New Year, New You…

“True life is lived, when tiny changes occur.” Leo Tolstoy

A lot of people begin the New Year by making resolutions. We’ve all been there. We take a vow to lose weight, exercise more or spend more time with our family. We start the year with great intentions, but then we quickly relapse into old habits. Big changes do not require big leaps. Permanent change is more likely to happen gradually than through one big restrictive plan. Allow yourself to climb the ladder one rung at a time!!! Here are some ways you can make your intentions a reality this year:

1. Write down your intentions and keep them in a visible place.

2. Get to the source of whatever is keeping you in a rut.

3. Be clear about what your life would look like once you achieve your goal.

4. Share your resolutions with friends and family.

5. Reward yourself with every little accomplishment.

Happy New Year!! Dena, Nutritionist

Easy Tips to stay FIT

How much is enough? ACSM guidelines recommend to exercise for at least 30 minutes, 5x week, plus full body strength training 2x week. Shoot for 10k steps a day. Start by adding 500 steps a day until you reach your goal. What if I don't have the time? Get Intense! Working at about an 8 on a scale of 1 to 10, will help you burn more calories and get the most out of your workouts. I can’t stay motivated. Find a friend! Having a workout partner will help hold you accountable, help push your farther, and help you work out longer! I have a bad back, knee, etc. Go for a swim! Swimming is a low impact workout that can actually help recovery from injuries and slow the process of aging. I don’t like going to the gym. These five, strength building exercises don’t require any equipment. Only your body! Perform each exercise and then repeat for a TOTAL body workout.

Dave Fitness Coordinator

Squat (15 to 20 reps) Lunge (15 reps per side) Push-up (10 to 15 reps) Bridge (15 to 20 reps)

Plank pose (hold 30 to 60 seconds)

Wash the sweet potatoes and bake them whole, in their skins, at 375 degrees until tender, about 40 minutes. Wash and chop cilantro leaves. When sweet potatoes are done, slit open the skin and place on serving plate. Season with salt and dots of butter or a sprinkle of oil, if you like, then squeeze fresh lime juice all over, and shower with cilantro leaves.

the Visionary January 2014

As 2013 closes out and we ring in 2014, let’s take a minute in gratitude for what we have. Let us give thanks for another year of life. It is common practice in the New Year for people to start making resolutions. These resolutions tend to focus on doing more, having more, or being more. This focus assumes that we are lacking something. How about we pause and take stock of what we have: A roof over our heads, a community of like-minded people to visit with during the day, food to eat, Recovery Classes to attend…

Imagine if each day in the New Year, we stopped to think of what we have instead of what we want. The exercise of writing a gratitude list each day has helped many folks in their journey of recovery. Challenge yourself to write down three to five things each day that you are thankful for. Watch how your whole attitude begins to change. Soon you will notice things throughout the day that you want to add to your list. You will be in a consciousness of wealth instead of lack.

The beginning of 2014 we will be hosting a Peer Support Specialist Training class and we are looking forward to a large class. This class is made up of peers who want to further their recovery and support others who are discovering their own recovery journey. The peers who graduate from class and complete a forty hours internship will become certified Peer Support Specialists and are eligible to receive a Certificate.

I will also be facilitating a WRAP Workshop that will be available for our Members in the near future. Please keep an eye open for the announcement as to when it will begin.

I look forward to the many classes and trainings Vision of Hope will be offering to its Members, Employees and the Community. –
