2015 starts off with the prestigious Crocker-Kingsley Competition. 75 pieces were selected among the 1500 that were entered, and awarding 6 top cash award winners. Juror, Gregory Kondos also has some of his work on limited display-see his newest pieces when you visit.

Congratulations to the Hallberg recipients from Sierra College. The 4 selected artists have work available for viewing in the Eli & Edythe Broad Gallery through February 7th. As expected, the work is truly amazing and these students have a successful start to their careers in art.

Each year, Blue Line Arts reviews all the programs and membership benefits to ensure we are serving you and the community with the best possible programming and services. This year, we’ll be adding new youth programming that includes the California State University of Sacramento (CSUS) Creative Digital Lab. Children will be learning how to create their own movies and animated video books on the latest software and technology offered by Apple.

Page 3: January 2015

If you have young children who love computing and movies, this is the program for them!

We’ll also continue to feature the incredible work of our member artists this summer, who will be published in the annual exhibition for members and shown throughout the gallery. As well, we’ll offer more professionalism workshops and seminars along with the Susan Cooley-Gilliom Artist in Residence and Teaching program through the Placer Community Foundation. This year, visiting clay artist Sergei Isupov will join us and offer more challenging workshops for those who are interested in learning a new contemporary style.

If you haven’t enjoyed an intimate night of rich music, the music series premieres on January 30 with jazz harpist Motoshi Kosako and guitarist Akio Sasajima. These two performers will thrill and surprise you.

Join me for another year of art.

JANUARY 2014

We started off the year with a full line up of five sensational and diverse music performances scheduled, to delight a variety of appeals.

As our newest program, we give thanks to our music committee led by Val V. Music. Not to mention the video and photography support of Lang Lew. Click here to look back at the music in 2014.

MARCH 2014

FEBRUARY 2014

2014 was also the most successful annual High School Competition to date! With over 100 pieces entered, the impacted exhibit took WestPark Workshop Gallery. It was a sight to see with over eight schools from in the region.

The galleries took on a cartoon feel that particularly thrilled the several youth tours scheduled to visit during the Monte Wolverton and Robert Armstrong exhibit. Creativity was flowing with thoughts circulating into the far reaches of random. It’s no wonder with such memorable moments, that this exhibit was a year favorite. Click here for a clip on our instagram.

APRIL 2014

April seems to be turning into ceramics center in the community. Blue Line Arts hosted the Susan Cooley-Gilliom Artist in Residence and Teaching Program featuring world class and expert in clay, Tip Toland. Thanks to the Placer Community Foundation and their continued support. Every visitor to the gallery during the residency period received a special experience watching a masterful artist at work. In addition to the residency

America’s ClayFest II came again, youth spring break camp went around the world, and the “Lottery for the Arts” event moved from fall to spring. Special thanks to all of our contributing artists and The Art League of Lincoln for making April “Clay Month”.

A style all it’s own, with a little madness, stood out in the Coker Family Gallery in the Mid-Century Madness exhibit. With the support of community lenders, exhibition curator Tony Natsoulas was able to stage a unique combination of contemporary art (inspired by the time period) and vintage furniture pieces. The marshmallow sofa was a favorite among many. Click here for Sacramento Bee Correspondent Victoria Dalkey exhibit review.

The 6th was a history making event with the Big Day of Giving(#BIGDOG) effort. Across three counties, over 3 million dollars were raised in support of 350+ nonprofit organizations. Thanks to you, our generous donors a total of $10,340 was raised in support of ‘creating a vibrant community through the arts.’

JULY 2014

Artist, Farrell Scott highlighted our summer youth education programming through a dynamic photography workshop. This intrepid group of explorers ventured out into the scorching heat to capture a little magic on camera. With various other programs during summer, the moments caught on camera by students expanded so much more!

A YEAR IN PICTURES

This year’s annual membership exhibit had a memorable element that was not present in past shows; a dedication. Specifically, in memory of Ellene Ashcraft who was a prolific artist, and artist member. Norm Ashcraft, warmed our hearts during 3rd Saturday with a reflective story of Ellene’s full life.

AUGUST 2014

SEPTEMBER 2014 The Professional Artist Workshop Series was a great success this year. Teacher, Michelle Andres, delighted every artist in attendance with an extensive knowledge. The wide range of subjects, from marketing to gallery relationships, were presented in an approachable and concise way. “Michelle gave me all the tools I need to move forward with a plan for marketing my new business,” says Rona Getty about the ‘Marketing and Self-Promotion for Artists’ workshop.

We can not thank the Ashcraft family enough for sponsoring the Membership Medley exhibition and making the show that much more special. Astonishingly, there was a record breaking number of participants in this exhibit! It was wonderful to see so many artists from the region and beyond represented.

Congratulations goes out once more to the top prize winners selected 1st place: Colleen Sidey Yerian, 2nd place: Margaryta Chaplinska, and 3rd place: Leah Florence.

OCTOBER 2014

“Real Food, Real Art, Real Music” gained traction and popularity quickly; guests attended as a sold our event! Big names like cookbook author; Joanne Neft, Real Food Catering, Paige Anderson and the Fearless Kin, Popie Wines and Monk’s Cellar supported the event. No wonder the fundraiser was a smash hit. Everyone is clamoring for a repeat in 2015. Be on the look out and the first in the know.

NOVEMBER 2014

DECEMBER 2014

In the spring, artist Marianne Bland, showcased ‘Vestiges’ generously sponsored by Emily Leff.

Anticipating the same success ‘White Noise’ by Debra Oliva arrived. Oliva was awarded Best In Show at the 2013 Ceramacom competition. As top award winner the prize included a solo exhibition in 2014. This Michigan native exhibited 25 of the most perfected and detailed ceramic works. As a great triumph nearly all of her work sold. Expect more solo shows to continue in 2015.

Another popular theme that is developing and growing is our 30 x 30 exhibition. Artists in the region were challenged to create thirty works in thirty days for the second year. This year’s presentation includes a wide variety of mediums from oil paintings and photography to fiber expressions. Click here for a video of the exhibition.

2014 was a good year of growth for Blue Line Arts, and bittersweet as we pondered the loss of former board member, Steve Pease... We move forward, however, and we have continued to grow and improve our programming as well as our geographic reach. We have put in place multiple organizational systems, updated our by-laws, and the music program has been very successful, showcasing a wide variety of talented musicians. We look forward to more of these events in the months ahead.

Our core programs and events, such as “Lottery for the Arts,” continue

to improve and attract more artists and new members.

“Real Food, Real Art, Real Music” was a great success as this annual event continues to evolve. Once again, we are proud to be able to host America’s ClayFest II with partner The Art League of Lincoln.

We are honored to have been the host gallery for the annual Susan Cooley-Gilliom Artist in Residency and Teaching program the past few years and we hope to be able to continue bringing renowned artists for the artist in our region.

NOTES FROM DAVE COOK PAST PRESIDENT

So much of what we are able to accomplish at Blue Line Arts is due to the hard efforts of our CEO, staff, and to many volunteers. I especially want to thank Tony Natsoulas for all he does to bring the high quality artists and shows to Blue Line Arts.

Please check out our monthly E-zine, and if you aren’t yet a member, consider joining, enjoy the benefits of membership, and help support this wonderful non-profit arts organization.

Cheers,

Who is your favorite artist and why? One favorite is Richard Diebenkorn, because of his compositions, colors, and painting style.

How did you get your start? In 8th grade, I had a wonderful art teacher who helped me discover my abilities to draw and paint.

What are you most proud of? My children, my marriage, and what I’ve been able to accomplish in art these last few years.

What has been your biggest challenge as an artist? Returning to art, after teaching my children at home, to pursue a lifelong passion to be a painter.

What do you see happening in the next 5 years? To continue developing my skills as a painter and exhibit my work at the Alex Bult Gallery.

What is a hidden talent of yours? Often times before I begin painting each day, I like to play the guitar.
