a luxury car? Definitely. Wide-Track? The Widest. So who says Wide-Tracking has to end when you're ready to move up. When your time comes. see your Pontiac dealer

TIPS FOR MOTORISTS

Growing Needs Make

a Second Car Pay It's Way

POINTERS ON

PICKING THE RIGHT ONE

If your wife "remembers" a club meeting on the morning you planned to drive to work ... if your oldest son a lways seems to have his hand out for the car keys ... if you get off the 5: 19 with no family hack in sight to carry you homeward ... if your car always seems to be full of garden supplies - brother, your brood needs more transportation!

The cost? Not too big a bite, when you eonsidet· the e."cellen t used cars available today. Or, if you're thinking of buying a new car, it might pay you to assign second-car duty to your old c.ar instead of trading it in.

Typically, an additional car l"•cnr · · a payin!! prorosition when these circum::-1.1.. . · ~:;c :

• A move from the city to the country, where family li fe is built upon connecting scattered points (home, school, shops, church, theater, friends), but public transportation is spotty. The homemaker suddenly f'inds herself in need of a car all day, every day.

• Change of job to one that requires driving to work, or driving as part of the job, by the bread-win· ncr. Now his W·ife realizes how much she needed the car on weekends.

• Maturing of teen-agers to driver age, when a car becomes a major social asset in their lives.

Sharing of one family car among two or more drivers will work a ll right as long as their needs don't conflict in time or place. It doesn't work at all when such conflicts pop up daily. Then the problem boils down to what kind of second car, and how much. Used car or new car?

How old shou ld your second car be? This should he governed by the amount of use you think it will gd. Tf you know your second car will be lightly ctriven, if your youngs ter is the prime mover in this ven ture. or if you want to try the second car idea for a few months, buy an older model that you can resell for close to its purchase price. long distances is expected a later model will pay off in terms of reliability and unused mileage.

When should you buy a new car and let the old car step down to the r-ole of "second"? First, look a t the condition of the car. If it's so well along in years and miles as to become a repair problem, better trade it in. Even in junior use, it will now deteriorate rapidly.

Look at your- equity in your present car. For example, assume you have completed more than twothirds of the payments on it. You have cash enough to buy a used car . Putting this cash into a down payment instead, you can probably acquire a n ew car with little or no increase in monthly payments.

Here are some suggestions :

Convertible. Fine for the young, or for a wife who likes to see and be seen as she runs her errands around town. If you now own a sedan or station wagon, the downright fun of an open car will be a welcome change. But the "soft top" is not so good for a to-andfrom-the-office car exposed to constant weathering all day. Think twice if you don't have a two-car garage to protect it. If you want one anyway, look for a used convertible with sound top, good paint.

Hardtop or Family Sedan. Usually excellent dollar values if bought used. Fine for smaller- families, commuters, businessmen. Your best bet if you don't need the special advantages of a station wagon or if you now own a convert ible. Hardtops h ave a distinct social advantage in their stylish appearance.

Station Wagon. Essential for the owner of a small retail or service business and for the familv with a seashore or resort summer place. Perfect, too; if vou're a do-it-yourselfer, gardener, sportsman, or head of a large clan.

Used wagons are generally priced higher than other styles of the same make and year, but they hold their investment very well. Excellent buy, for cargo space alone, if your "good" car is a convertible or highstyle hardtop.

Economy Six Sedan. For the same money, you can buy a "fleet" car (no equipment other than the heater) that's one or even two years newer than any other car type. Best bet for commuters or hard use. Six-cylinder engine is serviceable, easy on gas. If you want utility along with recent styling, th is is your best second-car b uy.

Blue and green were the most popular colors for cars 50 years ago, according to a 1909 survey. At the bottom of the list were black and white.

The best two-car garage in the country.

The best garages are filled with 1968 Buicks. Who could afford more than one? You most likely. Start with (left) the 112 inch wheelbase Buick Skylark-the handy-sized measure of Buick prestige at ordinary-car prices. Snuggle a new Buick Electra in next to it. And you' ll have a garage that's the envy of the neighborhood. The choice doesn't stop there, either. You can pick your pair from eight new Buick series for 1968. So we say: Wouldn't you r :ally rather have your Buick dealer fi ll your garage this year?

The '68 Buicks are talking your language.

R. A. D. A. Serves the Dealer and the Public

The automobile business has undergone a phenomenal growth during the past half century, and with its mushrooming expansion have come a number of complex problems.

Today the automobile business is not only big business but also a somewhat problematical business, if the proper relaqonship is to be maintained between dealer and customer.

One reason for the existence of such an organization as the Rochester Au tomobile Dealers Association is to improve constantly the standards of service to the motoring public and to clarify complicated issues, both on a local and national scale, as they develop.

The automobile dealers of Rochester are as highly competitive as any similar group anywhere, but, by getting together as members of the association and thrashing out their problems in an argumentat ive but friendly manner, they have succeeded in establishing an unwritten code of ethics that benefits both the public and themselves.

We believe that today, the fact that a dealer is a member of the RADA establishes him as an ethical operator in whom the buyer or prospective buyer can have confidence.

It also means that the advertising of member dealers, in whatever m edium, is factual and trust-

worthy. It means, too, that the se~;"vice jobs performed by

these dealers are dependable and that the work is done by skilled mechanics who really know their business.

All of these things have a two-fold aim: I ) to assure satisfaction to the buye•s of new or used cars, and (2) to promote greater safety for the motorist through expert car servicing.

From time to time, the Rochester Automobile Dealers' Association has bought advertisements in the local newspapers to explain complicated issues that have resulted from ch anges in government rulings regarding purchase and credit terms, p r ice ceilings, etc.

Although in actualitythe so called "family car" is an unbelievably complex piece of mechanism, the average Amerkan, with little or no mechanical knowledge, drives month after month, year after year, in safety thanks to the marvelous quality of the American product and, secondly, to thorough dependability of service by the dealer which keeps that car in good running order.

By constant vigilance, and exchange of ideas, and mutual agreement upon ethics, the emblem of the RADA has come to be accepted as a guarantee of expert dependable service, trustworthy sales practice and reliable advertising.

Cornering at high speeds is one of the last things to expect sm all cars to do, successfully. Unless it's a SAAB, the out-of-the-ordinary small car. Out of the ordinary because it has front-wheel drive. So it doesn't push you around like others do. It pulls you around corners, curves and other drivers' mistakes. Is that all SAAB has? Your car has five numbers on the speedometer. Volvo has six.

One could get the impression that the people who made your car lack a little confidence.

The Volvo speedometer (odometer in automotive talk) goesupto999,999 before it A ips back to 0. We dare say your car will never make it.

Of course, neither will a Volvo. But what a Volvo·can do is go beyond

a mere 99,999. Volvo, remember, is the car that lasts

an average of eleven years in Sweden. Eleven years, at say 10,000 miles a year works out to ll 0,000 miles.

Now we don't guarantee that a Volvo will last eleven years here in the States- or go 110,000 miles. But we do know that over95 % of all the Volvos registered here in the last eleven years are still on the road.

There are also Volvo dealers who have complained bitterly about people driving 100,000 miles on previous(5 digit) Volvos, letting the odometers Aip back to zero, driving another 30,000 or so miles and trying to peddle them as low·mileage cars.

So naturally, when we made the new

Volvo 144, the sixth digit on the odometer was inevitable.

But an odometer that tells you how far you can go isn't the only thing you'lllike about a Volvo.

There's also a gas gauge that te lls you how economically you're getting there. Volvo gets nearly 25 miles to a gallon, even with automatic transmission.

Basically, that's the difference between Volvos and other cars. r~~-=jifir=::!!:!!!II!J~~

Other cars goa little way and use a lot of gas.

Volvos go a long way and use a little gas.

Find another car under $2,000 \Vith all these advantages,

and we'll buy it for you.

35 miles per gallon And that's an honest 35. (A lot of people say they get more. )

Concave seats that recline for s leeping

You know how soft foam rubber is. Well, that's t he stuff we stuff our seats with. So if you sleep well a t home you'll sleep well in a Renault 10. You'll sit well, too. There are 18 adjustable seat positions. And 13Y2 inches of seat travel to make up for short or long legs.

Engine over the drive wheels In the winter you'll pass a lot of those big powerful cars. The rear drive wheels can really bear down on snow and ice because the entire engine is bearing down on them.

4 doors as s tandard equipment The two back doors make it easy to get to the back seat. Logical?

4-wheel independent s uspens ion Independent s uspension means each wheel can move up or down without moving the one on the other side. So when one wheel hits a bump, only one gets bumped. The other three keep the car and you going in a level position.

4-wheel disc brakes Because of this system's ability to withstand heavy braking without fade, ~;1ey have long been used on cars capable of over 160 m.p.h. Imagine how fast they can make the Renault 10 stop.

4-speed synchromesh transmission This design synch ronizes the soeeds

of the engine and the transmission to allow the gears to mesh easi ly. Which makes shifting a lot easier on you and your transmission.

Wet s leeve When the cylinders wear out in a conventional engine, the whole engine has to be pulled out and rebored. (Somet imes it pays to buy a new car.) A Renault 10 piston moves in a removable wet sleeve. ( It's 'wet' because it's surrounded by liquid coolant.) If the sleeve wears out, it can be easi ly replaced.

Liquid cooling system with expansion tank

Water-cooled engines are much qu ieter than air-cooled engines. But in ordinary water-cooled engines, water and anti-freeze can frequently overflow and escape. Our system, however, has a tank which keeps the overflow from escaping. So you won't have to add anything. (But we do recommend checking the system about every 18 months.)

5-main bearing eng ine Instead of three bear ings, we support the crankshaft at five points, ( which is more than some six cylinder engines do).

Draft-free ventilation On a hot day you don't have to get your hair blown off. You can roll up the windows, open the dashboard vents, crack the back windows, and enjoy a little peace and quiet.

Rack and pinion steering Driving is no time for playing. That's why we use a system that eliminates play in the steering wheel.

1n1s ctOtH,cs ;o ~~ "'f.'w cars (t~ch.•S•ve ('if n1ntor R•nao.~lts. o' course) avJ table n IN~ U"''·U~J Statt'S. .,, l.,~e l!"'t .. cf Qfttl l n' of vus •a Whitewall,;, automali\: transmission, air ronditioninst optional.

KESSLER MOTORS RIDGE AT LAKE

Turning c ircle of 30 feet A short turning circle means you can make most u-turns in one clean sweep. (That funny little car you've seen so much of has a t urning circle of 36 feet. )

2-speed hot-water heater and double outlet defroster (at no extra cost )

Our heater u~s the same hot water that circulates a round the engine. And because water heats more evenly than air, our system can produce more even heat than any of the air-type heaters.

11 cubic feet of trunk capacity We're not the biggest in this compartment but we're not the smallest, either. The smallest has 2.3 cubic feet, which is about as much space as we have behind our back seat.

A separate compartment for t he spare tire

If you get a flat, you don't have to unload all your luggage to unload your spare tire. And you don't have to get dirt on everything when you put the fiat tire away.

15 inch wheel A la rger wrr t!l makes fewer revolutions to go the same distance. Which means you save rubber. Which means you save money.

Acceleratior,t 0-60 in 15.0 seconds Top speed 84 m.p.h.

Tsn't that fast enough?

Now there's a Jaguar XK-E for everyone.

Two-seater convertible, two-seater coupe. Now the new 2+2 with automatic transmission. This newest Jaguar has more headroom and leg-room than the 2-seater models, a fully up

holstered rear seat for two passengers, easier entry through a wider door, and the choice of automatic transmission or the standard 4-speed fully synchromesh gearbox. It's a dual-purpose car, built to accommodate 4 passengers, or to be used as a 2-seater with sedan-like proportions for luggage. With the rear seatback moved forward, there is almost 4¥2 feet of cargo length. See it at

Some day, all convertibles will have a roll bar. At last. The basic problem of open car safety has been solved. With a roll bar fully integrated into the car's total design. The world 's firs t production-series conver tible to have it is now here.

That's the new Porsche Targa, the competi tion-bred car named for the Targa Florio (the punishing Sicilian mountain road race that's become one of Porsche's most successful proving grounds).

Li ke most Porsche innovations, the Targa's distinctive roll bar is a racing idea. That's why i t's as logical and functional as

a safety pin. It makes the Targa secure as a coupe, with race-track protection for everyday driving. The stainless-steel-covered roll bar also separates top and back, so they can be used independently as well as together:

Top and windows down: Fully open to sky and breeze.

Windows up: Airflow stays out. A woman's hairdo is safe at any speed.

Top up and rear w indow down: Cool enjoyment of open-air, daytime driving.

Top and windows up: Closed-car com·

fo rt, shielded against rain, snow or cold. Porsche offers the Targa in three ver

sions, the 912, 911 and 91 1l , with the same air-cooled, rear-mounted engines and equipment developed for Porsche's coupPs. Common to all Targa s are Porsch ... s famous four-wheel disc brakes, full -synchromt:!sh transmission, and the trouble-free performance inherent in every Porsche. Coupo pr;ces statt about $4950. Social Drinker - Menace

The self-confident social drinker is a greater menace behind the wheel of a car than the habitual drunk.

The '· drunk" driver often enjoys a kind of bui1t-in protection when he drives his car weavingly down the st reet. It is generally not too difficult for other drivers and pedestrians to note his condition and avoid him. But, of course, not in all cases.

Much more dangerous is the driver who returns from a party or other social engagement with two or three drinks under his belt. He has just enough alcohol in his system to release inhibitions often giving him the necessary daring to take chances in traffic. At the same time he acquires an exaggerat~d opinion of his driving abi lity, he generally lacks the necessary physical and psychological qualifications to be behind the wheel. This, needless to say, is an explosive combination.

More than 20 per cent of drivers killed in traffic accidents have been drinking. A s tudy by the Associat ion of Casualty and Surety Companies showed that drinking drivers were involved in 130,143 accidents of all types during one recent year.

Individual reaction to a lcohol varies to such a

degree that it is impossible to predict its affect on driving abi lity in general. While one driver may be able to consume five drinks and retain most (but not all ) of his physical faculties, another motorist will be almost incapable of shifting gears smoothly after onlv two.

The Following suggestions on drinking are made to motorists:

( l ) Do not try to judge your own capacity for alcohol. While you may think you are a much better driver after a drink or two, you are not.

(2) If you have been drinking, no matter how much or little, let someone else do the driving. or use public transportation.

The average motor veh icle today lasts 4.5 years longer than in 1925, when 6.5 years was the typical age of vehicles when scrapped. Today, the u sual age of cars headed for the junk heap is 11 years or more. Accumulated mileage during a motor vehicle's life time has quadruplecf-from 25 ,750 in 1925 to over 100 ,000 t oclny.

Hinged Window Design

Extends Applications

of Tempered

Auto Glass

i\ unique fo lding window, developed by Corning Glass Works, allows lightweight chemically strengthened glass to be used a!' the backlight in any current model convert ible auto.

The new window svstem, wh ich uses a flexible hinge o f sil icone rubber: allows the backlight to fold Lo !It the window wel l as the top is lowered. The development permits glass to be used in convertibles in which ck sign or styling limitations preclude installa-1 ion of a single piece of glass.

The llrs t application uf the hinged window was un the 1967 Ford Mustang convertible.

Ford firs t used chemically s trengthened glass in its 1904 Furcl Galaxic and Mercury convert ibles-the first usc or tempered glass in con'vertible backlights. In 1966 models , Ford used glass backl ights in all convertibles except Mus tang. where a s ingle piece of glass was not practical.

Corning's chemically s trengthened glass is the thinnes t, strongest automobile glass available, the company saist. It is ulfered as an option on all 1968 Mustang conver tibles.

The glass is onlv 0.085-inch thick (almost one-third thinner and lighter than Vii-inch-thick automobile glass) . yet is five times s t ronger than ~tandard annealed sheet glass.

Because it is glas~. the new window will not scratch o r discolor, and thus offers improved visibility and safl'ty. H an extreme impac t should break the glass, it "dice~" in small , harmless particles.

The Mustang window is about 14 inches high and 42 inches wide, with the flexible hinge running horizontally across the center of the window. The hi nge is a translucent Dow-Corning Silas tic rubber which is thermally bonded to the glass by a process developed by Corning.

Coming is working with all American auto manufacturers to develop specialized glass for automobile application, and also supplies a Jine of replacement backlights for mos t convertibles made since 1960.

Further information about automotive applications of chemically s trengthened glass is available from Corning's Transportat·ion Products Department, Corning, N. Y. 14830.
