SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

JANUARY 15, 2017

First Reading: Isaiah 49:3, 5-6 This reading is a short passage from the second song of the Servant of the Lord. The Lord will show his glory through His servant whose mission is to restore Israel and bring salvation “to the ends of the earth.” Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:1-3 Paul sends greetings to the people of Corinth, who have been called to be holy and consecrated in Christ. Gospel: John 1:29-34 When Jesus visits John, John recognizes Jesus as the “Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” John further indicates that Jesus is truly the Messiah and “God’s chosen One.”

WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY

The Church Unity Octave, a forerunner of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, was developed by Servant of God Father Paul

Wattson, SA, at Graymoor in Garrison, New York, and was first observed at Graymoor from January 18-25, 1908. The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is an expression of the ecumenical movement — a worldwide movement among Christians to heal the divisions within the Church; to promote dialogues among churches and Christian communities; and to encourage Christians everywhere to better understand and reflect the implications of “one Lord, one faith, one baptism.” Each year from January 18 to 25, Christians are encouraged to pray together as a sign of the unity that is already theirs in Christ and that that unity will become complete.

God of all, we pray as one, that we may be one, just as the Lord Jesus prayed we may be one in Him. Your son Jesus compels us to be reconciled to one

another. May our spirits be joined to your Holy Spirit,

that we may witness to the visible unity of your Church.

May we all recognize that we are truly one with you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit and grow together in

peace. We ask this in the name of Jesus our Lord. Amen.

FEEDING OUR NEIGHBORS ARCHDIOCESAN-WIDE FOOD CAMPAIGN

Sunday, January 29th– Sunday, February 5th Every year nearly 325,000 children go hungry in the Archdiocese of New York. You can help do something here at the local community and county levels by your participation in this year’s Feed Our Neighbors campaign. Your donations will help our local neighbors who receive much needed support through our parish SVDP food pantry. Your donations will also help support the ongoing work of CCCSR (Catholic Charities Community Services of Rockland) in their ongoing outreach to our needy brothers and sisters right here in Rockland County. Throughout the campaign, we will display the familiar Feeding Our Neighbors boxes in the church and PREP lobbies. PREP Parents may bring your donations when you drop off your children for religious education classes. Donations may also dropped off when you arrive for mass to mass or else dropped off in the church any day between 8 AM and 6 PM. Please see next Sunday’s bulletin insert for list of needed items. _____________________________________________

The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish American kid bored with his life. His father served in World War II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam; now it was his turn. His 365 days in Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death.

In this memoir, set as deeply in his mind as in the Southeast Asian jungle, a young American soldier embarks

on a journey to a war that, for him, will never be over.
