Compassion Awards. The Care and Compassion Aw
recognize those in the Labette County communityLCMHS staff members who routinely go above and
yond to show care and compassion to others.
Nominees can be anyone in the Labette County c
munity, including employees of LCMHS, who have g
above and beyond to show care and compassion to others, LCMHS Execu
Director Matthew Atteberry said. This person does not necessarily have t
someone who volunteers for a lot of different things, but someone who is extr
dinarily caring and routinely demonstrates compassion towards others.
Community members and LCMHS staff may submit entries. All entries mhave the name of the person being nominated, an address and if possible a ph
number. It is also helpful to include the name and phone number for the pe
who is submitting the nomination. A detailed description of why the person is
ing nominated must also be included. For more details on submitting an entry

The foundation enables us to grow and expand the hope and help we are

Active Parenting of Teens Course Being Held at LCMHS
Labette Center will be holding an Active Parenting of Teens course from February 2nd through
March 9th in the Centers community room. This course will last from 6pm 8pm. Dinner will
be provided for all of those who attend. The course is provided FREE to the community. Inter-
ested individuals should contact Labette Center at 620-421-3770 or 800-303-3770 and ask for
Renee Roberts or Virginia Standley.
Active Parenting of Teens is designed to serve all parents of teens and preteens from about fth
grade up. The program is designed to serve an ethnically diverse population of families, as well as a wide range o
ily structures from single parenting, blended families and intact families. Active Parenting of Teens addresses wo
with families that have signicant teen problems such as drug use, those with everyday challenges such as disresp
behavior, and can be used in special populations such as those with ADHD, parents who have been ordered by c
take parent education, parents in correctional institutions, parents of hospitalized teens and many others.
The Active Parenting Teens program is an interactive approached program designed for small groups of 10 to 2
ticipants at a time. Groups meet for six 2 hour sessions on a weekly basis. Parents received a comprehensive
for parenting teens and preteens. As a model program it contains information and skills for parents including:
Understanding of parenting styles andthe role of Active Parenting
Understanding and application of re-
cent brain research on teen development
Emphasis on character development as
a means of equipping teens to survive and thrive
Parenting skills necessary for develop-
ing qualities of courage, cooperation, respect,
responsibility and self-esteem and at the same
time how to handle behavioral problems.
Explanation of how to apply the model
for the goal of prevention in the areas of sub-
stance use, sexuality, and violence

Celebrating 35 Years of Serving Labette County
Mental Health First Aid CourseApril 7th 2014
Labette Center for Mental Health Services will be holding a Youth Mental Health FAid course on Tuesday April 7th, 2015 from 8:00 am to 5:30 pm. The course will be at Labette Centers main facility located at 1730 Belmont Parsons KS in the multi-pose room. Participants must register prior to the course. Cost of registration is $5
which includes materials, lunch and snacks.
According to the Mental Health First Aid website, this program is intended for a varof audiences: friends and family of individuals with mental illness or addiction, key fessionals (such as police ofcers, human resource directors and primary care workeschool and college leadership, faith communities, or anyone interested in learning mabout mental illness and addiction. The training venues will also vary as Mental HeFirst Aid program sites reach out to Chambers of Commerce, professional associatihospitals, nursing homes, Rotary Clubs, parent organizations, social clubs and ogroups who make up the fabric of a community. The core program is tailored for respoto the general adult population. Youth Mental Health First Aid specically focuses onways individuals who work with youth age 12-25 can help in these situations.
