THE PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Well the snow has all melted away, and it is looking a lot like spring already. The details for our summer lineup of social activities are getting firmed up. So start marking your calendars for the events that tickle your fancy.

At our next business meeting (April 13th), nominations and elections for the position of President, Secretary, Trip Chair, LSN/Merchandise, and Ski Queen will be conducted. Now is the time to help shape your club into its future. If you are thinking about your shot at the bright lights of fame, nudge your buddy to nominate you, or even nominate yourself, at the meeting.

A great big THANK YOU to all of those in attendance at the Worker‟s Party for the efforts put forth during and through-out the last year. Steak, chicken, and fish were the main entrees, with a whole load of potatoes, veggies and camaraderie. Bill Nappi endured a grill that was being less than cooperative, so the dinner happened a little late. But Gary and Vickie Pavell once again brought the “Wii Ski” to keep the natives from getting too restless.

TRIP COMMITTEE REPORT

Well, the snow has gone, and so has the ski season. Hope you had plenty of ski opportunities this year. Thanks to everyone who went on any of our day or week trips this year. Your participation on the trips makes them possible. Without your support, the Goodyear Ski Club would just be the Goodyear Club.

The last weeklong trip has returned from a successful stay at Steamboat Springs,

Colorado. See Warren Ripple‟s article on pages 4 & 8 for the details.

Trip Committee is hard at work on next year’s schedule. If you have any ideas for a trip next year, please communicate with any member of the committee (Jerry & Linda Solnick, Warren Ripple, Thurl Carmany, Bill Nappi, William Stuart, Linda Slicker, MaryBeth Dombrosky, and Dave Mueller). We are open to your input and suggestions. Hope to see everyone at our summer and fall events --- until then, goodbye.

VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT - Mark Murphy

Our 2010 GSC Social Event Calendar is filling up thanks to many past Social Event Coordinators and some new ones agreeing to undertake these tasks.

6/6/10 (Sun) – GSC ANNUAL PICNIC Mark your calendars for our annual picnic to be held at the Moose Lodge 918 on State Road/Old Route 8 in Cuyahoga Falls. More information will be in the May newsletter.

6/12/10 (Sat) – SPRING BIKE RIDE Norbert Majerus has agreed to coordinate our Spring Bike Ride starting in Peninsula (Cuyahoga Valley NP) on the towpath with a final lunch stop at the Winking Lizard. See the application on page 6 for additional information. Norbert is an avid biker and will arrange for great, fun rides!

TBD (Fri)- AKRON AEROS GAMES Rita Tinker is checking out this year‟s ticket prices for the Akron Aero‟s for Friday firework games in July and August. Rita is in need of a head count for these two (usually Friday night) events. In order to buy the right amount of tickets, please contact Rita at the next business meeting, or call 330-867-3982, if you are interested. The games are an inexpensive and a fun evening for family and friends to enjoy. Look for more info in next month‟s newsletter.

7/17/10 (Sat) – GOLF SCRAMBLE Bob Seidel has secured Spring Hills again for our annual Golf Scramble. The Cleveland Metro Golf Outing is July 24th, so there will be no conflict. Bob is looking for help seeking prizes, and also help the day of the scramble. So give him a call at 330-665-3061. You don‟t even have to be a golfer! Just show up, whack at a few golf balls, and have fun. No inflation on the cost of this outing, as Bob has kept it at $50 per golfer. The application is in the newsletter on page 7.

TBD - WILLY WORKOUT William Stuart is considering offering again the Willy Workout followed by a picnic with homegrown corn and tomatoes from his garden. He needs some feedback on whether the Club wants this event or not. Pass on to William your wishes – pro or con – by e-mail at [email protected] or calling him at 330-416-2215. Hopefully we will plan a date in late August when the corn and tomatoes are ripe.

TBD - FALL BIKE RIDE Sandy Sucky and Larry Steele have agreed to coordinate our Fall Bike Ride, so that is in the works too.

TBD - ROAD RALLY Mary Beth Dombrosky and Randy Grether, last year‟s organizers of the Road Rally, will be organizing it again this year. I have been told Road Rally course designers are wanted and to keep it a secret – so it we may be in for a surprise route this year. Look for further information towards summertime.

TBD - Euchre Party Linda Slicker will host our annual Euchre Party again this fall. We are looking at doing a reduced cost version, possibly at someone‟s home, etc., so we can have nice prizes. More info will follow.

TBD - Wine Tasting & Bonfire & Games Jim & Zee Kovach are again providing the amenities of JaZee Acres this fall for our Wine-Tasting & Bonfire & Games Party. Jim wants to try for the Guinness Book of Records for the most, empty bottles per capita attending, so we may want to include sleeping bags! ----------------------- If you have any new ideas for events or would like to host an event, please contact me at [email protected], or call 330-699-1188. ----------------------- Note on Past Ski Season -- When you see a member of our Trip Committee, make sure you acknowledge all the hard work and time they put in to making our ski trips a success. Despite the economy, GSC had a terrific season of day, and week-long trips, so “Thanks, Trip Committee!”

March 6-13, 2010 Most of us arrived at Cleveland Hopkins Airport Saturday morning and suffered through the United

Airlines check-in process with irritation, but with no real anxiety over making it to the gate in time for takeoff. As it was, the Chicago bound plane departed Cleveland twenty minutes late, with everyone on the trip making it onto the plane at least 4 minutes before the doors closed. The rest of the trip out was mostly uneventful. All 42 participants arrived safe and sound – and I think all the equipment too!

Once at the Timber Run Condominiums, the efficient staff checked us in, with most people having ample time to get groceries before the wine & cheese reception at 5 PM. Timber Run put out a good sample of wines and cheeses. Afterwards, some people wanted something a little more substantial. About 17 of us, including Bill & Suzanne Nappi, found our way to Rex‟s American Grill, where we were promptly seated, and found that the people in Steamboat Springs are exceptionally friendly, even to the point of doing individual bills.

We had an exceptionally warm and sunny spring day on Sunday. About half the group showed up to take one of the free mountain tours at 10:30 am. One group‟s guide was a lady who even knew what the Goodyear Ski Club is, as she was a Cleveland Public School system teacher and member of the Hi Rise Ski Club. She then retired and moved out to Steamboat Springs. Most everyone overdressed a bit that day. Some even ended up a little burnt from the sun. The snow got pretty soft by 2 PM, but it was an excellent first day to get the rust off their skis.

Monday we had very different weather due to the clash of warmth with the cold snow. There was about one hour of mixed clouds (below) before the fog really settled in. The fog was worse than that in Whitefish -- and that is saying something. Debbie Young even skied right past a lodge her group was going for (couldn‟t see it across

the slope), and ended up following a cowbell from a Steamboat tour group to get down to the gondola top area. Luckily, the bottom area was below the cloud, allowing us die-hards to finish off the day. That evening, around 20 members joined Warren & Judy Ripple at Mambo Italiano for dinner. Afterwards, Mike Bartenstein had the whole group on the shuttle bus, including Rita Tinker, Ken Neff, & Mark Murphy, rolling in the aisle with his humor. Our bus driver commented that he had heard a lot of stuff driving the bus, but our group took things to a “whole „nother level”.

Tuesday looked like it was going to be a repeat of Monday. But surprise!! When you got off the gondola, things were beautiful. Cell phones rang and everyone got up the hill to enjoy the day. A mid-week party was held in a private dining room at the Steamboat Smokehouse, where everyone showed up to enjoy a selection of barbequed chicken, pork and beef, served up by another friendly staff. We also found out that some members, like Dale Wolboldt and Pam Korenewych had tried the NASTAR

L-R: Al Santa, Don “Whiskers” Franz, Kim Franz, Linda “Slick” Slicker, Regina & Cameron Fraser,

Linda Sanders, Ed “Rocketman” Coleman, Debbie

Sat., June 12, 2010 9:30 AM Start 12:30 PM Lunch at Winking Lizard

Once again, it’s time for the annual Spring Bike Ride. This year’s ride will start in Peninsula, OH at the

Lock 29 parking lot (behind the Cuyahoga Valley Railway Station). See excerpt of towpath map on next

page. If there is no room in this lot, please use the overflow parking lot. We will have 2 riding groups. The

easy ride will be flat and use the towpath. The more challenging ride will use the towpath and the Bike and

Hike Trail.

After the ride, we will have lunch at the Winking Lizard restaurant, which is within walking distance of

the parking lots. Everyone is on your own to select and pay for lunch.

Directions to Peninsula: From the southwest: take I-77 North to 271 North to 303 East to Peninsula. Turn left on N. Locust St., and

then left on Mill St West.

From southeast: take Route 8 North to 303 West to Peninsula. Turn right on N. Locust St., and then left on

Mill St West.

Parking (Lock 29) is over the tracks behind the railroad station on your left (or, if there is no room there, go

farther north on Mill St to Overflow Parking, which is across the tracks also).

race course already, and that it was Al Santa‟s birthday and Regina Fraser‟s the next week.

Wednesday was a bit overcast, but the snow was nice. In the afternoon, a few of us stopped and watched some NCAA championship racers on the lower part of the hill. That night, another crew got together for Mexican food, using the mini-margarita/appetizer coupons that had been collected. Afterwards, some went shopping, and then checked out a nearby band, 3Wire.

Thursday was a great day for people who like fresh powder. It had started snowing Wednesday night, and it did not stop until Thursday afternoon around 3 PM. Several locals said it was the best snow they had seen this season. Many of the Club members tried tree skiing in the Morningside Area, some for the first time, in powder 12 to 18 inches deep.

Friday brought bright sun and much cooler temperatures. Much of the resort was groomed, bringing much happiness to those who struggled through the powder on Thursday. The snow stayed firm until closing time, providing a perfect day on which to end our skiing. Friday evening, we had an “end-of-week / clean out your condo refrigerator” party at the clubhouse, before retiring to our condos for the sad job of packing for home.

Saturday, we got to the airport early and met some travel delays, due to the mega-rain storms going on from Chicago eastward. The people going through Denver had it a little easier, with a four-hour layover in Denver. Those of us going through Chicago had a special treat of spending too many hours in Hayden. Although this time, the women commandeered a table for a euchre game, while the guys had to make theirs out of suitcases instead. Everyone arrived home on Saturday or Sunday. Where did all of that Northeast Ohio snow go? By the look of the green grass in our back yard, it‟s time to clean up the ski gear and pack things away until next season.

Judy and I had a great time on the Steamboat trip. Thanks to all who joined my trip!
