Hello all!! I want to say that our Christmas meeting was a fun time for

me as well as our attendees. We played games, told stories and generally had a

great time. If you weren’t there you should have been.

At the December Board meeting we elected a new and somewhat used

Executive Committee and Board. I will once again be honored to be your Presi-

dent. The remainder of the Executive Committee is as follows: Dawn Howey-

Vice-President; Jamie Harrelson-Secretary; John Kammerer-Treasurer. Michael

Gillette is stepping down as Vice-President. He did a great job and the Board is

very appreciative of his contributions to our association.

Our new Board is as follows: Doug Allen, Pam Caldwell, Jerry Cowan,

James Critz, Michael Gillette, Tom Grose, Michael Hague, Jamie Harrelson,

Dawn Howey, Mitch Huntley, John Kammerer, Andy Richardson, Mitsi

Schwertner, Craig Shoe and Donna (DJ) Watt. I want to congratulate each per-

son for their election to our Board and look forward to working with you in the

year to come.

We have an opening for a committee chair person. The committee is our

Membership Committee. Michael Hague has served as head of that committee

for the past several years and has asked to be relieved of this position for 2017.

This committee is the backbone of our association. If you have an interest in as-

suming this chair let us know. Michael, we thank you for your service.

Speaking of membership, we have one new member this month; Smith

and Jennings Inc. here in High Point. Our contact person is David Smith (336)

869-2714. For those who are not familiar with them they do grading and hauling.

As we say goodbye to 2016, and hello to 2017, I want to thank everyone

for allowing me to serve as your President this year. While overall it has been a

good year it has also been a challenging one. We are a small association that in-

volves many moving parts. As a nonprofit we rely on volunteerism to survive,

our hope is that each member will contribute in their own way to make us more

successful in 2017. If you would like to volunteer let Sandy in the office or any

one of your Board members know and we will find a place that suits you. In-

volvement is the key to making the association work for you!

Don't Leave Your Money On The Table!

If you are holding in inventory for sale a single-family or duplex house or land which you have im-proved for residential or commercial purposes since July 1, 2015, you are eligible to have the

value of these improvements exempted from local property taxes.

This exemption also applies to single-family and duplex houses under construction or land currently being developed. But, you must apply for this exemption every January.

In one of NCHBA's most important legislative victories ever, the General Assembly in 2015 ex-empted from local property tax the increase in value of real property held for sale by a builder or developer to the extent that the increase is attributable to subdivision or other improvement to the

property. For more information and details on this law, click on this link.

Don't leave your money on the table! Apply for this exemption.

FOR MORE INFORMATION: Contact Mike Carpenter, [email protected], or Tim Minton, [email protected], or call NCHBA at (800) 662-7129.

Sincerely, Mike Carpenter

NCHBA Executive Vice President

“Lobbying Expense” Portion of 2017 NCHBA

Regular and Affiliate Member Dues

“Dues paid to the North Carolina Home Builders Association (NCHBA) are not tax deductible as

charitable contributions for income tax purposes. However, they may be tax deductible as ordinary

and necessary business expenses subject to restrictions imposed as a result of association lobbying

activities. The NCHBA estimates that the non-deductible portion of your 2017 dues—the portion

which is allocable to lobbying—is 50%.

For a member who pays their regular NCHBA dues of $70 in 2017, 50% or $35 will not be eligible

for deduction as a business expense, and $35 of the NCHBA dues may be tax deductible as an ordi-

nary and necessary business expense. NCHBA affiliate member dues are $5 so the amount not de-

ductible is $2.50 and $2.50 may be deductible.

The National Association of Home Builders has made a similar calculation with respect to their por-

tion of builder and associate 2017 dues. For 2017, NAHB has determined that 19% of their regular

annual dues of $182 is non-deductible. Thus, for the NAHB portion of dues $34.58 is not deductible

and $147.42 may be deductible. NAHB affiliate dues are $15 in 2017. Thus $2.85 is not deductible

and $12.15 may be deductible.
