Dear Members,
As I write, we are already through half of January and 2014is off to a fast pace.
Our Board met on January 11, 2014 and reviewed and actedon quite a few issues which can have an effect on all of us in thecoming years. The primary topics discussed related to 2014legislation, the Spring 2014 OFDA district meetings, the April14-16 OFDA convention in Norman, probable 2014 OFDADisaster training and the 2014 OFDA/NFDA membership drive.
Regarding the 2014 Ok. Legislative session which begins inearly February, it is believed that the Funeral Board SunsetReview, Re-Creation will be a major focus on all. The OFDABoard has approved support of this Re-creation and hope youwill use any opportunity to relay thoughts of support with yourlegislators. Additionally, there have been over 2400 bills filedwhich we will be reviewing in future days and weeks.
We are also focusing on the Spring district meetings to startaround February 11 to update you with legislative and otherrecent topics, and to attend a C.E. program.
The 2014 convention information will be included in futureissues of this magazine and in mailings to you.
For those of you who recently signed up for disaster trainingwe appreciate you and hope to provide formal training in theSummer 2014.
In closing, we appreciate your 2014 membership and askthose of you who have not joined to help us meet membershipdeadlines which are approaching.
As always, please feel free to contact any of your electedofficers, governors or chairmen listed in the front of thismagazine or the OFDA office.
Yours truly,
Thomas L. Burkhart, CFSPPresident

2014 Requires New OSHA Compliance Steps and aReminder of Ongoing Compliance Requirements
New Compliance Issues
OFDA has recently been working to notify all members about the first major change inworkplace safety regulations since the early to mid-80’s.• Have all employees who work around chemicals been apprised of the new standard and
signed off on training about the 22 new areas which the new Hazard CommunicationProgram requires?
• Is your firm prepared to begin using a new Safety Data sheet binder as the new forms arefurnished in chemical shipments? (Chemical companies must begin using the new SDSlabel system with pictographs by December 2, 2015 but may begin using this new systemat any time.) Has your chemical supplier notified you of upcoming changes?
• OSHA has interpreted that you should consistently ask your supplier about any newsharps item which can include gloves. This conversation should be documented by date, the person you spoke to and the information you were given. If safer items are available, your employees should be allowed to use them, and critique them for future use of whetherthey are problematic. This information should also be documented in an OSHA file in theevent of an official inspection.
• While OFDA has addressed these new requirements at recent District meetings and in themagazine, please contact our office if you need help in implementing these new procedures.
Ongoing OSHA Compliance requirements needing employee notificationand signed employee acknowledgement of training
• Is Annual OSHA Training for employees mandated and documented?• Have employees been thoroughly apprised of the written Exposure and Communication
Control Plan?• Are Free Hepatitis B vaccinations offered and documented?• Are blood borne pathogen and formaldehyde training meetings held, acknowledged by
employees and have newly hired employees been trained?• Do charged fire extinguishers, first-aid kits and appropriate signage exist regarding
flammables? Has your fire department inspected the premises?• Have body or casket lifts been tagged, inspected and is “no passenger” and appropriate
signage in place?• Is the use of universal precautions mandatory for all employees? Is this in writing?• Is the use of full body personal protective equipment mandatory for all employees? Is this
in writing?• Does prep room signage meet the Haz. Comm. Standard?• Is the prep room inaccessible to the public?• Is there a working quick drench shower and eye wash station in place?• Has the prep room ventilation been tested at least every 3 years and every time a new
embalmer is hired and does it meet OSHA standards?• Are only non-porous positioning blocks used in the prep room?• Is a maintenance schedule for the prep room and removal vehicles in place? Have autos
been inspected for fire and safety issues?
