Happy New Year from the Next Chapter Kansas City program! For those of you who may not be familiar with it, the origins of Next Chapter KC date back to the early 2000’s with the Shepherd’s Center realizing that persons in the Baby Boomer Generation (born 1946 to 1964) would soon be reaching age 65 in record numbers, and that some would be interested in a career transition as early as their mid-50’s as they anticipated the “next chapter” in their lives. A Next Chapter project began with funding from the Jewish Heritage Foundation and the George Nettleton Home, Inc in 2007-08. Nine other organizations in KCK and Wyandotte County became partners with the Shepherd’s Center in this project. They include El Centro, KCK Chamber of Commerce, KCK Community College, KCK Public Library, Landon Center on Aging, Leadership 2000, Liveable Neighborhoods, Workforce Partnership, and Wy/Leav Area Agency on Aging. An Executive Council representing these 10 organizations gave initial guidance to the project and this gave way to the Wyandotte County Boomer Survey conducted in 2008-09, and then the development of the online Exploring Jobs Courses in conjunction with KCK Community College, the Aligning Passion and Purpose class, and several book group discussions. For the past year, a newly-formed Next Chapter Program Committee, chaired by Cris Siebenlist, has been meeting to review programs and identify additional specific areas of focus. We had a very full and developing year in 2013 with monthly Informational/ Networking Sessions starting in October, an ongoing almost monthly Next Chapter Book Group meeting all year in conjunction with the KCK Public Library, an Aligning Passion and Purpose class during November, and the offering of the Exploring Jobs Courses in the Spring, Summer and Fall Terms at KCKCC. There was also a Focus Group during June. Feel free to visit the Next Chapter KC website at www.nextchapterkc.org. The Book Group will be meeting on Tuesday, January 28 at the South Branch Library, KCK, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and the Informational/ Networking session will be held at Donnelly College on Thursday, January 30 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. There is no charge for the Book Group. Please contact Karen Hostetler for more details and to register for the January Informational/Networking session. Also, please feel free to contact Karen (me) with questions regarding interest for yourselves, family, friends, church members, etc. at [email protected] or by phone at (913) 281-8908. The Shepherd’s Center legacy of encouraging and challenging persons to live fulfilling and contributing lives in the second half of life continues through the Next Chapter KC program.

- Karen Hostetler, Next Chapter Kansas City Director.

From the Executive Director I am so pleased and honored to be named the Executive Director of the Shepherd’s Center of KCK! I have more than 10 years of experience working with the Center; I’ve been on the board, served as the board chair, and also on staff as the community outreach director. 2014 is off to a running start and I am really happy to serve in this role for our community’s older adults (and Baby Boomers!). The New Year also brings new directors and officers to our board table, and I am excited to introduce those new faces to you in February. Finally, I want to honor and thank Diane Hentges for her many years of service to all of us, through her work as the volunteer coordinator at the United Way of Wyandotte County. Diane was a wonderful partner and we will miss her, but wish her a happy and healthy retirement. We are honored to be a United Way agency; our friends at the United Way are not only funders, they are day-in and day-out partners in our work. – Melissa Bynum, Executive Director
