The RUNDOWN - January 2016President’s CornerHello Striders:

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!! Regardless of which holiday you celebrate, my hope is that you and your family and friends have a very happy and safe holiday season. It has truly been an honor to serve as the President of the Tidewater Striders this year – a club that stands out as one of the biggest and best in the country. As I reflect on this past year, a number of significant events and accomplishments come to mind.

Weather played a part in the rescheduling of the last of our 3 Distance Series races, which we completed on March 1, but once again the Strider Distance Series was a big success and played a key role as a training series for many athletes doing the Shamrock Half and Full Marathon. Our annual banquet was equally successful as we took time to honor all of our award winners as well as Hall of Fame inductees; we even had a Virginia Pilot reporter on hand who wrote an article about our highly successful youth program as well as covering our High School Cross Country award winners. May saw the return of the Breezy Point Triathlon, which returned in grand style! A big thanks to all of the volunteers that made it happen and I’m glad to report that Breezy Point will be taking place again in 2016.

Our club was a sponsor in the Walk Norfolk Week, an event held to motivate people to become engaged in exercise, recognizing that more than a third of Hampton Roads adults are overweight. The Striders also partnered with the Bon Secours Medical Group and Bon Secours in Motion to put on a runner’s symposium to discuss running performance and injury. Of course, our Summer Series at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens was immensely popular as always and culminated with the Memorial 5K race which, along with the Turkey Trot 10K, raise the money for scholarships that allow the Striders to award more than $20,000 to deserving high school seniors and those in college. Thanks go to Bee and Goody for assembling such a huge array of raffle prizes!

A new Strider race hit the racing scene with the Strider Summer 10 miler, held in August at the Great Dismal Swamp Trail – a big thanks to Dan Edwards and the Race Committee for adding this race to our schedule. Thanks also to Dan Neuland for hosting the popular Strider picnic at his house once again. We held our Volunteer Party and general membership meeting in Oct. at the Ocean View Fishing Pier and enjoyed great food, beverages, comradery and entertained nominations for your 2016 Board of Directors. Congratulations to all of those re-elected and to Marie Price and Drew Midland, our two newest Board members – your Board works hard all year and it is a pleasure to work with these dedicated men and women.

Lastly, I’m extremely pleased with the quarterly meetings that have taken place this past year between the three clubs in the Hampton Roads area – Colonial Road Runners, Peninsula Track Club and the Tidewater Striders. We have accomplished quite a bit, the most noteworthy being the creation of the Hampton Roads Super Grand Prix – a huge thanks to our own Tom Randolph for surfacing this great idea. In short, several races were selected by each club and participants will need to compete in at least 5 races (minimum of one from each club), with scoring done at the end of the year to determine overall, master and age group awards.

So, as you prepare for the new year, don’t forget about our other new race, the Resolution 5K on Jan. 1, 2016, again thanks to Dan and the Race Committee, and the Distance Series which commences on Jan. 9, 2016, followed by the second race on Jan. 30, 2016 at Historic Ft. Monroe in Hampton and concludes on Feb. 20, 2016. Sorry for the long column, but we all have a lot to celebrate! Please remember our men and women who are serving in the Armed Forces to keep our great nation safe.

Steve Shapiro

Editor NotesHappy New Year! 2015 won’t be a year that I will forget, I’m looking forward to a new year filled with new adventures and good health for all.

If you are in town, New Year’s Day brings multiple opportunities for starting off the year with a run or two with many of your fellow Striders. The Striders are producing the inagural Resolution 5K at Mount Trashmore, register before the end of the year for $25. In the afternoon head to the Norfolk Botanical Garden to run thru the holiday lights and set a PR at the Garden 2.016 Run through the Lights.

The deadline for the February 2016 Rundown is January 20th.

See ya at the races,Ada Lester, [email protected]

Tidewater Striders Race ScheduleJanuary 2016 1AM Resolution 5K

The Striders have added a new race to the sched-ule. The 5K is at Mount Trashmore but there is a new pos-trace party venue; party at the Fleet Reserve Association adjacent to Mount Trashmore. Prizes go to the best formal wear and cutest pajamas.

1 PM Garden 2.016 Run through the Lights Start the year off with a PR at a new distance. This

light filled event is the only opportunity to run through the Holiday lights at Norfolk Botanical Garden. Come enjoy the lights at your pace.

9 Distance Series 6 Mile & 10 Mile Dismal Swamp Canal Trail - The first event of the

Distance Series is the first event of the Tidewater Striders Grand Prix. Additionally the 10 Miler is the inaugural event of the inaugural Hampton Roads Super Grand Prix Post-race party is at Big Woody’s on Battlefield Blvd.

30 Distance Series 10 Mile & 15 Mile NEW VENUE - Fort Monroe. The races will consist

of 5 mile loops around the fort’s waterfront. Fort Monroe is extremely easy to get to and on a Saturday morning in January the tunnel is generally a clean shot. For runners from the bay side of the beach, this is closer than many beach venues. This is a great addition to the Distance Se-ries. Postrace party is at the Paradise Ocean Club on Fort Monroe.

The RUNDOWN - January 2016A Word from the Vice President...“Life is like riding a bicycle. You don’t fall off unless you stop peddling.” --- Claude PepperThank-you, everyone, for participating in the recent Board elections. I appreciate being chosen again and look forward to continuing my work with the Striders! Serving on the Board the past two years exposed me to the extensive inner workings of the club. I am constantly awed by the generosity of those who give their valuable time for the club and I encourage all members to get involved. The club encompasses running, walking, youth running and multi-sport and has 24 committees; there is always room for enthusiastic people to step up and help out! I can personally testify that the Striders are a club where you get through giving!

***

It is the time of year when we all need to step back and reflect on our accomplishments, then look ahead and set goals for 2016! Goals can be set in many areas. In the realm of fitness I suggest using the Grand Prix schedules as the basis of your training. First, get a 12 month 2016 calendar. Decide on some “A” races and put them on the calendar. Next, take the Grand Prix plan that fits your needs: youth, walking, running, multi-sport or the new SUPER GRAND PRIX, then plug events into your calendar that support training for your “A” races.

The Tidewater Strider Distance Series was developed to help people train for the Shamrock Marathon. Use the Grand Prix schedules in the same way to train for all your “A” races. Using the Grand Prix races will give you structure, provide social events during your training, and, because these are club events, they offer you well managed events with club level pricing.

***

This year we will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Breezy Point Triathlon! Many local triathletes got their start in the sport at Breezy Point; I was one who did. Multi-sport offers swimmers, cyclists and runners new avenues of training and many exciting venues in which to race. Breezy Point is one of the few triathlons that offers several types of team entries: military, men, women or mixed (men and women) teams. This is a great opportunity for all those who have considered triathlon but may not be ready to do all three disciplines. If you want to be matched up with others to form a team send me an e-mail at [email protected] and tell me which parts of the race you want to do. I will try to match people up into teams so everyone who wants to participate can.

The 2015 Yeah Buddy Half-MarathonBy Steve DurrantThe 2015 Yeah Buddy Half-Marathon (YBHM) was held at the Williams Farm Community Park which is adjacent to the Williams Farm Recreation Center located on Newtown Road in the Bayside area of Virginia Beach. This has been the venue for the event since 2012 when the inaugural YBHM was held. The Park’s approximate 1.1 mile hard surface circular path is an ideal venue for the half –marathon event. It is one of the races in the Strider’s annual Walking Grand Prix Race Series. Approximately twelve loops around the park’s circular path results in completion of the half-marathon distance of 13.1 miles.

There is no entry fee to participate in the event. Most participants are walkers, but occasional runners have participated in past events. Participants may make a contribution to the American Cancer Society where all funds received for the event are sent.

Buddy Levitin was race director, and Bernard Kong, husband of Strider walker Heather Simpson Kong, was his “main man” at the Start/Finish Line. Bernard insured each individual participant’s lap times were accurately recorded as they completed each of the twelve laps.

Revisiting a Recordby Jordan “Buddy” LevitinWith a week to go before the end of the year, a list of record holders in the 24 Hour Ultra Run/Walk for Cancer was received from race director, George Nelson, who is well-known among Tidewater Striders. The name of Tidewater Strider runner, Steve Speirs, stood out among the list of twenty-nine record holders, which includes 26 runners and 3 walkers. The list was forwarded to all walkers on file by Paula Graham, to which I appended the following note.To new Striders who may not recognize the name, Steve Speirs established a record in Men’s Age Group 45-49 by running 133.25 miles in this year’s 24 Hour Ultra Run/Walk for Cancer at Sandy Bottom Nature Park in Hampton, VA. Steve is Tidewater Striders Web Master. ‘Why is Steve’s record noteworthy,” you ask? To long distance runners, 133.25 miles in 24 hours may not be a big deal. But it was on April 25/26, 2015.The event began at 7:30 a.m on April 25. Showers had been predicted for late afternoon. Instead, the rain began shortly after 1:00 p.m., kept up all afternoon and continued through the night and into the early morning finish next day. To make matters worse, the temperature dropped as the day and night wore on. As many of you know, a nature trail is not the ideal venue for long distance events. Sandy Bottom was no exception. Dodging mud puddles and tree roots are challenging enough during daylight hours. At 5:30 in the afternoon, with sunset approaching, under-footing had become treacherous. By 7:30 p.m. Paula Graham called it a day and departed. She was the last Strider walker to leave the course.”Mr. Speirs continued running.

An effort has been underway by the Membership chair to validate lifetime memberships (currently at 83). A notice was sent to all with over 50 responses received to date. Primary purpose of this validation is for accurate reporting to the RRCA (Road Runners Club of America) at the end of November. As a side note, there was a gain of 102 Striders to the various Grand Prix’s thru the revised Strider membership form initiated several months ago.

For Weight-Sensitive Runners: Food for ThoughtWhile many athletes yearn to be leaner and lighter, some athletes have to be leaner and lighter. As a runner, your sport does not have weight classes (as does wrestling, light-weight rowing), but the sport is sensitive to weight. Hence, you may put pressure on yourself to achieve a weight that might defy your genetic physique. Some runners can achieve the desired lightness healthfully; others struggle with poor energy, lethargy, and depressed mood.

It’s no secret that disordered eating practices are common among weight-conscious athletes. An estimated 30% to 60% of active women and up to 19% of active men struggle with finding the right balance of food and body-fatness (1). Their quest to be light easily leads to restrictive food intake, over-exercising, and too little fuel to support normal body functions. In women, strict diets trigger amenorrhea —loss of regular menstrual periods. While some women seem content to get rid of that monthly hassle, they lack knowledge that amenorrhea leads to weaker bones, higher risk of stress fractures (today) and early osteoporosis (in the future). It’s hard to be a life-long runner when your skeleton won’t support your goals.

While the combination of amenorrhea, disordered eating, and stress fractures has been dubbed The Female Athlete Triad, today’s sports medicine professionals acknowledge that weight-conscious men also experience medical issues. For example, a study of competitive male cyclists suggests as many as 25% had osteopenia (the early stags of osteoporosis) and 9% had full-blown osteoporosis (low bone density). The exact cause of the poor bone health is yet to be determined (2).

Up to 94% of elite athletes who participate in weight-sensitive sports report dieting and using extreme weight control measures to achieve their desired weight (1). They commonly experience dizzy spells, needless fatigue, headaches, constipation, and poor sleep. Symptoms of long-term under-eating include hair loss, dangerously low heart rate (<40 beats per minute), electrolyte imbalance, constipation, anemia, stress fractures, mood swings, social withdrawal, insomnia, and inability to concentrate well—to say nothing of poor performance. After all, you can only compete at your best if you can train at your best. You can only train at your best if you are doing a good job of fueling up before training and refueling well afterwards.

Long-term food restriction easily leads to medical complications that involve not just bones but also the whole body: intestines, heart, hormones, reproductive system, kidneys and brain. It creates psychological stress and depression. Hence, runners who need to make weight should take the job seriously—not simply resort to starvation diets when the weight creeps up.

So what’s a weight-conscious runner to do?

The best time to lose weight is during the off-season. But runners, being human, often procrastinate until the last minute before a race to complete this task. Here are tips to help you make weight healthfully:

• Avoid losing more than 2% of your body weight via pre-event dehydration. That’s a loss of three pounds of sweat for a 150-pound runner.

• Find a health professional who can monitor your body fat. If you are a man, do not drop below 5% body fat. Women shouldn’t drop below 12% fat.

• Do not eat less than your resting metabolic rate (RMR), the energy needed for your heart, organs and brain to function. You can roughly estimate your RMR by multiplying your body weight times 10 calories per pound. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, you need about 1,500 calories to simply breathe and be alive. That’s the equivalent of three 500-calorie meals.

• Add at least 50% more calories than that for daily activities and training. To take the guess-work out of calculating your personal calorie budget and creating an effective food plan, you want to partner with a sports nutritionist who is a registered dietitian (RD). To find your local sports RD, use the referral network at SCANdpg.org.

• More simply (but less personalized), knock off 300 to 600 calories from your typical (non-dieting) day’s intake. Deleting two beers (300 calories) and four Oreos (200 calories) could be an easy start to weight loss.

• To minimize loss of muscle, try to consume 20 to 30 grams of protein every 3 to 4 hours during the active part of your day. That means, 3 eggs for breakfast, 2 (6-oz) tubs of Greek yogurt mid-morning, a can of tuna for lunch, 1 cup cottage cheese mid-afternoon, and a chicken breast for dinner. The portion actually depends on your body size. The target is about 0.7 to 1 g protein per pound of body weight (1.5 to 2.0 g Pro/kg) when you are cutting calories and are in energy deficit.

• Include carbohydrate to fuel your muscles. Target at least 1.5 g carb per pound of body weight (3 g carb/kg). For a 150-pound runner, that means at least 225 grams of carbs (900 calories), preferably more. Divided into meals and snacks, that’s 60 g carb/meal and 30 g each for a morning and mid-afternoon snack. Translated into food, this means enjoy oatmeal with the eggs, banana with the cottage cheese, and rice with the chicken, etc.

• Include a little fat in each meal to add satiety and keep you feeling fed. You also need fat to absorb vitamins A, D, E and K. Choose nutrient-dense fats, such as avocado, peanut butter, almonds, and salmon.

• Surround your workout with fuel. That is, eat part or all of your breakfast before you train, so that you have the energy to exercise meaningfully. Include both carbs (to fuel the workout) and protein (to minimize muscle breakdown). This could be yogurt and a granola bar before you workout, and eggs with toast afterwards.

• Plan to eat recovery foods soon after you run. To avoid extra calories, simply back your training into a meal. That is, if you run from 4:00 to 5:00 in the afternoon, eat dinner right way at 5:30 (as opposed to having recovery food and then dinner at 7:00).

Dieting gone awry…

Despite the demands of your sport, try to keep your life in balance. Your whole identity should not be based on being a runner, but rather on being a person who runs and has other interests. After all, if you identify yourself as a marathoner, who will you be if you get badly injured and cannot run?

If you wonder if you have crossed the line and have an eating disorder, take this SCOFF quiz:

--Do you make yourself Sick because you feel uncomfortably full?

--Do you worry you have lost Control over how much you eat?

--Have you recently lost Over 14 pounds in a 3-month period?

--Do you believe yourself to be Fat when others say you are too thin?

--Would you say that Food dominates your life?

If you answer yes to two of the five questions, seek help from a sports dietitian.

The bottom line: You will not be able to be a great runner unless you take care of your body and fuel it appropriately. Here’s to healthful weight management!

Strider age group winners include Steve Sheppard, Daniel Hurley, Joe Polinski, MacKenzie Westfall, & Linda Long.

Complete results are available at TidewaterStriders.com

Not the normal attire for an Ultra but it sure worked for third place finisher, Steve Dungan

To the right is Mark Allen with a thumbs up for the photographer. Mark went on to finish in 5:33:08.

Seashore Nature Trail 50KDecember 19, 2015 - Virginia Beach, VA

Ultra Finishers: 244 Race Summary & Highlights: It really does take a village to put on this Ultra. Almost a hundred volunteers work this event providing unbelievable support to all the runners from start to finish. Without all these dedicated volunteers, runners would not be coming from 13 different states plus DC. Virginia residents make up the majority of runners, they are from all over the state with over 40 cities/towns represented in the list of finishers.

Former New Energy runner, Danny Tepovich was the top finisher of the day in 3:27:30, just less than a minute slower than his winning time from 2010. Eric Makovsky was second in 3:42:27; he was followed by Steve Dungan of Richmond in 3:44:16. The top master Steve Speirs was close to him in 3:44:45. Tom sub-master was Michael Wolfe of Williamstown, NJ. The top senior runner was Vincent Ortiz in 4:02:01. The top 29 & under runner was Erick Kuhlmann of Staunton, VA in 3:53:03.

Amy Ostrofe of Suffolk was the top woman runner in 3:50:33, the 5th fastest time of the day. Caitlin Starhota of Kill Devil Hills and Lindsay Mock of Frederickburg, VA were second and third women respectively. Winning the Sub-Master category was Strider Krista Booth in 4:22:34. The top master woman was Grandison Burnside of Henrico in 4:33:00. Strider Susan Sheets was the top Senior runner in 5:02:55. The top 29 & under runner was Stephanie Rice of Norfolk, VA in 4:40:14.

Eleven runners have completed all seven of the Seashore Nature Trail events. That includes the following Striders: Steve Speirs, James Booth, John Price, Michelle Smith-Harden, and Mary Spear.

A special congratulations and thank you goes to Stacin Martin who manages this event for the Striders. The volunteers are organized by Rosemary Plum.

Striders on the Road by Steve Scudder If you’ve been racing on the road, please let Steve know for running events. E-mail your name, race name, location, date and your results to [email protected] for running events If the full results are available online, please provide that link so that other Striders might be identified. This is a great opportunity to let Striders know about other events out of the area. When sending in your results, please consider including a little write-up about your experience. If you’re a new or recently renewed Strider and we omitted you in the“Striders on the Road,” it’s probably due to the membership data Steve had available this month.

It’s my second year running this low key 10 miler around Langley Air Force Base. In 2014, it was freezing and this year, we wore shorts. The miles just fly by as you get a great tour of Langley Air Force Base. I’m not sure which aircraft we passed but there was quite a display of Air Force Jets. It’s a small race with about 100 runners total. Packet pickup is inside the Shellbank Fitness Center. Included with the entry fee of $40.00 was a towel, water bottle, medal and this year a really cool shirt. The events are open to nonmilitary but you do have to register a week or two before the event. I’ll try to remember to get the flyer posted on the Strider’s website.

new energy app

PLAN TO JOIN the Tidewater Striders' New Energy Youth 2015 Running Team New Energy is an informal youth group training together to improve their times in road races as well as their performance in track and field and cross-country events sanctioned by the USA Track and Field (USATF) and AAU. Motivations vary from those who simply enjoy running, to those who are goal oriented and recognize the need to train in order to perform well in races. With its group approach to running practices, New Energy provides a fun, sociable forum for running preparation and development.

New Energy welcomes all youth runners, ages 6-16, regardless of ability. Practices are informal, and participants are encouraged to attend as many as possible. Runners must have a good pair of running shoes to avoid injuries. Uniforms, Warm ups and other gear can be purchased, but are optional. Membership in the Tidewater Striders is required by the third practice in order to participate in sessions and compete on a team basis in Track and Relay teams. The cost is $12.00 per year or $18.00 for two years. The Team participates in road races held in the Tidewater area, which are part of the Youth Grand Prix 1-mile and 5K series and are sponsored by local organizations such as school PTAs. Check race flyers for specific information by visiting www.tidewaterstriders.com . A New Energy Team race schedule will be part of the program and can be found under ‘Youth Programs’ on our Web Site.

Coaching is provided by volunteers who are Tidewater Striders members. Again this year, Angelo Celesia will provide leadership for training. Other running enthusiasts/parents will also assist.

New Energy provides youth runners and their families an enriching environment which can be a building block to the youth runners' future. In the past, New Energy runners attended National Cross Country and Track and Field Championships around the Country. Many previous New Energy runners are currently participating with high school and college teams where they have excelled in Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field with All State and National recognition. New Energy has produced numerous All-American medalists, State Champs and one National Champion in Cross Country.
