The acclaimed ensemble is back, along with returning guest star Academy Award–winner Shirley MacLaine and new guest star Paul Giamatti, who will play Cora’s maverick, playboy brother, Harold, in the season finale. If you tuned in last season, you know that Matthew Crawley — heir to Downton Abbey, husband to
Lady Mary and brand-new father to a baby boy and successor — lies dead on a country road next to his overturned roadster. On top of this, the family is still grieving over the death in childbirth of Sybil, Mary’s youngest sister, who also left a baby behind. Season 4 opens six months later. Although it’s the 1920s, Britain still observes mourning rituals that are

Masterpiece Classic’s “Downton Abbey, Season 4” kicks off with a two-hour premiere. Sunday, January 5, at 9pm on KQED 9.
almost Victorian in their solemnity. Nonetheless, the Crawleys are beginning to snap out of it: Robert, Lord Grantham, must manage the estate without his canny son-in-law; Cora suddenly faces a staffing crisis; Violet, who has seen enough tragedy, knows how to recoup quickly; Isobel, Matthew’s mother, may never recover; Edith, who was jilted at the altar, tempts scandal with a new
beau; and Mary now finds herself to be the most desirable widow in Yorkshire. The servants also pick up, buck up and get on with it — with new arrivals, departures, rivalries and betrayals among the downstairs staff. Life goes on at Downton Abbey.
Downton Abbey Is Here
The Game Is On!
Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman return as Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson in three new episodes of the contemporary reinvention of the Arthur Conan Doyle classic, written and created by Steven Moffat (Dr. Who) and Mark Gatiss (Game of Thrones).
The first of three new Sherlock mysteries premieres Sunday, January 19, at 10pm on KQED 9.

Three new reasons to tune in to the fourth season of Downton Abbey: (l. to r.) Tom Cullen as Lord Gillingham, an old family friend of the Crawleys; Julian Ovenden as aristocrat Charles Blake; and Gary Carr as jazz singer Jack Ross.

Told in Stephen Hawking’s own words and with unique access to his home and public life, Hawking is a personal journey through the superstar scientist’s world. Join him at home, under the care of his nursing team; in Silicon Valley as he wows a packed theater audience and meets a team of technicians who hope to speed up his communication system; and as he throws a party for family and friends. Hawking also carefully recounts Hawking’s life journey, from boyhood under-achiever to Ph.D. genius, and from healthy cox on the Oxford rowing team to diagnosis of motor neuron disease, given just two years to live — yet surviving several close brushes with death.
Hawking premieres Wednesday, January 29, at 10pm on KQED 9.

co-hosting “How Tech Has Changed Philanthropy.” Marketplace Morning Report host David Brancaccio and KQED’s Scott Shafer will lead a panel discussion with Craig Newmark, founder of craigslist and craigconnects, Matt Mullenweg of Wordpress, Jocelyn Wyatt, executive director and co-lead of IDEO.org, and Jolkona co-founders Nadia and Adnan Mahmud about the work of socially responsible organizations that have spearheaded game-changing developments in medicine, education, the environment and sustainability.

Skate with Curious George in San Jose
Go Back to School Experience the epic film about UC Berkeley. The latest work of legendary documentarian Frederick Wiseman, At Berkeley is a revealing four-hour film about the University of California at Berkeley. Eschewing narration and standard interviews, the doc takes viewers from faculty meetings to classrooms, from financial aid seminars to research laboratories to show the myriad aspects of university life.
For almost three decades, American Public Media’s Marketplace has provided its nearly 10 million weekly radio listeners with reports covering the dynamic world of business and commerce from domestic and international perspectives. Familiar personalities like hosts Kai Ryssdal and David Brancaccio have explored hot-button affairs ranging from America’s high-speed rail systems to Egypt’s post-revolutionary economy. As part of the show’s 25th anniversary elebration, Marketplace and KQED are
Tuesday, January 28, at 7pm at the Nourse Theater in San Francisco.
KQED is proud to sponsor Hawaiian Airlines/ Kristi Yamaguchi Downtown Ice, now open until January 12. It’s fun for the whole family in the heart of downtown San Jose. Tickets range from $13 to $17. Skating hours vary. Don’t miss Curious George at the ice rink on Saturday, January 11, from noon to 4pm.

“I spent 12 weeks at Berkeley [in the fall 2010 semester] and shot 250 hours of material,” explains Wiseman. “No events are staged and there is no artificial lighting. The editing of the film took 14 months spread out over a two-and-a-half-year period . . . A public university is a complex organism made up of many parts — students, faculty, administrators, staff, police, alumni, politicians and the community in which it is located. In the editing I had to try and find a way to suggest these interrelationships and their complexity while simultaneously giving a sense of the entire institution.”
Independent Lens “At Berkeley” premieres Monday, January 13, at 10pm on KQED 9.
“ I can’t think of another film portait of higher education that matches this one for comprehensiveness, intellectual depth and hope.” — David Denby, The New Yorker
How Tech Has Changed Philanthropy KQED and Marketplace lead the discussion.
