Planting Bulbs that will Light up the High RoadChildren from Brook House Primary School have started transforming an old water trough into a mini-garden.The stone water trough has been sitting on the High Road, outside where the school now is, since Victorian times. It was once used as a watering stop for horses travelling from Tower Bridge but has remained empty for decades.

After an approach from Cllr Sheila Peacock, the school has now ‘adopted’ the trough and on Thursday its own Ecology Club spent half an hour planting bulbs and watering them.

“We are eco warriors!” said Abdul, aged 10, laughing. “The important thing is to put the bulbs in quite a deep hole because if they are too near the surface squirrels and snails will come along and eat them!”

Snowdrops and bluebells are some of the flowers which will blossom in the spring…an apt choice being not only the colours of Brook House but the local football team!

Join the Great British Spring Clean campaignFrom 3-5 March hundreds of thousands of people across the country will take part in the Great British Spring Clean campaign. Last year the campaign got 250,000 people outdoors, active and involved in clean up events.

The Great British Spring Clean campaign’s website has everything you need to set up your own clean-up in Haringey. The website includes advice, information about how to apply for clean up equipment and downloadable posters to promote your event.

Sarah Hayes, Senior Project Coordinator for the Beautiful Boroughs Project said: “We plan to help many more people to get out there and clean up in 2017. Haringey residents have really got behind previous events and it would be great to see even more get involved to help clean up our streets.”

If you would like more information on clean ups or how to organise your own event email: [email protected] or, visit www.greatbritishspringclean.org.uk or call us on 020 8489 0000.

Haringey Council’s ward budget scheme still has funds available for voluntary/community led projects. Apply before the deadline of 28 February 2017.

Under the scheme residents, community groups, charities and businesses are invited to make proposals before ward councillors. Ward councillors work together to agree criteria, objectives and timescales for their wards. Each of the 19 wards in Haringey has £10K available to spend each year.

Examples of projects that are likely to meet the funding

criteria include ones that might:

• Provide access to tools for a community garden

• Impact positively on resident engagement

• Provide seed funding for a larger project, such as improving shop fronts

• Engage a particular part of the community on a specific issue

Full information and the application form can be found on the Haringey Council website. Go to www.haringey.gov.uk and search for ‘Ward budgets’. Alternatively you can contact Customer Services on 020 8489 0000.

N17 Design Studio Partnership comes to a closeAfter two successful years, the ground-breaking N17 Design Studio partnership between Haringey Council, John McAslan + Partners (JMP), and the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London (CONEL) to transform an empty Tottenham shop into a design hub offering work placements and training to local people, has come to a close.

The project was originally planned as a one year pilot but was extended to run until December 2016. As well as taking on six apprentices and providing work experience placements, JMP have worked with pupils and teachers in Haringey Schools running field trips, workshops and interview skills training to actively promote the different career pathways into architecture and design. The schools engaged include Northumberland Park Community School, Woodside High, St Thomas More and Highgate Wood School.

Daisy Ignatiou, who joined JMP as an apprentice in 2014, has since become a permanent member of the JMP Marketing Team:

“I am really happy to have been part of the N17 initiative and to be working at JMP. I have learnt so much since joining the practice, not just work-related skills about life skills as well.”Although the N17 Design Studio will no longer operate, the collaboration between Haringey and JMP will continue throughout 2017 with an apprenticeship placement and an ongoing education outreach programme with local schools.

The building will be re-let and any enquiries should be directed to [email protected].
