FRA PRESIDENTEN: Godt Nytt år !!I want to say thanks to our Children’s Jultrefest organizers, Cindy, Darlene and Crystal along with our own Santa did a fine job at the children’s party. It was very obvious that all the kids had a great time. Thanks also to Monica and Larry for their logistical assistance. Our Christmas dinner at the Irish Coffee Pub was attended by seventeen members and we enjoyed a nice meal together. Many thanks to Nancy Russo for doing the coordinating and arranging, I just wished there were more of us there to celebrate.
I plan to discuss the thought of a quarterly dinner get-to-gether for our members at a local restaurant. Renee will organize a pre-established cost dinner wherever we would like to go. Please be prepared to discuss and sign up if you’re interested at our January meeting. Now that it’s 2016 the Executive Board is currently preparing the Business and Social calendar plus the budget for the year. Upon completion, hopefully by the January meeting, it will be on the agenda for us to discuss and approve. 2016 should be a year of events and activities. Of course it’s convention year and will be getting more information from the Third District on what is planned. If you want to be a delegate, be ready to make it known when we are picking our two delegates. We only will be sending two this year because we have gone below one hundred members. Asbjørn has mentioned this before and he will give us an update at the next meeting. Our next Zone One meeting is scheduled for February but I’ve been told that Lillehammer Lodge in NYC has voted to disband. It’s also no secret that Peconic lodge in Aquebogue is hurting for members and of course officers and may be doing the same, more official details to follow when available. The message here is we need members yes, but we also need leaders for our lodges and most importantly participation by the members in the events and activities that are planned. Our next meeting is Friday January 15th at 6:30 PM. We are planning a special mini program reminiscing with
one of our senior members. You’ll have to attend the January meeting to learn who and to participate in the memories of years past. Let’s hope and work towards making 2016 a great year for all of us and the lodge.

ZONE HAPPENINGS
Vice President’s Message I wish you all an "Gledlig Jul" which is the proper way, in Norway, to say it after Christmas Eve, before that day it is "God Jul". This will last until the 13th day Christmas, until that day it is peace, no hunting and minimum of Entertainment. A few years ago I arrived in Stockholm Sweden on the 2nd of January and there no a taxis at Arlanda Airport, I could not get into the City Center. I had to call a friend to pick me up. Enough about that, let us look ahead. Our Lodge has now just 87 members, we are dwindling fast. The Lodge and the Zone are making arrangements, but not getting sufficient support. I do realize that for young families today, there are pressures all over the place, schools, sports activities, guarding children (which we did not really have to do) and carting them around nearly every day of the week. However, there is a group of parents whose children are out of the nest. Question, how do we get them in interested in Sons of Norway? We do have some of them for which we all should appreciate, we need them and they carry their load. If you have any recommendation, please see me.
Asbjørn

KULTUR MED TERJE
Hei og godt nytt År alle sammen☺ . What do Norwegians do in December? The same as you folks; prepare for Christmas. Houses are going through Christmas cleaning (walls, windows, ceilings), Christmas decorations are put out, people are doing Christmas shopping, things are happening at schools due to Christmas and so on. More and more Norwegian houses look like American houses at Christmas because of outdoor Christmas decorations. Suddenly Christmas Eve shows up, the big day. In Norway Santa shows up on Christmas Eve in the evening. Christmas is vacation for us, 25th of Dec and 26th of Dec are holidays— off from work. A lot of winter sports are shown on TV in December; that is an another December task— to watch all the sports. Not to brag, but Norway dominates many of the sports (Biathlon, Skijumping, Cross country skiing, Alpine skiing). Also in December was the 22nd IHF Women`s Handball World Cup. This is not handball as you now it: Handball (also known as team handball, Olympic handball, European team handball, European handball, or Borden ball) is a team sport in which two teams of seven players each (six outfield players and a goalkeeper) pass a ball using their hands with the aim of throwing it into the goal of the other team. A standard match consists of two periods of 30 minutes, and the team that scores more goals wins. Modern handball is played on a court 40 by 20 meters (131 by 66 ft), with a goal in the center of each end. The goals are surrounded by a 6-meter zone where only the defending goalkeeper is allowed; goals must be scored by throwing the ball from outside the zone or while "jumping" into it. The sport is usually played indoors, but outdoor variants exist in the forms of field handball and Czech handball (which were more common in the past) and beach handball (also called sandball). The game is quite fast and includes body contact, as the defenders try to stop the attackers from approaching the goal. Goals are scored quite frequently; teams typically score between 20 and 35 goals each. And who became World Champions? NORWAY. We are proud of you girls☺ Norway beat the Netherlands in the final on Dec 20th 31 to 23. “GRATITUDE. JOY. TOGETHERNESS. THE HEART Our meetings are more empowering than they seem. But you can’t write it down as a figure on a piece of paper. You have to feel it.” (Excerpted from Lodge Brooklyn November 2015 President’s letter; see the box below for the rest of the excerpt)
We have a convention this year in Myrtle Beach. I hope that we can make it the best attended convention in years. We have a lot of business to discuss but just as important we will have some fun. We will experience the joy of togetherness with old and new friends.
Our gratitude of being part of a great organization thrives. Why – because each and every one of us, puts our heart into what we do as a member of Sons of Norway and it shows. It shows in your lodge newsletters. It shows
in your faces at your lodge programs. It shows in how members are always willing to lend a helping hand.
The delegates your lodge elects can shape the future of our organization. Our District Board members will be elected from the delegates. I have great expectations for our District Nominating Committee; I know we will have a great slate of prospective Board members. I encourage each and every one of you to think about District level Board involvement, either as a Board member or perhaps a member of a Board Committee. When the Nominating Committee calls, don’t hold back. Let them know what role you would like to play in shaping the future of our District. You are so important to the ongoing success of the District.
Quite simply, the direction of this great 3D Viking ship of ours depends on you. Pick up an oar and get on Board!!! Feel the power of the force of the 3D.
Have a happy and healthy New Year!
Jeg ønsker dere alt godt
Mary
