GATHERING MUSIC FANTASIA: THIS IS THE DAY BOB MOORE

ENSEMBLE MUSICIANS

As you prepare your heart for worship during the prelude, you are invited to pray: Lord, I need times of rest in my life. I need to recharge my batteries. As I worship today, help me to feel

your presence and hear your voice. Amen.

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Welcome to Zumbro Lutheran Church! SUNDAY, JAN. 19, 2020

Our current sermon series is

“Following Jesus to Surprising Places” The Gospel of Mark was likely the first gospel to be written. Unlike Luke and Matthew, Mark forgoes any stories of Jesus’ birth and instead starts with the story of his baptism. After forty days of testing in the wilderness, Jesus arrives in Galilee with some really good news. Soon he’s inviting ordinary people – including fishermen, tax collectors, and others - to come and follow him. They become his disciples.

Our sermon series this winter will pick up the story of those disciples as they’re “Following Jesus to Surprising Places.” The action is fast-paced. Mark uses the word “immediately” a lot. Jesus heals the sick and his reputation begins to spread. Before long, Jesus attracts the attention of the religious leaders, and they vow to keep an eye on him. As readers, we wonder where this story is heading and what will be the cost for Jesus and his followers. Clearly, there’s a lot on the line.

Special thanks to David Erickson for creating the beautiful mural at the front of the sanctuary. The inspiration for the mural is the spread of the news of Jesus and his teaching as told in the book of Mark. Concentric lines symbolize the spreading of the word of Jesus, while the greens reflect the Epiphany theme of growing in our faith.

Prayers for healing are today. Following communion, if you seek healing for yourself or someone you know, you are invited to stop at a prayer station.

There is a monitor in the lounge for anyone to watch a live broadcast of the service.

Young children are most welcome with us at worship. If needed, the nursery is available and staffed during all services. Please ask an usher for directions.

Our 8:30am service is live-streamed and posted online.

Please silence your cell phones and pagers.

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS L: Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, Love from the beginning, Word made flesh, Breath of heaven. C: Amen. L: Let us confess our sinfulness before God and one another, trusting in God’s endless

silence for reflection and self-examination

L: Merciful God, C: we confess that we are not perfect. We have said and done things we regret.

We have tried to earn your redeeming grace, while denying it to others. We have resisted your call to be your voice in the world. Forgive us, loving God. Give us your righteousness, the strength to put aside our failures, and the courage

to try again. L: Dear people of God, hear the good news: Christ the Savior is born! You are loved and

forgiven in the name of ☩ Jesus, who has come among us. You are freed from proving that you deserve to be loved, because God’s love is given to you as the most precious gift of all. Rejoice in this love and share it with the world.

THE THIRD COMMANDMENT L: Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy. What does this mean? C: We are to fear and love God, so that we do not despise God’s word or preaching,

but keep that word holy and gladly hear and learn it.

BIBLE READING MARK 2:23-3:6 NRSV

One sabbath he was going through the grainfields; and as they made their way his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. 24The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the sabbath?” 25And he said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need of food? 26He entered the house of God, when Abiathar was high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and he gave some to his companions.” 27Then he said to them, “The sabbath was made for humankind, and not humankind for the sabbath; 28so the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath.”

Again he entered the synagogue, and a man was there who had a withered hand. 2They watched him to see whether he would cure him on the sabbath, so that they might accuse him. 3And he said to the man who had the withered hand, “Come forward.” 4Then he said to them, “Is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the sabbath, to save life or to kill?” But they were silent. 5He looked around at them with anger; he was grieved at their hardness of heart and said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. 6The Pharisees went out and immediately conspired with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him.

HYMN 820 O SAVIOR, PRECIOUS SAVIOR

APOSTLES’ CREED C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy

Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

8:30AM ALL BELONG HERE LENORA RAND AND HANNAH RAND JENNY KRUSE AND JANNETTE REEVES, VOCALISTS

When you’re not sure who you really are, when all you feel is the shape of your scars, And you have more wounds than you can count, open your eyes, look all around, You aren’t alone, this is your home.

Come and remember who you are here. Do this to remember who I am. Come and remember you belong here. All belong here.

When you don’t know how to forgive, when locked doors seem like the only way to live,

And you’ve got more questions than you can count, open your eyes, look all around, You aren’t alone, this is your home. Refrain

At this table come as you are, broken and bleeding’s ok. At this table eat and be filled, come and drink in this grace. Refrain

10:30AM THERE’S A WIDENESS IN GOD’S MERCY FREDERICK WILLIAM FABER ZUMBRO LUTHERAN CHOIR AND MAURICE BEVAN

There's a wideness in God's mercy, like the wideness of the sea; There's a kindness in God's justice which is more than liberty.

There is no place where earth's sorrows are more felt than up in heaven. There is no place where earth's failings have such kindly judgment given.

For the love of God is broader than the measure of our minds; And the heart of the Eternal is most wonderfully kind.

But we make God’s love too narrow by false limits of our own; And we magnify God’s strictness with a zeal God will not own.

There is plentiful redemption in the blood that has been shed; There is joy for all the members in the sorrows of the Head.

There is grace enough for thousands of new worlds as great as this; There is room for fresh creations in that upper home of bliss.

If our love were but more simple we should take God at God’s word; And our lives would be all gladness in the joy of Christ our Lord.

HYMN 471 LET US BREAK BREAD TOGETHER

BLESSING L: The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthem you and keep you in his grace. C: Amen.

C: Amen.
