FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
We are now 14 days into a year we’ve never seen before and we must continue to make the best of the days ahead. Today we celebrate with our bereaved families. Our Memorial Sunday is a time to honor and remember the lives of our dear departed saints. Always remember that you never lose that which you
love. It is my prayer that through this time of sharing with these families today they will know that in their grieving hour, their church family is only a prayer and a phone call away. First Calvary, reach out to them with a hug or an encouraging word. I would remind each of us to “Live Each Moment, Love Beyond Words, and Laugh Every Day” in tribute to those we have lost.
We also celebrate and remember the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. On tomorrow, America will pause as a nation to celebrate our annual recognition of his birthday. Starting this evening, our youth will once again participate in our Annual MLK Youth Lock-In where emphasis will be placed on how Dr. King’s life can inspire us to a life of service. Our Youth Council, in conjunction with DPR, Duke-Durham Partnership and the West End Community Foundation, Inc., will host young people between the ages of 12 – 18 on Sunday and Monday. We do this each year it because it provides an opportunity for our youth to engage in fun activities while giving them a chance to hear about the principles of Dr. King that deal with respect and responsibility. Thanks to our Youth Council for keeping this dream alive since it began so many years ago.
Many of you did not attend Church Conference on Wednesday, January 10th, so I ask you to either go online to read the 2018 Pastoral Message or stop by the Atrium area and pick up a copy. Let me encourage you who are present this morning in worship to help encourage others that are not here to attend Worship as often as they can (as scripture states in Hebrews 10:24). It’s 2018, a New Year…and here are some goals… let’s have at least 400 people in either of our Worship Services…let’s have at least 200 in Sunday School and 100 in Bible Study each week. On behalf of Minister Carter and our Christian Education Ministry, I would like to remind you that Sunday School and Bible Study are two opportunities where we can learn and grow as disciples of Jesus Christ. It’s a great time to add joining our study ministries to your 2018 “to do” list . Let’s do our best to increase our attendance commitment to this congregation.
It’s Leadership Month at First Calvary! Leaders, wanna be leaders, Church Officers, and Ministers are expected to attend the Annual Leadership Conference on Saturday, January 27th. Author John C. Maxwell has previously shared the following in his devotional writing, “What does it take to have the focus required to be a truly effective leader? The keys are priority and concentration. A leader who knows his/her priorities but lacks concentration knows what to do, but never gets it done. If he has concentration but no priorities he has excellence without progress. But when he harnesses both, he has the potential to achieve great things.” As we celebrate Leadership Month, I truly believe that we are a people full of the potential to achieve great things. Remember always that we are AN EXCITING CHURCH EXCITED ABOUT ITS MISSION!
THE DEACON’S MESSAGE
Quid Pro Quo, it means to substitute or one thing in return for another. Maybe you worked extra hours last week and because of that you were paid overtime. Or, it could be you were having one of the worst days of your life last week and someone stopped by and made you laugh pushing away your sadness. At times, having a substitute is wonderful and other times things are not necessarily equal in the exchange. A perfect example is found in Isaiah 53:5 (NKJV). It says, “But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by his stripes we are healed.” I cannot fathom the love it required for God to make such an exchange. He substituted our sins for his sorrow, our unrighteousness for His Son’s righteousness, and our lives for the death of His Son. When you look at yourself in the mirror every morning remember your life for Christ’s death was not an equal exchange… yet, God felt you were worth it. That is reason enough to praise Him today.
