Sacrificial Gifts of Treasure March 3
rd & 4
th, 2018
St. Patrick’s of Tekamah:
“‘For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son….”
- John 3:16- Of all the wonderful gifts that God has given to us, the gift of His own Son is truly the greatest. How can we ever thank God for a gift like that? God does not ask us to sacrifice our own precious firstborn, but He does ask that we are grateful and generous with our God-given gifts. That we nurture and develop them and return with increase. Children’s good deed: “I helped at the tea and water table at the Fish Fry; I made a picture for my grandma and grandpa; I cleaned my room.”

Let my tongue be silenced, if I ever forget you!
(Psalm 137)
From Fr. Kevin…
On this Fourth Sunday of Lent our mass
readings remind us that sin is a forgetfulness
and love is a remembrance. In the first
reading from second Chronicles we hear of
the bad fruit of forgetting God’s love. In
giving us Jesus, our Heavenly Father has
shown us the depths of His Love for us:
“God who is rich in mercy, because of the
great love he had for us, even when we were
dead in our transgressions, brought us to life
with Christ”. In his Letter to the Romans, St.
Paul words it this way: “But God proves his
love for us in that while we were still sinners
Christ died for us” (Rom. 5:8). The great
love of God spoken of in our second reading
from St. Paul to the Ephesians is similar to
the description of God’s Love spoken of in
the Gospel of St. John this Sunday: “God so
loved (so= ‘to a great extent’) the world that
he gave his only Son” (John 3;16). The love
of God is greater than our sins, for God is
greater than our hearts. So great is God’s
love for us that he handed over His only Son
to be our expiation—to be our substitution
(to die on the cross instead of us). The key to
Lent—and to the entirety of the Christian life
--is to experience this “great love” of God
and to practice it in our lives. Peace,

FAITH FACT
Mercy In the Old Testament, mercy usually identifies a complex Hebrew idea that describes God’s special covenant love. God’s attitude of love or attachment to the covenant partners includes aspects of loyalty, dependability, trustworthiness, and an eagerness to help when situations turn bad. Paul echoes this fierce fidelity by describing God’s eagerness to rescue or save us when we were alienated by sin. God’s desire to be in relationship with us keeps God alert to our cries for help and eager to deliver us from what separates us from God.

On this third Sunday of Lent we hear that God is both “jealous” and zealous—both of which speak of the
uncompromising nature of His love. In the first reading from The Book of Exodus, God speaks forth the Ten
Commandments and says, “For I, the LORD, your God, am a jealous God. This is not the sin of jealousy.
Rather, in the Bible, the covenant between God and his people is spoken of as being like a marriage. God is
“jealous” because His love cannot bear the unfaithfulness or the indifference of his chosen people. He desires
an exclusive relationship of faithful love. In the Gospel of John, Jesus cleanses the Temple in Jerusalem of
money changers and animals saying, “Take these out of here, and stop making my Father’s house a
marketplace.” The words and action of Jesus remind his disciples of a scripture from Psalm 69:10: “Zeal for
your house will consume me.” In the Bible, zeal is the passion burning in the heart of the holy God living in
the midst of His people. During the season of Lent, God calls each of us to grow in our exclusive relationship
of faithful love towards God, and charity towards humanity.
