Piedmont Club Reinvents the Business Club Experience By Brian WatkinsThe Piedmont Club has been a popular staple in the Triad for building relationships, high end dining, and socializing with friends. This is truer than ever as we get into 2015, with the club having made some exciting changes for members to reinvent the club experience going forward.Parent company Club Corp is a leader in club management, with over 200 clubs worldwide. This year Club Corp invested in a beautiful series of renovations to modernize the club and better serve its members. As a business hub in the Triad area, modernizing the amenities and private rooms is a useful touch for professionals of all kinds stopping by throughout their day. The private touchdown rooms are all equipped with TVs and video conferencing capabilities — perfect for meetings, presentations, and connecting with other members. These rooms can also be useful for gatherings and personal events; the club has even held weddings in the larger rooms. The Piedmont Club is proud to welcome a new executive chef, James Gallina. Gallina began his career as a graduate of the Pennsylvania Institute of Culinary Arts, going on to earn Certificates of Completion from Le Cordon Bleu Paris, Ritz Escoffier, and LaVarenne of Paris. Chef Gallina has some menu changes planned for 2015, so stay tuned for these exciting new offerings. Will Lloyd has also joined the club as the new Service Director. Born in Durham, Lloyd graduated from Tulane University with a Bachelor’s degree in psychology in 2002, going on to work at a variety of high end restaurants. In 2009 he received a

certification in the Court of Master Sommeliers. This dedication to superior dining service is the perfect complement to a new chef, and the Piedmont Club looks forward to an even better 2015.For those thinking of becoming members, the club’s new ONE Membership offers a variety of benefits that include:• Sky High Sips socials,

wine tastings and dinners, and golf league membership• Regular business seminars and guest speakers• Complimentary birthday dessert and champagne• Weekday breakfast and lunch at Chef’s Table for members• Access to any other 200 club locations worldwideThe club has always been about fostering relationships, and in adding 350 members this last year has created a new energy that blends the professional with social elements. Breaking bread together is a chance to go beyond traditional networking and build strong partnerships in the community. Some of the events coming up in 2015 at the club include the Business Forum kickoff, featuring educational networking and a Thursday morning referral group. Guest speakers will also give ongoing presentations during both breakfast and evening programs. Another big one to look out for is the popular Conversations in Leadership

Design Archives Vintage & Handmade Emporium recently opened their second location in downtown Winston-Salem. At first glance you might think of it as a brick and mortar Etsy shop. Upon further exploration you realize that it is a small business retail incubator too. It’s a place where 80 small local businesses can test or expand their market. While these small business owners create unique items and gifts such as jewelry, pottery, art, cards, tee shirts and more, the shop keepers sell their products. Design Archives opened in 2001 as a vintage store, selling clothing and home items, and to this day the vintage aspect of the business continues to thrive with 15 vendors who sell their vintage finds in their boutique (CONT. on Page 17)

booths. Thus the tag line “There is no other store just like this in the world” , is a true assessment of what you find inside the doors at 636 W Fourth St. as well as their flagship store at 342 S Elm St in downtown Greensboro. Owner Kit Rodenbough has found that the successful formula for her stores is to position them inside of interesting large older buildings, beside of local breweries…which just happens to be where she finds the most foot traffic. Out of town visitors as well as locals are always stopping in to see what is new, since the inventory changes on a daily basis. Design Archives is open 7 days a week.

Think Local Buy Local Be Local

Elliott’s Custom SawmillKen Elliott never thought that a college assignment to design his own logo would ever come in so handy. Now, he uses the same logo he designed over 30 years ago for his independent, locally owned custom sawmill business. Elliott began his career in construction, which involved clearing many acres of woodland to make way for highways and developments. They often burned or hauled the cleared wood to the dump, which Elliott thought was a waste of a good resource.

Elliott decided to be as resourceful as possible when fixing up his 100-year-old farm, where his family raised Black Angus cattle in Winston-Salem. In 2001, Elliott purchased a Wood-Mizer sawmill to make lumber for various fence and barn projects around his farm. Word quickly spread through the county that he had a mobile sawmill and thus Elliott’s Custom Sawmill was born. Elliott strives to respect trees that have been growing for decades by harvesting or scavenging them to create lumber for building or craft. When cut properly, the wood can last for more decades to come.

Elliott enjoys seeing how and where his work ends up. While waiting to be seated at Spice Cantina, a new restaurant located at the Railyard in Greensboro, Elliott recognized the wood used to build a bench as well as two end tables. Elliott confirmed with Spice owner Jim Budd that the furniture was built from lumber that Elliott’s Custom Sawmill provided. Elliott’s Custom Sawmill has provided lumber for furniture, homes, breweries and much more. Elliott even works with his customers to recycle the waste on the job. The mobility of his sawmill allows Elliott to eliminate haul costs and the ability to complete jobs on location. Check out the Elliott’s Custom Sawmill website here for more information about services and prices. Keep it local for your next lumber project.http://elliottsawmill.com/
