President’s Message —by Steve Johnson

Happy New Year! Aren’t you glad 2013 is over? Each year in January, we can all start a new year with a clean slate and new resolutions. Did you resolve to play more golf or tennis next year? Then there’s always the treadmills at the Fitness Center. You can do it. On January 1 of each year we are all perfect. Let’s keep it going as long as we can.

How familiar are you with the process of inviting someone to join your Club? Did you know that it is

impossible for someone to simply walk in and join the Club? Every year our staff tells us stories of people walking in the Manager’s office with an open checkbook expecting to walk out as a Member. It doesn’t happen that way. Every new Member must have been invited to join by current Members. Sure, we have a Membership Director to help facilitate the process, but the Membership-By-Invitation process is never cut short. According to our bylaws, each new Member must have a Primary Sponsor and two Secondary Sponsors. The Primary Sponsor must have known the applicant socially for at least six months. The Secondary Sponsors must know the applicant socially, but no time limit. The Club offers to finance the initiation fee for new Members over 5 years. It can take two months or more for the process to join the Club. This causes problems every pool and tennis season as new Members are excited to use these facilities. So, a new Member wanting to use the pool all summer needs to apply for Membership in March. The minimum initiation fee downpayment is $3,125 for A Members, $1,500 for B Members and $2,000 for C Members. For new A Members 45 years old or younger, the figure is less- depending on age. You know someone who is now ready and waiting to be asked to join your Club. Maybe they weren’t ready last year and they’re ready now.

The Clubhouse is closed January 1 – 16. We reopen for lunch on Friday, January 17.

Who is waiting to be invited into Membership?

Clubhouse Only / From January 17 – 31

The Grill is open regular winter hours in January. We do not close the first two weeks. Come join us for breakfast and lunch each day, and dinner on Thursday and Friday nights.

General Manager’s Message —by Anthony Chelena

One of the very enjoyable benefits of working at the Club is getting to know so many of our Members’ families. Whether we watch your children grow here or when we see your grown children and their families visiting you, it’s a lot of fun for the Club staff. Sometimes we get to know your parents who you bring to your Club, sometimes it is a brother, sister, niece or nephew. Often times it’s grandchildren. Sometimes we don’t get to meet your families in person but we learn about them through your stories.

During the holiday season so many of you travel to see your families, and then you come to the Club and share the stories with us. This year I have been struck by how many of these stories we’ve heard. We enjoy it. Thank you for sharing your families with us.

Last spring I was watching the Masters Golf Tournament on TV when Tiger Woods hit his approach shot on #15 into the water. When he took his drop I said to my wife that Tiger dropped in the wrong spot. Although I thought the drop location was wrong, no one mentioned it, Tiger, his caddy, and the TV announcers didn’t notice. Maybe I was wrong? I found out later that I was right and Tiger was in big trouble! How did I know? Several years ago I attended a free, 2-hour Rules of Golf Workshop conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association. Well, at 5:30 PM on March 9, 2014, Hendersonville Country Club will host the Carolinas Golf Association for a free 2 hour Rules of Golf Workshop. You are invited. Do you know the difference in your options for dropping out of a red or yellow hazard? Apparently Tiger Woods doesn’t, but at the end of this class you will. Juniors are encouraged to attend and guests are welcome. We will invite all the area high school golf teams. Look for registration instructions in the February Score.

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are starting to catch on and I’m seeing them around the Club. An e-cigarette is an electronic (non-tobacco) device, shaped to look like a cigarette, which allows the user to inhale a vapor with a user-selected additive… often nicotine. I’ve seen many articles lately arguing if e-cigarette use should or should not be allowed in areas designated as non-smoking. For instance, a recent article in USAToday reported that airports are very inconsistent on where e-cigarettes are allowed. For now at Hendersonville Country Club, we consider an e-cigarette the same as a traditional cigarette and should not be used inside the Clubhouses. If there is a policy change- you’ll see it here.

In 2005 Grill Manager Harry Barnjum and I were lamenting the escalating wholesale cost of food, so we created a virtual basket of our most commonly used foods to track their cost over time. In 2005 our virtual basket of coffee, ground beef, ketchup, milk and bread, etc. cost $276.16. Today that same basket costs us $380.45, a 40% increase. Speaking of family, am I starting to sound like my grandfather who used to tell me stories about how much he could buy with a nickel? My grandfather was a great man but he sure did tell a lot of stories about the cost of things. Now I’m telling the same stories. I guess the more things change the more they stay the same.

Thank you for participating at your Club. I hope 2014 is a great year for you and for your family.

Mardi Gras Night February 23Mardi Gras (French for “Fat Tuesday”) is the day before Ash Wednesday, and is also called “Shrove Tuesday” or “Pancake Day”. It is the final day of Carnival. It is a celebration that is held just before the beginning of the Christian liturgical season of Lent.

We hope you and your family had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!!

Thanks to all who contributed to the employees Christmas fund. The employees at the Club work very hard to make your club experience the best it can be.

How many times do you still write the wrong year before you finally catch yourself? It’s hard to believe we are into

2014. How about those New Year’s resolutions? How many did you make? I made several resolutions for 2014. The most important one is to keep improving the standards in the Clubhouse. This includes more training of the staff. They will be given written and practical tests each week. The kitchen and dining room staff will view the Club Managers of America sanitation tapes and will be tested and retested every three months.

Be sure to keep those resolutions. Happy New Year!

Thanks GENE AND STAFF

I want to assure you that your participation in the employee annual holiday fund was very much appreciated. There are a lot of happy faces when these checks are distributed. We sincerely thank you. I hope it shows in our service to you! You have probably noticed that a familiar face at the grill during breakfast and lunch has been missing for quite some time. Thelma Treadway (a 16-year employee) broke a bone in her foot and hopefully

she will return to work in mid January. I know she is eager to return and is probably going stir crazy. We miss her!

Blackeyed peas and collard greens around the start of the new year is a southern tradition. There are a variety of explanations for the symbolism of peas and greens, most commonly associated with good luck and monetary gain. That’s where the greens come in (green being the color of US currency). Peas for pennies, greens for dollars, and cornbread for gold. The pork seems to be there for flavor as opposed to symbolism. I read all this on the internet so it has to be true, right? We look forward to serving you, Harry and Staff Harry & Staff

PARLOR GAMESAT THE CLUBHOUSE

BUNCO NIGHTJanuary 22 / 7:00 Wine and Cheese / $6.00++ Ladies, come out and join us in a game of Bunco. It’s a fast paced game the ladies love to play. Here is an overview of the game.

Bunco is a game of dice, played in rounds. Players take turns rolling the dice and trying to accumulate as many points as possible to win each round. The game is played at tables of four in competing teams of two. Players score points by rolling dice and trying to match the number they’re supposed to roll for that round. They get a point for each die that rolls the number, and if all three roll the number they score 21 points. They also score 5 points for rolling three of a kind of any other number. They get to keep rolling as long as they score one or more points with each roll. Once they fail to score they pass the dice to their left and the opposing team gets a chance to score.

During each round the teams at the Head Table try to score 21 points. The first team to score 21 points wins the round and play stops. At all other tables play stops when the Head Table play stops and the team with the highest score at each lower table wins the round.

At the end of the round players change seats, the winners at each of the lower tables move up a table, and the losers at the head table move to the lowest table. Players also switch partners at the end of the round, so you never play with the same partner twice in a row.

During play, players track the number of rounds they win and lose as a team, and the number of Buncos scored individually, on their personal scorecard. At the end of the night wins/losses and Buncos are tallied and prizes awarded.

MAH JONGG MAVENS We will play Mah Jongg in the ladies locker room on January 8 and 15 and the Main Clubhouse on January 22 and 29. Please call Judy Petersen for more information.

BINGO NIGHTJanuary 21 / Bring your family and friends for a night of good food and a game or two of chance. Try your luck at Bingo, held in the Dogwood room of the Clubhouse the first and third Tuesday night. There are 3 sets of 4 games for a total of 12 games played. Try as many times as you would like- only $1 per card. A pot of gold is up for grabs during the last set, in which the pot starts at $50 with $10 added each game night until someone wins the Jackpot. Also during the last set a coverall is played with the winner winning $40. Dinner begins at 5:00 p.m. with bingo beginning at 7:30. So come early, as seating is limited.

Now that the holiday season is over and we are counting the pounds we put on over the past five or six weeks, it’s time to turn our attention to getting into shape for golf in the spring! The best way to do this is not to randomly exercise, but rather to employ the best specific exercises.

Stretching has been proven to produce great results for golf fitness. As we get older we lose the ability to make a full shoulder turning motion, which in turn causes a loss in distance and a creeping up of the handicap. If you would like more information on some effective stretching exercises please give me a call or come by the golf shop.

The golf staff would like to thank the Members for your support over the past year. We had the good year in merchandise sales and with your continued support we can make 2014 even better. Please remember that the Club gives you a 20% discount on all merchandise. This allows us to sell quality

merchandise at a fair and reasonable price. We encourage you to compare our prices on clubs and golf balls before shopping elsewhere. Don’t forget your gift certificates must be used by April 30, 2014.

We also would like to thank our Members for their generous gifts to the employee Christmas fund. You have enabled us to give our families a much bigger and better Christmas. Happy New Year to all!

Just a few years ago, Hendersonville Country Club was extremely fortunate to have Craig DeJong join our staff as Golf Course Superintendent. The course condition, aesthetics and playability have all improved by leaps and bounds and I’m sure each will continue to move in a positive direction. I hope each of you will join me in saying thank you to Craig and his staff for caring and doing such an outstanding job.

Please check out the 2014 Tournament Schedule and mark your calendar for the upcoming events you plan to play in.

The SMGA’s annual meeting in December was presided over by Bill Orr, our President. It was under Bill’s guidance that SMGA activities and events for 2013 were planned and conducted. Bill’s always prepared for our periodic Board meetings and sent out a detailed agenda in advance, outlining all the particulars of SMGA events so the Board could efficiently use its time. While the rest of us only had to show up and give our opinion, Bill had already thought about the issues and provided a framework from which to work. In doing so, Bill stressed to the Board to keep the SMGA membership in mind. So, while you saw announcements and articles from other Board members throughout the year, you should be aware of Bill’s contributions, which may have been behind the scenes, but were nonetheless vital. He was the Board’s informal mentor and our successful year in 2013 is largely the result of his diligent attention. When you get the opportunity, let him know you appreciated his efforts.

Dick Kauffold was named SMGA’s Golfer of the Year for 2013. In addition to his regular participation in SMGA events, Dick also served on the Club’s Handicap Committee, a USGA requirement. For those of you who suffer from insomnia, you might want to re-read his articles from older issues of the Score on handicap calculations. (Just kidding.) A factor just as important as those contributions is Dick’s demonstration of good sportsmanship on the course. Whether playing as your partner or opponent, all would agree Dick is a gracious player.

In a not so hotly contested election, the SMGA chose three new Board members for three-year terms. Three Board members found their terms expire and despite desperate attempts to amend the By-Laws, the libertarian-leaning Board insisted on imposing the prescribed term limits. The dearly departed are Gil Sydell, formerly our Secretary, the erstwhile Dick Huskes, Social Chairman (and formerly your Score columnist), and the aforementioned Bill Orr.

So, that leaves us with the announcement of the Officers for the upcoming year. They are: Al Schaeffer, President; Dave Lambert, Tournament Chairman and Vice President; Rich Robbins, Assistant Tournament Chairman; Larry Doebler, Secretary; Jud Etherton, Treasurer; Fred Huscher, Social Chairman; and Dick DuRose, Publicity. We are putting out this information while the Club is closed in order to forestall any attempts at a recall.

—by Jay King Golf Tips New Years Resolution: A promise you make yourself to start doing something good or to stop doing something bad.

It’s that time of the year again. Time to take a step back to re-evaluate your life goals over the past year and plan new goals/resolutions for this new year.

Below are some golf related resolutions you may consider.

1. Promise to practice with a purpose. Rather than rapid fire driving range work, try to concentrate on each shot. Practice the swing you worked on during your lesson. Aim at different targets and switch clubs after every few shots.

2. Try Yoga. Yoga is excellent for golf. With work you will increase your flexibility and strengthen your core.

3. Play by the Rules. Stop using mulligans and playing winter rules all year long. These can influence your handicap by over 3 strokes alone. If you play gimmies, your handicap could be lowered by an additional 3 strokes. There is a reason your scores are higher when you have to play the ball as it lies and putt everything out.

4. *Introduce a junior to golf. With our Family Golf program, junior clinics, and our upcoming PGA Junior League, there are many opportunities for our youth to participate and learn to play golf. Be the driving force behind them and encourage a junior to play golf. *This is my favorite. My grandfather introduced me to golf when I was 11. Since that time I have always loved the game, and was fortunate to make a career out of it!

5. Take a putting lesson. You would like to lower your handicap and shoot better scores… right? But when was your last putting lesson?

6. Develop a pre-shot routine. A consistent pre-shot routine will keep you relaxed, and focused on the next shot.

7. Play from the correct set of tees. Enjoy golf this year by playing from a distance that you can enjoy. The handicap system is set up where you can compete from different tees. Play a round of golf from a shorter tee box (that you haven’t tried) this year.

Happy New Year! See you on the course this year!

Happy New Year! Winter weather is settling in. When we experience wintry weather our staff, along with Clubhouse Maintenance, is responsible for snow and ice removal. Our first goal is to get our staff to the Club safely to begin the process. We follow an “order of importance” list as we move throughout the property, focusing on areas where Members may arrive first. Once our job is completed we’ll continue to monitor ice accumulation daily, insuring Member safety as they visit the Club.

As the New Year starts it is always good to look back at the past year. We were blessed with a very successful year on the golf course. Numerous projects were completed and our staff did an outstanding job of maintaining the golf course. I am very thankful to our staff and their commitment to providing outstanding playing conditions. I am also thankful for all the Members at the Club and their support and gratitude for recognizing the job that we do.

WGA-18 Hole —by Sandy Sessoms

Winter golf is in full stride! Time should be freed up after the holidays, so come and join us if you can. All of the information is on the HWGA web site with access information on page #1 of our Women’s directory.

Now that we are in a new year dues need to be paid. You should have received a mailing with complete details for our WGA as well as Western Carolina Women’s Golf Association. WGA dues are $70 and should be sent to Sally Boyd. WCWGA dues are $25 and should be mailed to Lillian Warren by February 1.

WHO DO YOU KNOW who is waiting to be invited into Membership? This is our ongoing theme as we prepare for the 2014 season. We are hoping that 2014 will be a roaring success, so please continue to bring your friends to the Club throughout the winter and introduce them to your fellow Members so

they can feel welcome here. As always, please send me any leads that I can help convert into new Members.
