    The Dish!:

Brick and BarleyBy Elli de Bown

Its a brand new year, so treat yourself to a fresh new dining experi-

ence! I cant think of a more original spot than the recently visited

Brick & Barley bar and restaurant. What I find most intriguing

about this new Gastropub is the owners unique vision for a din-

ing experience in Grand Forks. Nick and Sarah Horak present a

blossoming hub of activity with something for everyone. With 48

beers on tap, not only do they boast probably the largest selection

of brews in town, they spice it up with an exciting, ever-changing

variety. We print new menus every three weeks, says manager

Mark Kaiser. Plus, with our chalk board selections, youre gonna

find something different every time you come in.

Perhaps so many choices seem almost overwhelming? No worries.

They make it fun and easy with the two test taste method! (ok, I

made that phrase up, but it actually describes it nicely) They let

you try two samples of anything you like before you settle. I found

their suggested tap beer listings in the menu exceedingly helpful

and accurate. But if you really want to make the night interesting,

come on a Sunday or Monday, when they have some lively bar

games. Sunday is Drink Wars. It is literally where you play the

card game War with your bartender and if you win, your drink is

free! Monday gets quirkier, still, with the Spelling Bee(r) Compe-

tition. The bartender challenges you to correctly spell various

words for free drinks. This place knows how to show guests a good

    time.

Im just going to say, straight up, the cookery that goes on in their

kitchen goes above and beyond what anyone might suppose to ex-

pect. At the exquisitely capable hands of Chef John Cho, your taste

buds will be tantalized by his inimitable flair for making the ordi-

nary extraordinary. The menu features familiar favorites, such as

the sweet potato fries, chicken fingers, BLTs and ribeye, but noth-

ing is quite what it seems. The regular fries are subtly seasoned to

perfection, and so far were just talking about fries. We havent

begun to talk about the Philly Cheese Steak! Not your typical

shaved steak, no, they pile on beef tips, of the most tender, juicy

delectability one could only have dreamt about before! The pork

loin was served with red potato mashed, and the most perfect

squash and zucchini. Sliced thin, and sauted in browned butter,

this colorful side beautifully melts away in your mouth. But, what

stopped the show for me was the Korean BBQ sauce with just

enough of a kick to keep you hot, but a sweetness that kept you

wanting more. My friends, I will be dreaming of this sauce for

    days

Even the portion sizes were well calculated. After two appetizers

    (1. the sausage board, including delicious Jalapeo, Polish and An-

douille plus sauerkraut and focaccia bread, not to mention a

punchy brown mustard, and 2. The mac & cheese bites, dipped in a

beer batter with bacon and dill), and two entrees, we were still will-

ing to partake of dessert! Now, this is not to say they werent feed-

ing us enough! To the contrary, the pacing of the kitchen paired

with the perfection of the portions (please dont mind the allitera-

tion), made this one of the most enjoyable dinners I have had in a

long time! Remember what I said about the varied and changing

menu? Every day you can be assured of a vanilla bean ice cream

Sundae with the works. Hot fudge, caramel, whipped cream and

the cherry. But, they also offer their A La Mode of the Day. You

never know what its going to be! This evening we indulged in

homemade Rumchata Cheesecake. We were met with a flawless-

ness in texture, density and flavor that is rare in the delicate craft of

this complex torte. Thank you. Chef John.

From the amusing games over at the 64 foot long butcher block

bar, to the sparkling glass overlooking the downtown bustle, Brick

& Barley offers a refreshing atmosphere that takes you out of the

everyday and into a relaxing, yet happening place. Friends can

gather here and talk over a pint. Play a quiet game of pool in the

back if you have a mind to. Grab a bite before bar close. These

have not been options downtown for quite some time, and we

    gladly welcome them.

I was particularly delighted to find that they also serve a unique

Pancake Brunch on Saturdays and Sundays til 3, with an exotic

array of flavors, such as Gingerbread, Strawberry Cheesecake, Red

Velvet, Boston Cream Pie, Cranberry Apple and even Bacon and

    Beer!

Look for special events, too! With occasional musical acts and

even guest breweries, the Brick and Barley is alive with goings-on!

They recently hosted the Third Street Brewhouse and Junkyard

Brewing Company for what they call a mini tap takeover, where

they talked about their beers, processes and had samples to try of

    their myriad concoctions.

Overall, my friend and I both agree that this is a place to keep com-

ing back to. You never know what to expect, other than the assur-

    ance of a great time!

    AFTER5 ENTERTAINMENTNEWSPAPER INTRODUCES GRAND

    CITIES THE SMARTPHONE APP

This year, After5 Entertainment Newspaper is introducing an all-in-one community app for smart-

phones. The idea is to connect everyone from college students to tourists to permanent residents of

the community to everything that makes the Grand Cities great. The concept also recieved a grant

from the Grand Forks Community and Knight Foundations and can be found on all Android and

    Apple devices.

All articles from After5 will make an appearance, so you can get your fix in on the going-ons in

our community, the latest resturaunt reviews, big interviews and more. Well have an events

calendar, movie listings, coupons, reviews from Yelp! and more. One of the neater features is a

photo-sharing tool called YouSnap in which anyone can share their photos of themselves or

whatever they want of the Grand Cities.

Another big item of the app is a link redirect to Etsy.com. For those who may not know, Etsy is the

leading online marketplace for art. People are able to sell their own art without taking outthousands of dollars in marketing costs, etc. What were doing is redirecting to only local Grand

Forks art. Imagine, several local residents using app to browse through local art and helping out

artists get their craft out. We intend to work with Northern Valley Arts Council in getting artists

    further connected to their community.

People who enjoy going out and enjoying the bar scene but dont want to drive home can use our

dial-a-ride feature with local taxi companies. Just press the name of the taxi company you prefer, and

itll automatically dial you up with them. Our big goal with this is not only convinient for people who

enjoy the bar scene and people who use the taxi service, but also to have a

hand in preventing DUIs if at all possible.

Local photographers will be celebrated as well. Youll be able to view the

    areas best photography.

We also want to give back to Grand Forks in a big way. Every month well be

promoting local charities in various ways. For example at the moment you

can find The Salvation Army on there. During December, by clicking on their

icon, you would have been able to register to ring the bell for them or if you

want to, contribute to them online- all through the app.

Were always open to ideas on how to make the best community app as pos-

sible. This is a unique oppurtunity for Grand Forks and East Grand Forks and

    were always open to suggestions.

With help from the Grand Forks Community and Knight Foundations and

various businesses , well be able to reach out to the whole community,

    especially students on campus.

With the coupon feature, the app will be trend-setting for people to switch

from using clumsily paper coupons to using coupons entirely on their smart phones in town. Well

also allow local stores and businesses to sell their gift cards as well.

You can find the app on Android and Apple stores by searching Grand Cities!, scanning the QR

code on this page, and by visiting After5GF.com.

How can we bring you the best experience possible with our app? Send us an email at After5GF.com

and give us your feedback. If you have or are part of a local charity you want us to promote, or a

business wanting to be a part, or anything else... were all ears. Because our goal is to find the best

way to connect this special community.

By Christy Lemire of Christylemire.comThis is my favorite part of being a critic: the privilege of choosing

the 10 best films of the year. In a year like 2013, its incrediblyhard to narrow it down to just 10. I probably could have picked 10

more, easily but the internal debate is part of the fun. I hope

you had the pleasure of seeing some of these films, as well. And

Id love to hear what youd choose as your favorites.

    1. Gravity

Visually dazzling and emotionally gripping, Gravity held me in

its spell for 90 breathtaking minutes. I still dont know how Al-

fonso Cuaron made this movie how he made us feel as if we

were actually watching Sandra Bullock and George Clooney

struggle for survival in space. But man, is this an astounding

achievement on all levels, from the performances to the editing to

the precise tone, one that had me on the verge of tears much of the

time. (And you guys know what a big deal that is, given how cold-

    hearted and soulless I am.)

    2. American Hustle

Sexy, raunchy, heart-pounding and hilarious, American Hustle is

a complete blast. David O. Russell out-Scorseses Martin Scorsesehimself with this swaggering story of con artists and corruption.

At first it feels as if hes taken his A-list cast including Chris-

tian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence

to the Goodwill store to find the grooviest 70s duds possible for

an elaborate game of dress-up. But the clothes are a reflection of

his characters desperation as they strive for the American dream.

    3. Her

Just completely lovely from start to finish. Spike Jonzes film fea-

tures some of the fantastical notions that are his trademark, but its

also the most grounded in reality of all the movies hes made,

which gives it an emotional immediacy. Joaquin Phoenix plays

perhaps his most regular-guy character yet as a recently divorced

man in a near-future Los Angeles who finds new love with his

    operating system.

    Scarlett Johansson

    is called upon to

    create a complete

    character with only

    her voice and does

    so with great rich-

    ness and human-

    ity.

    4. Stories We Tell

A total original. Sara Polleys film repeatedly astonishes, inspiring

us to rethink not just the documentary format but also the way we

recall events from our own lives. In interviewing members of her

family about their history, she mixes memory, photographs,

archival footage and reenactments. The result is a hazy, sharedtruth, one thats at once personal and universal. At just 34 and with

only her third film, Polley has established herself as an artistic

    master.

    5. Upstream Color

Shane Carruths film is a hypnotic sensory experience a bold,

challenging experiment like nothing else I saw all year. Its a capi-

tal-A art house film with a mesmerizing use of imagery; as writer,

director, composer, editor and star, Carruth throws us in at the

deep end and makes us work. But at its core is the wrenching tale

of two lost souls, with Amy Seimetz giving a brave supporting

    performance as Carruths counterpart.

    6. The Spectacular Now

Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley give beautifully nuanced per-

formances in this authentic and honest look at teen romance. Teller

is the hard-partying popular kid; Woodley is studious and shy.

They wouldnt seem to belong together but bring out the best in

each other. Through long, intimate takes, director James Ponsoldtlets their relationship unfurl in charming, organic fashion, but he

also isnt afraid to make some tough choices with his characters.

    7. Nebraska

Alexander Payne rips the lid off the mythology of the Midwest in

this hilarious and poignant father-son road trip. Bruce Dern gives

an effortless, unadorned performance as an alcohol-addled Korean

War veteran who believes hes won a million-dollar prize and in-

sists on making the 900-mile trek to collect it in person. Will Forte

and June Squibb are among the inspired supporting cast, and the

stark black-and-white cinematography gives everything a bleakly

    beautiful sheen.

    8. Frances Ha

Greta Gerwig absolutely charms in a role thats tailor-made for her

naturalistic screen presence. As a 20something wandering around

New York City in search of a career, a purpose, an identity, shes

sweet, funny, cringe-inducing and heartbreaking. Noah Baum-

bachs film borrows affectionately from both 1970s Woody Allen

and the French New Wave while achieving a timelessness and a

    universality all its own.

    9. Short Term 12

This drama set in a foster-care center for at-risk teens could have

been painfully mawkish. Instead, it sneaks up on you with its un-

derstated honesty and unexpected dark humor. Writer-director

Destin Daniel Crettons film is brimming with originality, and it

provide a long-overdue leading role for the lovely Brie Larson as a

counselor who finds herself in flux.

    10. The Worlds End

This blisteringly profane send-up of sci-fi apocalypse extravagan-

zas provided the most fun I had at the movies all year. The third

genre tweak from director Edgar Wright and co-stars Simon Pegg

and Nick Frost is simultaneously their most ambitious and their

most effective. Their epic pub crawl is full of absurd humor and

rapid-fire dialogue but also has something to say about the danger-

    ous tug of nostalgia.

    HARLEM

    GLOBETROTTERSBY Mike Peterson

This month, the legendary and always fun Harlem

Globetrotters are coming to town and After5 was able to sit

down with Ant Atkinson, who hails from Wilson, North Car-

olina, 29 years old and already in the Harlem Globetrotters

    record book.

Heres an excerpt of Ants story from their site online:

At the first ever Globetrotters player draft, Ant didn't even

have time to finish his soda before he was handed a red-

white-and-blue jersey. He was the first pick, and it's easy to

see why. In the 2007 NCAA Division II championship, Ant

pulled off one of the most awesome comebacks in basketball

history. With 45 seconds left and his Barton College team

down 74-67, Ant turned the game around. He scored 10

points and sank a lay-up at the buzzer to win 77-75.

He also is in the Globetrotter record books with the greatest

individual scoring game in team history. On March 29,

2013, at Motorpoint Arena Cardiff in Cardiff, Wales, Ant set

Globetrotter records with an unbelievable 22 made 4-point-

ers - the Globetrotter innovation that is 35 feet away from the

basket 12 made 4-pointers in one quarter and 93 points in

    the game.

But all that is nothing. When the Globetrotters were on "The

Celebrity Apprentice," Ant stared down Donald Trump's hair

and lived to tell about it.

After5: What are the qualities that define a

    "Globetrotter"?

Ant Atkinson: You have to be a great basketball player, you

have to be a great entertainer and last but certainly not least

you have to be a great person!

A5: Harlem Globetrotters is known as a entertainment

brand that appeals to all ages, but also impacts alot of

lives in positive ways - are there any sort of things that

may have made your work more meaningful?

AA: There are a few things that make my job so special. For

example I love going to hospitals to put a smile on some-

ones face. I also love going into schools and talking about

our character education and anti-bullying programs. I loveperforming and watching the reaction of a kid or a grownup

turning back into a kid again! So pretty much everything

    about my job is meaningful.

A5: What are some of the kinds of skits or jokes that peo-

    ple really enjoy?

AA: The skits that people love to see when they come to a

show are the water bucket and the string ball. These have

been in our organization for years and are some of the fa-

vorites. Some others are the purse skit and the slow motion

    and rewind skits.

A5: Harlem Globetrotters has come a long way since it's

beginning. What are some of the more significant ways it

    has evolved?

AA: We have evolved in many ways. We are in more main-

stream media now, social media, TV shows and I think the

most important is a lot of us are now household names. In-

stead of it being one or two people that everyone talks about,

its our whole team, which is big for our brand.

A5: Do you ever pull elaborate jokes on each other like

the ones on the basketball court?

AA: We are a team full of pranksters and jokesters, so you

know we have our own little innocent fun when we are

    amongst ourselves.

A5: Is there an ultimate theme of Harlem Globetrotters

you make sure to get across to your audiences?

AA: Our ultimate theme that we want to get across to audi-

ences is memories that last a lifetime. Our goal every night is

to make sure our fans have a great time! Our show appeals to

every girl, boy, woman and man. Our game only last four

quarters but the memory that you take away from the game

    will last a lifetime!

A5: How big is the team and what's the average age? You

guys do over 300 games a year, right? Must be quite a life

to balance Globetrotter duties with family, etc.!

AA: We have about thirty players on our team, varying from

rookies to players that have been on the team well over a

decade. We play about 400 games a year annually world-

wide. I can be tough to balance life with your family. We are

on the road eight to nine months out of the year, and that

leaves little time for our family. You miss out on so much, es-

pecially with our kids. But in the end, my family is my moti-

vation as well. Im out here to provide a good life for them,

and that helps me to stay focused as we travel the world and

    thrill millions of fans!

A5: Anything else I may have missed?

AA: We have about thirty players on our team, varying from

rookies to players that have been on the team well over a

decade. We play about 400 games a year annually world-

wide. I can be tough to balance life with your family. We are

    JENNY MORRIS

    By Mike Peterson

Jenny Morris is a local jazz talent who follows the deep artistic

roots of her family. Outside of her regular job, she pursues many

artistic interests including jazz music and singing, writing, theater,

    and so much more.

In our community, there are many special people. Its our job at

After5 to find those people, and share their incredible stories and

passions with you. I hope you enjoy our conversation with Jenny

Morris as much as I did.

After5: How did you get into jazz music, particularly?

Jenny Morris: I grew up surrounded by my dads marvelous

record collection and the great standards hed play on the piano.

Its one of those things that started so early, so immediately, that it

would be impossible to express my initial joy from jazz, other

than my singing of it today.

A5: How did you come to develop a passion for music?

JM: Again, being surrounded by it from the first. Both sides of my

family are very musical. I think its simply in my DNA. We are

Welsh, after all! But, when I was born, my parents wasted no time

in getting me straight home and playing their Mendelssohn and

    Tchaikovsky records!

A5: What are your current projects and gigs?

JM: I like to keep myself busy, and Im definitely getting what I

asked for this year! I have been working closely with friends in

Detroit, MI on a very exciting television prospect called The D

Show. We are running a Kickstarter campaign for it and are hop-

ing to raise enough money to create the pilot episode! The idea of

the show is to provide a family-friendly variety show in the old

tradition of, say, Johnny Carson and Jack Parr.

I am also preparing for my own album of jazz standards, to be

recorded with Rob Haynes in Memphis, TN. This is something

weve both been trying to do for some time, now, and are finally

getting some footing under us. Ill be launching a fundraiser with

Indiegogo soon! We basically need enough to pay the musicians,

manufacture and distribute the album. (*You can find more info

about these two projects on her facebook page and website).

For fun, and rather as something of a stress-relief outlet, I am

also quite delighted to announce that I am forming an historical

dance society! I have been a dance teacher since the age of thir-

teen, and have always loved contredanse and historic dances that

filled the ballrooms of the late 18th century to the mid 19th cen-

tury and beyond to the animal dances of the early 20th century!

I feel like this would be a great thing for the area.

A5: Are there other projects you do other than music?

JM: Ive spoken some about the dance, which has always been an

important part of my life. I have taught dance and have choreo-

graphed several shows for musical theatre, reviews, concerts andeven one senior recital! But, I also love drawing. I am a member

of the Original Paper Doll Artists Guild and have had several of

my paper dolls published. I also enjoy writing. Were all writers in

the family. And, of course, acting! I have done many shows over

the years and have had the honor of working on some wonderful

    shows.

A5: What have been some of your favorite roles?

JM: I very much loved playing Gillian in Bell, Book and Candle,

directed by Nicole Quam. Gil was a modern day witch who had to

battle with the affliction of falling in love. Susie in Wait Until

Dark, directed by Ben Klipfel, was a tremendous challenge, but I

relished it. I was tutored at the School for the Blind in order to

better understand my character and for the physicality of the role.

Ben also directed me in The Bad Seed where I had to step in for

the leading actress and had one week to learn the part. I played

Christine Penmark, who discovers the awful truth about her homi-

cidal young daughter and her own past. In all of these shows, Ihave worked with amazing, talented people and each experience

    has been a wonderful gift.

A5: Who are your major influences in life and music?

JM: My mom. She's spunky! And one of the strongest people in

the world. My dad, Clyde Morris, was probably the biggest

influence, both in life and music. He grew up during the Great

Depression and I think his attitude towards life rubbed off a lot.

Hed had a dance band, at one time, and played all

those great songs from the time. Hes definitely

the reason for my complete adoration of jazz. As

far as other singers and such, Bobby Darin is, to

me, the best of the best. What

that man faced every day of

    his life, and knowing how

short it could be, he lived

each day to the max and filled

    every moment with the desire

to succeed. He also was themost talented of all the old

    crooners. He could sing,

    dance, act the whole pack-

    age. Other big influences for

    me, artistically, are Ella

    Fitzgerald, Anita ODay, Lena

    Horne, Mel Torme, Fred As-

taire, Doris Day and our own

    Peggy Lee, who was, of

    course, from North Dakota.

A5: What are your major dreams and aspirations in life?

JM: My dreams and aspirations are pretty lofty, I suppose some

might say. I want to be out there singing. Making albums and

maybe even inspiring people the way Ive been inspired. I want to

entertain. In truth, I cannot imagine myself doing anything else.

A5: How do you deal with adversity and naysayers?

JM: Well, I suppose Ive been pretty lucky in that I have had the

support and love of so many people, even perfect strangers, who

have such overwhelming confidence in me. Of course, there are

always going to be those who, for no apparent reason, do not wish

you well. All you can really do is ignore it. I realize I am not at all

mainstream, but you have to do your own thing. Whats the fun in

being just like everybody else? Embrace this life, and your talent,

keep improving and as my Aunt Melissa would say, sep it, and

    move on!

A5: Is the rest of your family musically-inclined as well?

JM: Very much, so! My father was a wonderful singer and pianist,

and he also played tympani with the Symphony. My mother plays

the harp, and performs in town (at Mamma Marias Haha,

shameless plug!), my brother is an accomplished musician and

composer, my sister is a singer/songwriter and my aunt Lucia

played violin with the Greater Grand Forks Symphony. My cousin

Rob has one of the most successful bands in Memphis and has

toured all over Europe with James Burton! My dads cousin

played with Jan Garber and my great-great uncle Harry Knicker-

    bocker played a Stradivarius.

A5: what kind of places have you played at?

JM: In town, I have performed at Sanders and for over a year at

Giuseppes, and several years for the First Night and Celebrate the

Night New Years Eve events, as well as the Urban Stampede and

Rhombus. Ive done shows all across Canada and the States, from

Nashville, Winnipeg, Chicago, Minneapolis and even a few placesId never heard of before!

A5: What is your outlook on life?

JM: Its an adventure! Ive had, and will probably continue to

have, some pretty rough times. But, as Dorothy Fields wrote,

Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and start all over again!

    Ask the

    Fitness

    Gal

    BY JAIMIE MIESEL

Question: Well, its that time of year

again. Any advice on sticking to my New

Years resolutions in 2014?Answer: To be honest with you, I dont really like the whole res-

olution approach at all. I just learned through a statistic shown by

Anytime Corporate that only 8% of people who set New Years

resolution goals actually keep them. Thats not a very good per-

centage. Its clear you want to make some changesthats what

resolutions are all aboutbut it sounds like its your mindset that

needs to change. You have to determine how committed you areto living a lifestyle of health. After all, it takes dedication and

hard work to exercise consistently, make healthy food choices

most of the time, and get adequate sleep each night. And these are

just some of the behaviors that define wellness. But heres the

thingwhen you decide that revamping your lifestyle is more im-

portant than reaching some short-term goal for 2014, New Years

resolutions will become a thing of the past!

Question: I keep hearing that CrossFit

workouts are unsafe. What should I be

aware of if I decide to try CrossFit?Answer: The possibility of injury is an increased risk with partici-

pation in any type of exercise, especially a high-intensity fitness

regimen like CrossFit. A CrossFit workout combines strength

training, explosive plyometrics, speed training, Olympic and

power-style weight lifting, kettlebell work, body weight exercises,

and endurance exercises. Training the CrossFit way requires you

to workout 3-5 times per week at a very intense pace. Most work-

outs are performed in a circuit style, moving from one exercise to

another with little to no rest. Its best to have a sufficient strength

base before starting CrossFit (they will modify as needed though).

If you are new to Olympic weight lifting and plyometric exer-

cises, dont worry as each CrossFit affiliate has a one-month initi-

ation course, which newcomers must complete to learn proper

training technique for all of the major exercises performed in the

CrossFit program (or, they SHOULD and you should participate

for best results). Ask about credentials and references for any af-

filiate coaches and personal trainers who will be responsible for

teaching you the essential CrossFit exercises.

Question: Id love to run a 5K with some

friends this spring, but I am not active at

all right now. How should I go abouttraining for something like this?Answer: This is a great question! There are actually several plans

on the internet that can take you from the couch to the 5K course

in as little as 8-10 weeks. In fact, you can even use one of these

plans if you have no intention of running a 5K, but simply want to

start incorporating fitness (running) into your lifestyle. Most of

the plans start with combination walk/jog/walk session, 3 days per

week, steadily increasing the actual jog time from just 2 or 3 min-

utes to about 10 minutes by weeks 4 or 5. At this point, you also

start to add an extra day of training, totaling 4 sessions each week.

As you continue to increase your jog time, you gradually remove

the walking warm-up, thereby finishing each workout with just a

basic walking cool-down. By the time you get to 10 weeks, you

should be able to run consistently for 25-30 minutes without stop-

ping. Not bad for a former couch potato, huh? Do a Google

search for couch-to-5K training programs, or check out www.hal-

higdon.com for more information. Good luck!

    PROTECTING YOUR SKIN THIS

    WINTERFAMILY FEATURES.COM

From non-friendly weather conditions to itch-inducing dyes found

in everyday products, your skin can be exposed to a variety of un-

expected irritants. But, protecting and maintaining healthy, com-

fortable skin can be easy with simple tips and products.

"With so many skin types out there, getting to know how yours

reacts to different factors - be it cold weather or harsh chemicals -

is important," says dermatologist Elizabeth Hale, M.D. "Take care

of skin with products that are skin-friendly, mild and hypoaller-

genic, to avoid discomfort. Just be sure to test out each on a small

area of skin before applying liberally."

Here are three more tips from Dr. Hale to keep your skin feeling

its best during the cold-weather months:

Stay hydrated: The key to protecting skin is to keep in check with

everyday habits, such as getting good nutrition, enough sleep and

plenty of water. Drinking at least 8 glasses of water every day is

necessary not only for your skin, but also for your body's overall

health. During the winter, try incorporating hot tea with lemon

into your recommended daily serving of water to keep warm

when you're outside, but still give your body the hydration it

    needs.

Check your laundry: During the frigid months, be sure to cover up

with hats, scarves, gloves and long-sleeves to avoid cracked, dryskin. Also, go for comfort by layering soft, lightweight fabrics

that aren't aggravating to the skin, like cotton. Keep your favorite

clothing clean and smelling fresh, without irritation to the skin, by

using a hypoallergenic laundry detergent. ARM & HAMMER(tm)

offers two skin-friendly versions - a classic perfume and dye free

option and Sensitive Skin Plus Scent Laundry Detergent, which

has been clinically tested to be gentle on skin. You can learn more

about skin-friendly laundry choices at www.armandhammer.com.

Apply sunscreen: From tailgating to hiking to skiing, make sure

you're still protecting your skin during outdoor cold-weather ac-

tivities. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, one

in five Americans will develop some form of skin cancer during

their lifetime, so it's important to apply sunscreen year-round,

even when it seems as though UV rays aren't as strong as they ac-

tually are. Aim to apply sunscreen liberally on all exposed skin

before you step out the door and reapply an SPF 15 or higher lo-

tion every two hours when outdoors for an extended period of

    time.

Irritated skin is no small matter and should be taken care of every

day. Using the right products and taking necessary precautions to

reduce the stinging, burning, itching and redness of sensitive skinwill keep it feeling comfortable during all the colder weather

months. Photo courtesy of Getty Images.

    COREY MOCK NAMED NEW EXECUTIVE

DIRECTOR OF G.F. YOUNG PROFESSIONALSby Stacey Dimmler

The time has come to pass the torch. The Greater Grand Forks Young Professionals are excited to welcome Corey Mock

    as the new Executive Director.

Although Corey has been involved with the organization for several years, it was at Launch Grand Forks when he wit-

nessed the passion displayed by GGFYP. The festive spirit that accompanied the overlooking view of downtown Grand

Forks was palpable, Mock recalled. City officials and business leaders joined members of GGFYP to kick off a new

chapter for our community. It was a time when professionals, both young and experienced alike, shared a focus on mak-

ing Grand Forks an accessible and attractive place to live, work, play, and grow. It was at this celebration where Grand

Forks offered its support of our mission to enhance the community, create connections, and invest in each other.

Corey has a strong background in working with nonprofits; most recently as the Executive Director of Third Street

Clinic. He brings with him a toolkit of valuable skills including management, fundraising, grant writing, community de-

velopment, and networking. The place where GGFYP is currently at, is right where Corey needs to be. Thus far, the

Board of Directors and members have all done a tremendous job with a number of various community initiatives. With

Coreys talents and experience we will continue to develop a strong future for the organization says Stacey Dimmler,

    current GGFYP Executive Director.

Corey grew up in Minot, ND. He has a BA in History and is working on completing his MA in Comunity and Urban De-

velopment from the University of North Dakota. Along with his wife Jeannie and 1-year-old puppy Macie, Corey resides

in Grand Forks. Jeannie is an environmental scientist and works as a Permitting Specialist for AE2S.

Corey will begin his role as Executive Director of GGFYP on January 6th.

Im proud to play a role in the success of GGFYP and support the programs we offer to members and neighbors, Mock

said. Every day is an opportunity to strengthen connections within the organization while expanding our impact within

the community. Im honored to make this the next focus of my career with the support and guidance of our Board of Di-

    rectors.

  • 8/13/2019 January 2014 After5

    14/16

Let me start by saying this title is misleading. I wanted the title to

pertain in some way to the opposite of a resolution, but I dont be-

lieve a good word exists for that. And neither did Google. Ive

found throughout my life it is much easier to not do things than to

do them. Go ahead, try it out. Or better yet, dont. So the theme

for this months article is going to be things we shouldnt do. In-

stead of deciding to go to the gym three days a week, lets all

agree to not see any wide-released movies in January of 2014. I

know this sounds harsh, but I have it on good authority (my own)

that January will be harsh times for the avid movie-goer. And thus,

    we begin.

Say this with me: I will not see The Legend of Hercules. Starring

mannequin Kellan Lutz, this tale of the mythical Greek hero offers

little new to the tale we all know and love. In two minutes oftrailer time, the star of the show was allowed six words and one

yell. Im actually frightened at the thought of him delivering lines

of dialogue. Imagine if someone combined the 300 and Gladiator

trailers and took out the good acting and youre stuck with The

Legend of Hercules trailer. Unless you scored under 15 on your

ACTs and your girlfriend is a Twilight fan I cant understand what

would seem appealing about this movie. Maybe its the star-stud-

ded cast, you say? Kellan Lutz was the only recognizable name

and its clear from the trailer he was selected for reasons other

than his ability to act, though I cant quite put my finger on the

perfectly sculpted reason that may be. Im actually amazed this

movie isnt premiering on the History Channel. Watch Disneys

Hercules instead. Its on Netflix! And there are songs. And Her-

    cules chin makes me smile.

I will not believe in a ninja, world saving, Frankenstein. You cant

fool me I, Frankenstein. Just because you put the word Franken-

stein in the title doesnt mean this movie has anything to do with

Frankenstein. I could have been persuaded, really I could have. I,Aaron Eckhart. That has a nice ring to it. Just a good lookin dude

with a few scratches and character flaws saving the world from

CGI gargoyles, and even I could get some mindless pleasure out

of that. And maybe Im just bitter that this movie appears to be

fronting as something its not. Mary Shelleys original book,

Frankenstein is a masterpiece. Its creepy, its enthralling, and the

fact it was published in 1818 still blows my mind. Instead of see-

ing I, Frankenstein, go out and read, or reread Shelleys original.

I promise I will not be seeing Ride Along. I dont think Ice Cube

has ever made a good movie, and I can only take so much of

Kevin Hart screaming at me, even though I do enjoy most of his

standup specials. Parts of this movie could be quite funny, but who

wants to sit through an hour and a half-plus to weed through the

funny parts? I suggest watching 9-minute YouTube video with

Conan OBrien, Ice Cube, and Kevin Hart sharing a Lyft Car

to get the steady laughs and brevity we all truly want.

And finally, I will not be seeing Jack Ryan: Shadow Re-

cruitalthough its tempting. This is the one on the list that I

hesitate to steer you away from. The story looks familiar, the

script seems just sub-par, BUT the acting might just be

enough to save it from disaster. On the other hand, it probably

wont. Kevin Costner, Chris Pine, Keira Knightley, I know I

know I KNOW people. How can you not go see this? Well Ill

tell you. Keira Knightley does NOT have a British accent! Shes

not wearing an Elizabethan era dress! If she isnt British and she

isnt wearing a dress like this is a period piece film then who is

she? Youve changed Keira. And I dont feel like I know you

anymore. Chris Pine, sure hell be fine. Id prefer if he was inspace, but I know he will be able to deliver some quick wit

while slugging some bad guys. As for Kevin Costner, the guy

has made a career off reminding us of our father. Except for in

Mr. Brooks. Unless your father is a murdering psychopath, in

which case I stand by my comment. So I will not be seeing Jack

Ryan: Shadow Recruit, but I wont be mad if you see itIll just

    be disappointed.

So make the right decisions as we bring in the New Year by mak-

ing no decisions at all. Because remember, all of the bad movies

you saw in 2013 are in the past now, but the movies you see this

January are going to stick with you for the entire year. And maybe

since youre skipping movies this month you can hit the gym like

youve always planned. Or, you know, not. Happy New Year all!

    MAGIC TRICK SECRETS

    OF CRISS ANGELArticleBase

Levitation is a big part of Criss Angel's repertoire. He has fasci-

nated crowds all over the globe by floating off the ground, seem-

ingly without any supporting device, special equipment or wires.

On his television show Mindfreak he once floated off the ground

about two feet and gently landed on a cement ledge to the amaze-

ment of spectators on a busy street.

So how is this done? How does Criss Angel levitate himself? It's

actually easier than you think. In a recent video Criss Angel shows

some of his friends how this is done.

This form of levitation involves standing in front of an prop, like a

metal box, chair, or stair case with your back to the audience. In

this demonstration Criss stands approximately one foot from the

prop, in this case a metal box.

He places his feet together (his shoes are magnetized). He stands

so he is in the center of the spectators. Now while talking to his

audience he uses misdirection with his right hand while his left

hand opens a panel on his pants that allows his right leg to come

    out.

This is the gimmick, the right shoe is attached to the pants so

when his leg is out of the shoe, the shoe will hang.

The critical point is removing the right leg from the slit in the

pants. Criss again misdirects. The importance being he doesn't

want spectators concentrating on his legs. This is the most difficult

part of the trick, actually getting the leg out and firmly planted on

the box. Engaging the spectators with speech and hand movements

allows Criss the split second needed to accomplish this.

Just before he rises from the ground Criss arches his back looking

up, extends his arms outwards and takes deep breaths. This wraps

the spectators in anticipation and allows Criss the time to balance

    himself.

He floats up. His arms outstreached, his eyes gazing upwards. His

legs remain straight, heels together, floating two feet off the

ground. "How does it look?", Criss asks the three or four friends

that have gathered. "Looks good.", someone answers.

Criss explains that from this point he can float to the top of the

box or float back down. If he floats to the top his foot is placed on

top of the right shoe. The exposed leg is then slipped back into the

    pants and shoe.

Criss would then end the act by turning to his spectators, observ-

ing their expressions and saying something like, "Do you be-

    lieve?"

    Well do you?
