Each year school administrators, board members and voters are faced with tough decisions.

Teachers, curriculum focuses, class sizes and boundaries are studied, dis-cussed and adjusted as necessary to fit the growing needs of local fami-lies and the resources available.

As districts change and grow, families should keep in mind that they too have important choices to make with regard to their children’s educations. When moving to a new home, moving to a higher-level school, or when interested in chang-ing schools, families should research their options. Public school districts in northern Colorado allow fami-lies flexibility in choosing schools for their children, and private and charter schools are available in many areas as well. Families who opt out of their neighborhood school must provide transportation to their choice school, and should consider factors such as travel time, class sizes, school philosophy and focus.

School of Choice policiesPoudre School District: Parents interested in sending their children to a special-ized school or one that is outside their boundary area should follow the in-structions available at www.psd schools.org/academics/educational- choices/school-choice and complete the application that can be found there. If total applicants for any school exceed available space for that school then an automated lottery system will be utilized. Families who have been accepted will be notified and given two school days to accept or decline. Families who are not accepted will be placed on a waiting list.

Deadline to apply for the 2012-13 school year:

• Elementary: Feb. 10, 2012• Secondary: Jan. 27, 2012

Acceptance emails sent to families:• Elementary: Feb. 13 through Feb. 22

• Secondary: Jan. 30 through Feb. 7

Thompson Valley School District: The district chooses which schools will be available for choice/open enrollment based on available space, staff, and accommoda-tions. The list of choice/open enrollment schools for 2012-13 can be found at www.thompson.k12.co.us/Divisions/Learning_Services/openEnroll OpenClosed.html. Families should visit www.thompson.k12.co.us/Divisions/Learning_Services/schools_of_choice.html for instructions and information regarding the application procedure. Students will be considered for the school of their choice on a first-come, first-served basis.

Applications accepted for the 2012-13 school year:

• Elementary: Jan. 6 through Feb. 27, 2012

• Secondary: Dec. 1, 2011 through Jan. 10, 2012Acceptance notifications to families:

• Elementary: Mar. 7• Secondary: Jan. 20

Weld County District 6: Families inter-ested in choice/open enrollment

should stop by the school office or by the main office at 1025 9th Ave., Greeley for more information. Ap-plications will be accepted providing the requested school is not already at or above capacity, and providing that any special needs can be met for the applying student. For more informa-tion visit www.heiman.greeleyschools.org/domain/832.

Deadline to apply for the 2012-13 school year:

Understanding the optionsMost parents choose their neighborhood school for their children. If you’re checking out other options though, here’s a primer on what you have to choose from here in northern Colorado.

Advanced Placement/College Credit: These are intense courses designed to prepare students for higher education, boost college applications, and in some cases transfer as college credits.

Alternative Program/School: Specialized assistance for students requiring non-traditional learning environments.

Charter School: These schools are publicly funded but operate separately from public schools. They are designed to provide unique educational opportunities and held accountable through monitoring of academic results. See www.nea.org/home/16332.htm for more information.

Core Knowledge: Stresses cumulative learning year to year through a specific outline of curriculum for each grade level. The goal is to prevent repetition and holes in learning from one grade level to the next. Learn more at www.coreknowledge.org/about-the-curriculum.

International Baccalaureate (IB): IB World Schools teach curriculum that is recognized worldwide, and promote compassion and curiosity with the goal of creating a better world. www.ibo.org/index.cfm for more information.

Magnet/Lab School: These schools offer traditional curriculum while allowing students interested in the school’s special focus to pursue it to a greater depth. Many magnet schools integrate their magnet focus into all subjects.

Non-traditional/Experience Based: These schools offer smaller class sizes and hands-on learning. Students complete portfolios of work rather than completing assignments for grades.

Private School: Private schools are funded primarily through tuition, rather than relying on public tax dollars, and therefore choose their own educational methods.

The only differences is that it is much more ef-ficient and comes with a built-in motivator. “I no longer have to worry about getting the child (or

adult) to engage in the activities I have planned. They’re there, and they’re with their horse, and they’re ready, as a team, to do anything I ask of them.” In 2009, Brent and his wife had their first baby boy, Shaw, and it sparked him into action for the dream he’d always had of raising his family out west. After extensive research he flew to Denver with the intention of finding the place to open a second program and, more importantly, finding a place he and his family could call home.

The trip, surprisingly, began and ended in Fort Collins. “It was my first stop in a long line of stops. When I saw the facilities at the foothills campus of Colorado State I was blown away. I couldn’t believe there wasn’t a hippotherapy program already running here. Be-tween the arenas and the students and supportive community that Fort Collins seemed to be it was just the perfect combination. In Atlanta we were doing a lot with far, far less.”

So two and a half years later, here they are. My Heroes at Colorado State is set to begin ac-cepting patients this month at the Adams-Atkinson arena on the foothills campus. “Dr. Black (Director of the Equine Sciences school) and the university have been incredibly supportive. We’re currently in the process of building a ramp to facilitate the mounting and dismounting of our riders and installing a mechanical lift to assist with our more disabled riders. Our volunteer team is wonderful and ever-growing. And our three horses, the ‘heroes’ quotient of My Heroes, have arrived from the National Sports Center for the Disabled and are very happy and very at home here. As are we.”

Brent ApplegAte wAs rAised in Texas and Georgia, got his undergraduate at the University of Georgia and his

masters in physical therapy at the Medical College of Georgia. He worked in the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta system for

six years before founding My Heroes, llc at Chastain Horse Park in 2005. For him, having been raised around horses in

his youth, the connection between horse and therapy was a natural fit. As he explains it, the horse in hippotherapy

is used just as any tool in the clinic.
