love for his opponent. “We’re really good friends,” he says. “That’s the reason we agreed to do it. There’s people who do this to try to kill each other, but that’s not us. We’re going to have some fun with it.” That doesn’t mean the pair are going to get in the ring and hug it out. Both have been training multiple times a week with coaches – sparring, running, lifting weights and watching what they eat. See Gaines with his coach here. And as for who they’d put their money on? “I’m not going to underestimate Scott ‘No Pain No’ Gaines,” says Waters. “He has

really been training hard, but if I were you, I’d still put my money on Shiney.” Laughs Gaines, “Who would you put your money on? Some-one with four years experience (me) or someone who has never been in a ring?” The card also features Sony/Nashville’s Adam Davis, who will square off against MGC Sports founder Alan Bulling-ton. Davis signed up for two rea-sons: 1. Kick some ass. 2. Take some names. JK. He primarily

volunteered to help raise money and awareness for the Charley Foundation, but also, selfishly he admits, to challenge himself both physically and mentally. “I have never been in a fight or trained at this level, so it has been an extremely rewarding experience already,” Davis says. “Training and fighting in this event is something a lot of people think I am crazy for doing and, as I get older, I feel more compelled

to do things that get me out of my comfort zone. This definitely accomplishes that.” Like Gaines and Waters, these two are taking the match, as well as the training and preparation, very seriously. Davis’ workouts include 60-90 min of high intensity exercis-es, and his trainer is Ghana’s former mid-dleweight boxing champion Sena Agbeko. He hasn’t had a “Rocky getting knocked out by Clubber” moment yet, but will never forget his first sparring session with fellow participant, Riser House/Song Factory’s Brandon Perdue. “I took a really hard hook to the head,” Davis says. “Brandon landed a clean shot on me. It was something I am glad I experi-enced and will try to minimize as best I can now that I know what it feels like ... not a fan.” Alan “The Bullpen” Bullington, as his friends are calling him, had a similar eye-opening experience. “Let’s just say I made a mistake during a sparring session with my fellow Rumble participant and training partner Andy Velo that I won’t make again.” Bullington is confident, but Davis warns, “You’d be a damn fool not to put your money on me! I am leaving everything in the ring that night on March 1. I am not busting my ass to go in there and lose. Plus, Sony is due for a win, and I figure it might as well be me.” Charley Foundation Founder/Chairman Carolyn Miller is ready to Rumble. “This year’s boxers are all fierce competitors in their industries, and we can expect them to bring the same intensity into the ring,” she says. “Their commitment to train hard and fundraise to help area children in need is a testament to their character. Nashville’s music industry has been especially instru-

Opry Entertainment Producer & Host of The Set List Jill Wilderman discusses her most influential music:1. Rick Springfield: He was my first show. I was in Kindergarten. I also had a massive crush on him. There’s actually a photo of my mom and I in which my head is buried into her shoulder. I got embarrassed when he came onstage, as if he knew about my crush.2. Garth Brooks: I finally got to see him last year – and he didn’t disappoint. I appreciate the energy he always has for his fans, whether on or offstage.3. Prince: I’m glad I got to see Prince a few years

before his passing. I was like, “I can’t believe I’m hearing these classics come out of his mouth, and he’s here in the flesh.” The first note of each song made the crowd erupt. The show was flawless. 4. “I Hope You Dance”: After college, my roommate gave me a copy along with the lyric book, right as I was headed to Los Angeles to start a career. I still find the lyrics so powerful and such a good reminder to not fear the unknown. Opportunities will come and go but you have to keep knocking on those doors. To this day, I cannot hear it without getting emotional. 5. “The Dance”: This is another song on which I completely lose it. It reminds you to do your best with circumstances given and cherish everyone and every moment. The song is played in my friend’s documentary about his partner’s death, and the unbearable pain he went through losing him. He takes comfort in those precious moments.• Highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: While I do know a couple of songs from each album, I hate to admit that I’ve never listened to Metallica’s Black or The Beatles’ Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club.• An album you played incessantly: Imagine was an older album I played over and over as a kid. I gained a true appreciation for John Lennon and how he expressed himself and his personal views. • Obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Santigold’s “Run the Road.” The lyrics express her experience with the highs and lows of being a musician on the road. She has such a unique sound and approach with her music. Also, any Michael Kiawanuka songs too!• Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: Britney Spears. She’s on my workout playlist, of course!

mental in supporting our mission and helping us to give more than a million dollars to children’s charities these past 15 years.” Warner Chappell VP/A&R Ryan Beuschel will serve as the ring announcer, and additional bouts include artist Velo vs. Riser House/Song Factory’s Perdue and Phivestarr Productions’ Jenny Sciullo vs. Loeb & Loeb’s Farrah Usmani. excited to kick off an action-packed week with Warner and Blake and offer attendees a high-energy way to get into the spirit of CRS 50,” Curtis says. Also new for 2019 is the addition of an educational presen-tation on the opening day. Explains Curtis, “A time management presentation was something our Agenda Committee was very passionate about, and I think all attendees will benefit from the information that is going to be delivered.” Mayne agrees, saying, “This will help everyone make the most out of their work day, their time at CRS and their life in general.” Opening ceremonies will include the presentation of the Tom Rivers Award honoring “Dollar Bill” Lawson, acknowledgement of this year’s Rusty Walker Scholarship recipients, the unveiling of the 2019 class of Country Radio Hall Of Fame honorees and all of the traditional pomp and circumstance. “Look for our opening cere-monies to be a bit different this year, as we tweak the day to include more content and performances on the front end,” says Curtis. Dynamic audio/visual packages, special effects, highlight reels and product giveaways will occur throughout seminar. And an as-yet-unannounced keynote speaker will round out opening day. Learning Is Fundamental: Responding to the aforementioned feedback, more educational panels will be offered and hands-on workshops are being added. “The agenda is stacked, honestly,” says Curtis. “We are continuing to tailor the event to attendees from all market sizes, company sizes and backgrounds.” Thursday kicks off with the return of separate Programming and Sales mentoring break-fasts. A soon-to-be-announced featured speaker will bring attendees in for a single-focus session before workshops get underway for music scheduling, voice and talent coaching and production. “The ‘Metrics That Matter’ panel is a con-tinuation of a series we have done with [Stone Door Media Lab’s] Jeff Green in recent years,” Curtis says. “This will take a deep dive in to the metrics, what they mean, and how to implement them in a programming strategy.” A session on updating live events and remotes will also take place before the annual UMG/Nashville Ryman luncheon. “After the luncheon, it’s right back to content with a Small Market Boot Camp, Selling Digital Today, and a session on

Grassroots Marketing,” explains Curtis. “We are also proud to present our annual research in conjunction with Edison. This year, it has been moved to the afternoon slot, which will allow for great discussion and debate to happen immediately following in a new format that includes – wait for it – beer.” The final day of CRS 50 features the return of the Women’s Mentoring, Digital & Tech and Label Mentoring breakfasts ahead of another featured speaker. The prior day’s hands-on workshops will be held again, allowing those unable to catch the first round to attend the second. “Friday will be filled to the brim with content,” shares Curtis. “Our Digital & Social Media Boot Camp will be exciting and infor-mative. We also have panels focused on programmers working with their sales teams, best practices to react and recover to natural and other disasters and crisis, and the art of storytelling. The storytelling panel will be moving and emotional, as our Agenda Committee has gathered some amazing songwriters and storytellers to help attendees master the art and connect with their audience.” Another research-based panel, “The Hidden Demo,” will be held before a break for the BMLG label lunch and performance. Friday concludes with “Smart Programming for Smart Speakers,” a panel about perfecting the artist visit/interview and the always highly attend-ed artist-focused session, this year featuring Jason Aldean. All Party The Experience: As any prior CRS attendee can attest, networking, label events and parties are integral. This year will be no exception with CRS After Hours events planned for all three nights of the event. Amazon reprises last year’s event with a new look and feel, among many other gatherings showcasing established artists and newcomers. And with Valentine’s Day falling during CRS 50, the CRB has again offered a spouse regis-tration rate. “Bring your significant other, enjoy some great music and quality time in the city and do it all together for a discounted spouse rate,” recommends Curtis. As always, CRS will conclude with the CRS New Faces of Country Music dinner and performance, with Jimmie Allen, Russell Dickerson, Lindsay Ell, Lanco and Dylan Scott. The evening will also include the bestowing of 2019 CRS/Country Aircheck Awards, for which voting is currently underway here. But wait, there’s more! “I have some surprises in store that even RJ and the CRB staff don’t know about quite yet,” Mayne says. “It’s going to be a great year.” The registration rate goes up on Jan. 14; save $100 now by registering here. –Monta Vaden CAC
