MISSOULA – Country music star Chris Stapleton will play the Adams Center at the University of Montana onFriday, Aug. 3.

Stapleton’s “All-American Road Show” tour will feature Marty Stuart and Brent Cobb as special guests.

The tour announcement follows a big weekend for Stapleton, who won Best Country Album, Best Country Songand Best Country Solo Performance during the 60th Grammy Awards on Jan. 28. The night before he appeared asthe musical guest on “Saturday Night Live.”

Stapleton’s album “From A Room: Volume 2” was released Dec. 1, 2017, and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard TopCountry albums chart and No. 2 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart. It followed the May 2017 release of “From ARoom: Volume 1,” which was the No. 1 bestselling country album of 2017. Stapleton’s 2015 double-platinum solodebut, “Traveller,” was the No. 2 bestselling country album of 2017.

MISSOULA – A major health conference about chronic pain care, featuring national experts on the topic, will beheld Thursday and Friday, April 5-6, at the University of Montana. Continuing education credits will be available forhealth professionals.

The Montana Pain Conference: Evolving Science and Modalities will be held both days in the University CenterBallroom. Participants can register online at https://www.mtpain.org.

The conference will be hosted by the Western Montana Area Health Education Center and the Family MedicineResidency of Western Montana.

MISSOULA – University of Montana scientists have published a study in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolutionshowing that bacterial diversity may stick around millions of years longer than previously thought. The researchers,in UM‘s Division of Biological Sciences, were led by Associate Professor Scott Miller.

Bacteria have an amazing ability to rapidly adapt to environmental change. Innovation in these organisms, therefore,is thought to be predominantly recent, repeatable and transient. For example, during an outbreak of a bacterialpathogen, resistance to an antibiotic may independently evolve multiple times, yet quickly be lost in the absence ofthe drug.

While studying a multicellular bacterium from a hot spring in Yellowstone National Park, the researchers found thatupstream and downstream members of the population produce functionally different kinds of specialized cells calledheterocysts.

“It looks like variation in temperature favors different types of heterocysts,” Miller said.

The team also unexpectedly discovered that this diversity has a surprisingly long history.

“By looking at the same bacterium from around the world, we traced back the origin of these different heterocyststens of millions of years,” Miller said.

Bacterial populations often are incredibly diverse, but scientists disagree about whether this diversity is mainly dueto chance or is actively maintained. This study raises the question of whether maintenance over extraordinary timescales may play a more important role in the distribution of microbial diversity than previously recognized.

similar to equipment thatstudents will use as they enterclinical sites for their required training.

“It will allow for realistic simulations for students’ training, such as bedside radiography,” said Dan Funsch, clinicalcoordinator for the Radiologic Technologist program. “This donation enables students to practice with an importanttool for radiologic technologists.”

Missoula College has worked with Turn-Key Medical Inc. for more than three years, most recently for assistance indesigning its X-ray lab at the new River Campus. The college also purchased a non-energized training system fromTurn-Key, which allows students to simulate and practice various X-ray procedures without the risk of emittingionizing radiation. Turn-Key is based in Boise, Idaho, and supplies diagnostic imaging equipment to health carefacilities throughout the region.

MISSOULA – The Wilderness Institute at the University of Montana invites UM students and the public to theannual Wilderness Issues Lecture Series, held at 7 p.m. each Tuesday of spring semester in Gallagher BusinessBuilding Room 123. The series begins Jan. 30.

This year’s series, “The Rivers Will Run,” celebrates the 50th anniversary of the National Wild and Scenic RiversAct, passed by Congress in 1968 to protect free-flowing, undammed portions of rivers across the U.S.

“2018 gives us the opportunity to celebrate the wilderness of waterways – the wild and scenic rivers,” WildernessInstitute Director Natalie Dawson said. “This is especially exciting for Montanans, as we were home to some of thefirst rivers designated under this act. It was also the result of hard work of Montanans like Lance and JohnCraighead, who spearheaded this important legislation.”

The lectures will feature perspectives from scholars, writers, photographers, activists, recreationists, policy expertsand managers. Each will discuss the implications of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act in the U.S. and abroad.

MISSOULA – KBGA 89.9 FM College Radio’s annual weeklong fundraiser Radiothon will return to MissoulaSaturday through Friday, Feb. 24 – March 2. The station hopes to raise $20,000 in donations to help replaceoutdated studio equipment.

During the week, donors can purchase station merchandise and goods from local businesses as premiums athttp://kbga.org/ to help KBGA while also supporting shops and restaurants around town.

In addition to online donations, KBGA will sponsor numerous community events and host several challengesthroughout the week. The Radiothon schedule is:

MISSOULA – University of Montana Professor Mark Hebblewhite is coauthor of a paper published Jan. 25 in thejournal Science that shows mammals move distances two to three times shorter in human-modified landscapes thanin wild landscapes.

This is the first time this topic has been examined on a global scale and for many different species at once.

Most mammals are on the move every day while searching for food, mates or shelter. Some larger mammals, likewolves, generally move longer distances, while smaller mammals, such as hares, usually cover shorter distances.

A team led by biologist Marlee Tucker,Senckenberg Biodiversity and ClimateResearch Centre, and Goethe UniversityFrankfurt has shown that the extent ofthese movements is significantlyreduced in human-altered landscapes

compared to those in wilder, naturalareas.

Tucker and 113 coauthors from variousinstitutions collated movement data from803 individuals across 57 mammalspecies from around the globe rangingin size from rodents weighing 0.5 kg toelephants. They used Movebank, a dataportal that archives movement data from researchers across the world. GPS-tracked movements of individualanimals were recorded for two months. That data then were compared to the human footprint index in the samelocations. The index measures how much an area has been changed by human activities such as infrastructure,settlements or agriculture. The study also accounted for habitat productivity using NASA-derived measures ofhabitat productivity.

Hebblewhite, professor in UM’s Wildlife Biology Program, says mammals might move less because they havechanged their behavior in human-modified landscapes. In Canada, this has implications for protected areas such asBanff National Park, as well as areas with greater human use and those impacts.

“Our data showed reduced movements of species like wolves and elk in areas with high human footprints,”Hebblewhite said. “Here in Montana, we are concerned about loss of long-distance movements like migration for elkbecause of agricultural subsidies. Loss of migration is bad for ranchers and for elk, because ultimately, migrationhelps maintain higher numbers of elk and reduces conflicts with humans.”

The researchers also are concerned that the reduced travel distances could affect ecosystem functions that hingeon animal movements.

“It is important that animals move, because in moving they carry out important ecological functions like transportingnutrients and seeds between different areas,” Tucker said. “Additionally, mammalian movements bring differentspecies together and thus allow for interactions in food webs that might otherwise not occur. If mammals move lessthis could alter any of these ecosystem functions.”

MISSOULA – The University of Montana School of Theatre & Dance will hold a benefit concert showcasing orginalchoreography from students, guest artists and faculty at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 2-3.

The 15th annual American College Dance Association Benefit Concert features performers and choregraphers whowill attend the Northwest Regional Conference in March at the University of Colorado, Boulder. The Benefit Concertfeatures choreographers’ work slated to be performed at this year’s ACDA conference and adjudicated by nationallyand internationally renowned dance artists and critics. The Benefit Concert helps toraise critical funds for UM dancestudents to attend theconference while alsoshowcasing the latest dancework before they represent UMin Boulder. The concert is entirely student-run, with full lighting, costumes, sound design, choreography andperformance.

Highlights of this year’s concert include:

Tsiambwom Akuchu’s “Every^Man (Alright),” a powerful solo exploring African-American history and theevolution of hip-hop culture through dance. Set to a masterful sound score, including poetry by Claude McKay,this socially and politically charged piece draws the audience in with a visceral view of the black Americanexperience. “Every^Man (Alright)” will represent the UM School of Theatre & Dance in the adjudicated concertat ACDA.“Orbiting,” an excerpt from Bare Bait Dance’s “All About Moon.” Choreographed by BBD Artistic Director JoyFrench, “Orbiting” explores humans’ varied connections with the moon: mythical, romantic and scientific. TheDance Program is honored to feature French’s work, and the Montana Arts Council recently honored her with a2017 Artist’s Innovation Award.Excerpts from “Jasper’s Farm,” a newly choreographed work by Missoula native and UM guest artist BrianGerke. The performance features eight dance students embodying the iconic movement that Gerke hascultivated over the past 10 years. After studying in New York City with dance masters such as Hilary Eastonand Trisha Brown Dance, Gerke immigrated to Reykjavik, Iceland, to collaborate with dance partner SteinunnKetilsdóttir. In 2012, he joined the Iceland Dance Company 2 and became a featured and award-winningsoloist throughout his tenure there until 2015. Gerke is the first American dancer honored with the IcelandicGriman award for Dance Performer of the Year since its inception in 2003. “Jasper’s Farm” also will representUM’s School of Theatre & Dance in the ACDA adjudicated concert.

MISSOULA – The next episode of a University of Montana student-produced television program featuring Montana-based businesses will feature custom bikes for Montana terrain, small economical homes, women’s workwearpaired with a music festival, healthy and tasty homemade doughnuts, and second-to-none fly rods.

“Business: Made in Montana” profiles companies that create products in Big Sky Country and conduct businessaround the state, country and world. The new program will premiere at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, across the state onMontanaPBS. An encore presentation is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10.

For many years, “Business: Made in Montana” has featured hundreds of different businesses. This episode signalsthe start of its 25th season presenting quality Montana products.

This program introduces viewers to Bitterroot Cycles in Hamilton, Eco-Built Homes in Billings, Red Ants Pantsin White Sulphur Springs, Tandem Doughnuts in Missoula and The R.L. Winston Rod Company in Twin Bridges.

Bitterroot Cycles makes hardtail mountain bikes that feature its signature brands, “The Weasel” and “The Beaver.”

MISSOULA – This spring, the University of Montana will bring the most well-known custodians of Ireland’s musicand song tradition to Montana for “A Springtime of Irish Music and Song.”

The concert series, hosted by UM’s Irish Studies program and the School of Music in partnership with Friends ofIrish Studies and the Fulbright Commission of Ireland, features visitors from families who passed on musicaltraditions from generation to generation.

The first concert features young fiddle player and pianist Orla McCague from County Monaghan. FollowingMcCague is button accordion player Danny O’Mahony from Ballyduff in County Kerry. The third concert featuresremarkable Uilleann piper Eoin Ó Riabhaigh from County Cork. Closing this series is the master of the whistle,bodhrán and sean-nós singing, Liam Ó Maonlaí. Ó Maonlaí also is the lead vocalist for the Irish rock bandHothouse Flowers.

The concert series is part of the Irish Studies music course Traditional Music and Song of Ireland that McCague isteaching this spring. McCague is a champion Irish fiddler and a Fulbright Irish language teaching assistant at UM.Professor Patrick Williams of the School of Music designed the course to give students an authentic and appliedexperience of Irish music.

The visiting musicians will speak to students and the community about traditional music, their instruments and futuredirection of the tradition. The musicians also will visit local high schools to share their knowledge and passion forIrish music. Inclusion of the community in these workshops is central to Irish Studies’ long-term objective of buildingcloser cultural ties between Montana and Ireland.

This year officially marks 28 years of Pearl Jam performing live. The August show will mark the seventh time Pearl Jam has performed at UM. The group first played the UniversityTheatre on June 16, 1993, and returned for a show in the field house on Feb. 8, 1995. MISSOULA – The U.S. Department of State once again has selected the University of Montana as one of a handfulof U.S. universities to host the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Long-term English Language Program.

Up to 20 Hubert Humphrey Fellows will participate in the five-month language and culture program, hosted by UM’sEnglish Language Institute (ELI). From the end of March through August, Fellows will improve their Englishlanguage proficiency and understanding of American culture. When they finish, participants will serve as academicFellows at other U.S. institutions for one year.

The Humphrey Program is a Fulbright exchange activity funded primarily through the State Department’s Bureau ofEducational and Cultural Affairs. It brings accomplished mid-career professionals from developing countries to theU.S. for a year of academic and professional training and engagement. The program allows Fellows to interact withand learn from U.S. leaders in their respective fields, which are usually business, public administration and law.

Humphrey Fellows are selected in their home countries based on their potential for leadership and commitment topublic service. The program intends to foster a mutual exchange of knowledge and understanding about issues of

common global concern. More than 5,500 people have served as Humphrey Fellows since the program began in1979. Between 150 and 200 Fellowships are awarded annually.

This is the second consecutive Humphrey Program award ELI has received. For the past five years, Humphreyfellows from countries such as Burundi, Vietnam, Haiti, Colombia and Armenia have perfected their Englishlanguage skills here.

UM and Missoula offer Humphrey fellows unique opportunities to learn about the United States and interact with thecommunity, for example, through public presentations and Q-and-A sessions at the Jeannette Rankin Peace Centerin downtown Missoula. The positive experiences Humphrey Fellows have had at UM and in the Missoula communitylikely helped ELI earn this new award.

Founded in 1993, ELI serves international students seeking to improve their English language and academic skillsin order to pursue studies at UM or another institution of higher education, or for professional training purposes. Theinstitute, housed within UM’s Global Engagement Office, provides academic year and summer instruction, as well astailored short-term English language and American culture training programs. ELI has taught English to studentsfrom more than 44 countries, with a majority of students continuing their studies at UM or other Americaninstitutions.

Often described as outlaws, modern hillbillies and fearless, The Dead South possess a rare sound that’s equallycompelling on record as in person. Their signature blend of bluegrass and classic folk is familiar while eminentlyfresh, as it’s fueled by the kind of energy and ethic one might associate with a punk band.

“A lot of our inspiration comes from an old-school feel, but our sound is an amalgamation of what we all like, andthe punk influence is definitely there,” said vocalist/guitarist Nate Hilts.

MISSOULA – The community is invited to two nights of dancing and honky-tonk music in celebration of a 101-year-old tradition at the University of Montana – the Foresters’ Ball – on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 2-3, in the SchreiberGymnasium.

The dance will run from 7 p.m. to midnight both nights and is open to the public. Tickets now are on sale athttp://www.umt.edu/griztix/ and will become available the week of Jan. 29 in the University Center.

UM students spend the week before the ball transforming the gym into a turn-of-the-century logging town with asaloon, general store, jail, chapel and museum. This year’s theme, “Seven Hells and Choker Bells,” was selectedby chief push Eamon Burke, a junior from Sleepy Hollow, New York, majoring in resource conservation.

The Foresters’ Ball town isopen to the public from 10 a.m.to noon on Saturday for thosewho want to see it before the event.

Headlining the event are performances by musicians Steve Frame and His Western Rebels and opener BenChappelow, accompanied by Kenny Westbrook, Stephen Cooke and Erik Nelson.

Frame and His Western Rebels play old-school honky-tonk and rockabilly tunes. The band played in Nashville for11 years and Frame now calls Wyoming his home. Frame says their music centers around life in Wyoming and theAmerican West, with stories of oilfields, rodeos and honky-tonks. At last year’s Foresters’ Ball, Frame opened forReckless Kelly and this year is bringing his whole band with him to headline.

Ben “Benjo” Chappelow will open both nights with his band’s guitarist Westbrook, bassist Cooke and UM forestrymajor Nelson pickin’ the banjo. Chappelow has been playing since the 86th Foresters’ Ball.

Sobriety is a condition of entry to the Foresters’ Ball. Bags will be checked and all alcohol will be confiscated.However, a beer garden will be offered inside the event for attendees 21 and older from 7:30 to 10 p.m. bothnights. Food also is available.

Proceeds from the event fund scholarships for students who put in at least 80 hours of work planning, constructingand taking down the venue. Students and alumni started working in September to cut the slabs used to constructthe ball. Construction begins the Monday before the ball and runs 12 hours a day, up to an hour before Friday’sdance.

BROWNING – Role models from the University of Montana’s We Are Montana in the Classroom program will travelto Browning on Thursday, Jan. 25, to share UM’s research and educational opportunities with K-12 students.

Rosalyn LaPier (Environmental Studies), Marilyn Marler (Division of Biological Sciences) and Shane Sangrey(Native American Center of Excellence, Skaggs School of Pharmacy) will share hands-on, minds-on activitiesdesigned to inspire students of all ages about higher education and career pathways.

LaPier, an award-winning indigenous writer and ethnobotanist, and Marler, UM’s natural areas specialist, co-teachUM’s Native Plant Stewardship and Ethnobotany Supervised Internship and will collaboratively lead ethnobotanyactivities with students. Sangrey is a student resource adviser with NACOE and will lead health-science activities.

The three role models will visit high-school science classes in the afternoon and host activity tables at BrowningHigh School’s Science Night from 5 to 7 p.m. Hosted by the BHS Science Club, the evening event is free and opento the community.

MISSOULA – University of Montana President Seth Bodnar invites the campus and Missoula communities tocelebrate the University’s 125th birthday during the annual Charter Day awards ceremony and reception at 5 p.m.Thursday, Feb. 15, in the George and Jane Dennison Theatre.

Charter Day, which marks the anniversary of the University’s chartering by the Montana Legislature in 1893,celebrates the strong connection between the UM and Missoula communities. This year’s ceremony coincides withCelebrate 125, which will feature a week’s worth of events commemorating UM’s 125th anniversary, including abirthday party encompassing the entire University Center. The Charter Day awards ceremony, sponsored by UM’s Office of Alumni Relations, will honor nine exemplarycampus and community members who help further UM in its dedication to excellence. This year, the awardspresentation will conclude with Bodnar’s introductory address to the UM and Missoula communities. The ceremony,which is free and open to the public, will be followed by a Celebrate 125 reception in the Gilkey Center forExecutive Education.

ASUM Student Service Award: Hannah Zuraff, UM senior, psychology and sociology. This award recognizesdistinguished service and achievement.George M. Dennison Presidential Faculty Award for Distinguished Accomplishment: Rosalyn LaPier, UMassociate professor of environmental studies and research associate for the Smithsonian Institution’s NationalMuseum of Natural History. MISSOULA – Writer Gina Ochsner will visit the University ofMontana to present a fiction craft lecture titled “Mistakes I HaveMade and Great Advice I Wish I Had Taken to Heart” at noonon Friday, Feb. 9, in the Dell Brown Room of Turner Hall. Shewill give a reading the same day in the same location at 7 p.m.

Both the lecture and the reading are free and open to thepublic, sponsored by the President’s Writers-in-ResidenceSeries and the UM Creative Writing Program.

Ochsner teaches writing and literature at Corban University inSalem, Oregon, and with Seattle Pacific University’s Low-Residency MFA program. Her first novel, “The Russian Dreambook of Color and Flight,” was released in 2010 by Houghton Mifflin Harcourtand her latest novel, “The Hidden Letters of Velta B,” will be out in paperback this summer.

Regarding “The Hidden Letters of Velta B,” about a family of Latvian gravediggers, Ochsner said, “If people onlywrote what they feel like they knew, we’d have very little being written. My goal is to find the thematic strands thatapply to us all, that have a universal message that would be true for anyone. I am always looking for the nextlocation or the next thematic tangle that I want to explore.”

MISSOULA – After 29 years of service, Montana Repertory Theatre artistic director and School of Theatre & Danceprofessor Gregory Johnson will retire at the end of the academic year.

Last fall, College of Visual and Performing Arts Dean Stephen Kalm convened a search committee of faculty, staff,students and community members from the School of Theatre & Dance and Montana Rep to conduct a nationalsearch for an exceptional theater professional to fill the role of artistic director.

The large pool of applicants was narrowed to two finalists, both of whom will visit campus during the first two weeksof the spring semester. Michael Legg, director of the Professional Training Company at Actors Theatre of Louisville,will come to campus Jan. 24-26. Peter Ellenstein, former artistic director of the William Inge Festival, will visit thefollowing week, Jan. 31-Feb. 2.

Members of the community are encouraged to attend open forums with the candidates. Legg will present at 4:30p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, with Ellenstein following at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1. Both forums will be held in Room123 of the Gallagher Business Building.

UM Dance Days runs from 9 a.m.to 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, and from9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday,Feb. 3, in the UM Performing Artsand Radio/TV Center. Fridaynight also will feature a concertbeginning at 7:30 p.m.

Participants must register byTuesday, Jan. 30.

Visiting students take masterclasses in five dance genres,participate in a reception with UM dance majors and faculty, and attend the school’s American College DanceAssociation Benefit Concert. The Benefit Concert, an adjudicated concert coinciding with UM Dance Days, presentschoreography by new and established dance artists, and the student-run concert supports the program’s annualattendance to the ACDA Northwest Regional Conference. This year’s conference will be held in March atthe University of Colorado-Boulder.

Dancers also will tour the extensive facilities at UM’s School of Theatre & Dance to learn about opportunities in theprogram and school. The UM Dance Program will hold auditions for admission into its program, and students maysubmit applications for scholarships.

According to Associate Professor of Dance Heidi Jones Eggert, the event is about more than recruiting.

“UM Dance Days is an opportunity to celebrate dance,” Eggert said. “Enthusiastic young artists from around theregion gather to peek into their viable future as dancers in college and beyond.”

MISSOULA, Montana – At the University of Montana, 2,631 students made the fall semester 2017 Dean’s List andPresident’s 4.0 List. To qualify for the Dean’s List or President’s 4.0 List, students must be undergraduates, earn asemester GPA of 3.5 or higher and receive grades of A or B in at least nine credits. MISSOULA – Tickets for country star Keith Urban’s world tour stop at the University of Montana Adams Center onSept. 29 will go on sale Friday, Jan. 26.

At a surprise pop-up show in Nashville, Grammy award-winner Urban announced his “Graffiti U World Tour 2018.”The tour will kick off in June and run through November, making stops in 58 cities, including Missoula. Tickets cost$59 or $89.50 and go on sale at 10 a.m. Jan. 26 at http://www.umt.edu/griztix/, at all Griztix outlets and by phone at888-MONTANA.

“I’ve been full-on writing, recording, collaborating and creating with some incredibly talented people for ‘Graffiti U,’ alot of whom I’ve never worked with before,” Urban said. “I can hear how some of the songs will translate livealready, which really makes putting on a new show so exhilarating, and I loved having our fans included in theannouncement of the tour because it’s their tour too.”

Associate Professor ofMarketing Justin Angle, the podcast’s creator and host. “We’ll have deep conversations with people who thinkdifferently and break paradigms with the way they approach their work, no matter what industry they’re in.”

True to Angle’s word, creative thinking is a common characteristic across the 19 innovators already interviewed.Guests include Jeremy Sauter, marketer for Paramount Pictures; Karen Knudsen, executive director of the ClarkFork Coalition; Kyle Pucko, founder of GeoFli; Tyler Hamilton, former Tour de France cyclist; and Matt McQuilkin,co-owner of Black Coffee Roasting Company.

“This community is really special. There is great opportunity here, but to be successful you have to be creative andyou have to hustle,” said Angle, who also is the Warren and Betsy Wilcox Faculty Fellow at the UM College ofBusiness. “I want to talk to people about their creativity and hustle.”

Angle lends his own expansive knowledge of business principles to each episode. His background makes forcaptivating content on a wide variety of topics. His work includes research on branding, identity and decision-making, which has garnered coverage in mainstream publications such as Sports Illustrated and The WashingtonPost.

A UM faculty member since 2012, Angle came up with the idea for the podcast in the classroom. Students in hisPrinciples of Marketing class seemed more engaged when he assigned podcasts in place of readings, so he createda podcast for them. It covered key class concepts and interviewed fellow College of Business professors andprofessionals tied to the University or the Missoula community.

Angle soon realized the podcast could serve a broader audience. With so many of the community’s innovativethinkers tied to the College of Business, Angle wanted to connect with them and share their stories widely for thebenefit of students and others in the community.

With support from the College of Business, Angle reached out to Stephen Borsum, a former UM student with apassion for digital media who now serves as the podcast’s producer. Musicians from the college contributed tracksfor use on the show. Now, with a cache of recordings and a robust list of upcoming guests, Angle is excited aboutthe potential of this new venture.

“Podcasts are invigorating because interesting ideas can play out in real time,” he said. “Academic research can bepainfully slow, not to mention inaccessible, and business education needs stronger connections to practice. Thispodcast allows us to address both of these problems and have a ton of fun doing it.”

MISSOULA – Although she stepped down as dean of the University of Montana’s Phyllis J. Washington College ofEducation and Human Sciences at the end of 2017, Roberta “Bobbie” Evans isn’t planning on slowing down. Shehas an ambitious agenda to dive back into teaching and research of educational leadership, fueled with new ideas.

“It’s been a privilege to champion projects initiated here that have many national implications,” Evans said, “and Ifeel compelled now to help my colleagues disseminate news of our findings to extend the impact of the University ofMontana’s work to benefit all students in America.”

Thanks to private support, Evans will be able to dive in feet first. Evans has been named the inaugural William C.Shreeve Chair in Educational Leadership.

The Shreeve Chair honors William C. Shreeve, an exceptional educator who received his Bachelor of Arts andMaster of Education degrees from UM. He earned his doctorate at the University of Northern Colorado before joiningthe faculty of Eastern Washington University in 1967 and ultimately becoming a full professor in educationalleadership. 12 education, and he instituted many national award-winning programs during his tenure. Recognized for leadershipin higher education that modeled the very approaches he taught, Shreeve served as chair of the EWU’s Departmentof Education from 1972 until he retired in 1996.

As the William C. Shreeve Chair, Evans – like Shreeve himself – will benefit from her own successful leadershipexperience to provide unique insight into the landscape of contemporary research about leadership andorganizational theory, focusing especially upon the nexus of theory and practice where the most significant learninghas been made possible for a wide array of students.

“It’s a thrilling opportunity for me to have been selected to receive this honor, and I am very excited to expand thefootprint of important research in educational leadership,” Evans said. “There is absolutely nothing better thanworking directly with schools and universities to reach more students, more successfully.”

Evans joined the UM faculty in 1989, advancing through the faculty ranks from assistant professor to associate,then full professor. She served as department chair, program director, principal investigator and dean, a positionshe held from 2001 to 2003 and then again from 2006 to Dec. 31 2017. During her tenure, she oversaw a doublingof enrollment in the college, the creation of 17 new programs, all-time highs in research expenditures andunprecedented philanthropic support. Evans credits “phenomenal faculty, students and professional staff” forachievements in the college, where enrollment growth has increased in each of the past three years.

UM President Seth Bodnar expressed his appreciation for Dean Evans’ service and leadership at UM andwelcomed her into her new role as the William C. Shreeve Chair in Educational Leadership.

MISSOULA – The University of Montana spectrUM Discovery Area will join museums and science centersnationwide in celebrating the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” with a day of Frankenstein-themedactivities on Thursday, Jan. 18.

From 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at spectrUM Discovery Area, located at 812 Toole Ave., visitors can build a voltaic pile(the first kind of battery), construct a Franken-toy creature using parts from other toys, make an automaton (amoving mechanical device that imitates the movements of a living thing), create a scribbling robot, design a maskthat lights up and more.

The activities are part of Frankenstein200, an educational program created by the National Informal Stem EducationNetwork to support scientific learning and inspire conversations around themes found in Shelley’s “Frankenstein,”including creativity, social responsibility and scientific ethics.

The Missoula Public Library will join the event beginning at 3 p.m. with activities and a selection of relevant librarybooks. This collaboration is one of many ways that spectrUM works with community partners toward closing

Now in its 10th year, spectrUM Discovery Area is UM’s hands-on science center, serving more than 200,000Montanans annually through in-museum and statewide mobile programming. SpectrUM is part of UM’s BroaderImpacts Group, which harnesses the University’s research and creative scholarship to foster social mobility and avibrant, homegrown workforce for Montana. BIG and spectrUM are supported by an array of local and nationalfunding sources, including the National Science Foundation, Montana NSF EPSCoR, NASA, the U.S. Department ofEducation, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Jane S.Heman Foundation and the Martin Family Foundation.

MISSOULA – The University of Montana School of Theatre & Dance will hold weekly children’s dance classesbeginning Thursday, Feb. 1, in the Performing Arts and Radio/Television Center.

Creative movement classes provide opportunities for children to express their inherent creativity through theirbodies. Based on the premise that children love to move, creative movement capitalizes on a child’s naturalmovement forms: jumping, twisting, spinning and leaping. Children also are exposed to elements of dance andbasic movement patterns.

According to adjunct instructor of dance Laurel Sears, children – even those who may never have formally dancedbefore – benefit from the course in multiple ways.

“Parents tell me all the time how much their kids re-enact what they learned in the class at home,” Sears said. “One

student recently themed her whole fifth birthday party around her class.”

UM’s children dance classes, offered to students ages 3 1/2 to 10, serve as an introduction to dance. Additionally,7- to 10-year-old students will have the opportunity to learn the basics of dance technique and create their ownoriginal choreography.

The classes will take place each Thursday of the spring session beginning Feb. 1 and ending April 26, with March29 off for spring break. Classes are segmented by age: 3:30 to 4 p.m. for students ages 3 1/2 to 4, 4:15 to 5 p.m.for students ages 5 to 6 and 5:15 to 6 p.m. for students ages 7 to 10.

The class costs $80 per student per semester, plus a $15 administrative fee per student per academic year. Thereis a 10 percent sibling discount, and registration ends Feb. 8.

All classes are accompanied by live piano and drums. As part of the School of Theatre and Dance’s courseofferings, UM students earn credit for participating as student teachers. With the addition of the student teachers ineach class, children get personal attention and the opportunity to learn from various teaching styles.

MISSOULA – Two University of Montana Regents Professors recently were recognized as Highly CitedResearchers on the 2017 list of “The World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds.”

The publication, released in December by Clarivate Analytics, lists UM Regents Professor of Ecology RaganCallaway and recently retired UM Regents Professor of Ecology Steve Running under its Environment/Ecologysection.

Callaway and Running ranked in the top 1 percent of scientists by citations for field and publication year in Web ofScience. The listing is online at https://clarivate.com/hcr/2017-researchers-list/.

“Professors Callaway and Running are most deserving of this recognition,” said Scott Whittenburg, vice presidentfor research and creative scholarship at UM. “I have been in many scientific meetings where the work of each hasbeen cited, so it is not surprising that citations of their publications are in the top 1 percent of their fields.”

National Genomics Center for Wildlife and Fish Conservation and an adjunct faculty member in UM’s WildlifeBiology Program. Callaway, Running and Schwartz are the only researchers in Montana included on the list.

“The publication of seminal work by our faculty and the citation of that research by others in the field are one of thekey reasons UM continues to be ranked among the top universities in the world,” Whittenburg said. “Research andcreative scholarship at UM continues on a bright path forward.”

Callaway is a professor in the UM Division of Biological Sciences who studies how plants function together incommunities and ecosystems, and his research has taken him around the world. He tracked knapweed back to itsnative range in Central Europe, researching how the invader interacts with soil microbes and other plants in waysthat might naturally keep knapweed in check.

Callaway also has sought out low-lying cushion plants on mountaintops from Montana to Alaska, the Andes,Europe, the Caucasus and New Zealand, studying how plants facilitate survival among one another and formcommunities in some of the harshest environments on Earth.

Running taught at UM since 1979 until his retirement in 2017. He is an internationally recognized scholar in satellite-remote sensing data, global vegetation productivity, climate change and more. He served on the NASA AdvisoryCouncil Science Committee and was chair of the Earth Science committee. He also has been a team member of theNASA Earth Observing System, a member of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ScienceAdvisory Board Climate Working Group and a chapter lead author for the Nobel Prize-winning 2007 Assessment ofthe Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Research continues to surge at a record pace at UM, with the institution bringing in nearly $88 million in new fundingduring the past fiscal year to support homegrown Montana research, entrepreneurship and statewide outreach. Thisexceeds the previous year’s record of $86 million.

teleconferencing into liveclassroom discussions orviewing recorded lecturesonline. Students can even blendall three content delivery options depending on their individual needs throughout the semester.

“This program is ideal for anyone who needs flexibility because it meets you wherever you are,” said College ofBusiness Dean Chris Shook. “Members of the military, someone who might have a move on the horizon or anyonewho plans to continue to work through the program would benefit from this redesigned curriculum.”

Shook said the program works especially well for students in UM’s dual-degree programs in law, physical therapyand pharmacy because they can continue coursework through clinicals or other demands on their time.

Students joining class by teleconference can do so from any location, including one of six group sites aroundMontana.

“The trend for MBA programs is going to online delivery,” said Dawn Hambrick, the program’s interim director.“We’re known for having a personal touch where we’re dedicated to each student’s success, so we’re offering thisflexible delivery option to maintain that.”

Courses in the 32-credit curriculum last five or 10 weeks and take place during evenings and select weekends,though students can complete all coursework through distance education if they choose. Full-time students with aprevious undergraduate degree in business can complete the accelerated program in one year. Part-time studentscan earn their degree in two to five years. For those who do not have an undergraduate degree in business, UMprovides the required prerequisites in five online courses.

Not only is the program accelerated and affordable – TopManagementDegrees.com ranked it the 13th in the nationfor affordability in 2017 – administrators say the program is designed to deliver flexible high-level executiveeducation.

“If we don’t have the expertise in a particular topic among our faculty, we bring in outside professionals to deliver



electives,” Hambrick said. “We look to our many connections in industry to get the right people from companies likeNike, Starbucks, Patagonia and FAST Enterprises to teach those courses.”

Students graduate with a general MBA, but are encouraged to specialize through their choices of electives such assustainability or digital marketing. They also can earn a certificate in entertainment management or entrepreneurshipalong with their diploma.

All MBA students, on and off campus, also have access to the Gianchetta Student Success Center, which includesindividualized academic advising and internship and career development through the College of Business.

No matter where they are, geographically or in their careers, now is a great time for students to pursue an MBA,Shook said.

MISSOULA – The Bureau of Business and Economic Research at the University of Montana will begin its 43rdAnnual Economic Outlook Series with presentations in Helena on Tuesday, Jan. 23, Great Falls on Wednesday,Jan. 24, and Missoula on Friday, Jan. 26.

This year’s keynote address, “The Future of Higher Education in Montana,” will be presented by Montana UniversitySystem Regent Vice-Chair and Glacier Bank Market President Robert “Bob” Nystuen. He will discuss the fiveprimary challenges impacting higher education in Montana – enrollment, funding, student completion, student debtand traditional mindsets.

“For 125 years Montanans have chosen to invest in accessible and affordable high-quality education that allowedgenerations of students to find jobs, make sizeable economic, social and cultural contributions and create the one-of-a-kind fabric of our state,” Nystuen said. “But the public’s perspectives on the value of education – most notablyhigher education – have certainly become more varied and not necessarily in a good way.”

The programs also will feature a local expert reporting on the local economy.

MISSOULA – The University of Montana recently received high rankings from two national organizations thatmeasure institutions based on best practices for military- and veteran-supportive education.

In November, Military Friendly honored UM with a gold-level 2018 Military Friendly School Award in the Tier 2research institution category, improving over last year’s silver-level ranking. For more than a decade, MilitaryFriendly ratings have set the standard for colleges demonstrating positive education outcomes for veterans and theirfamilies. Military Friendly rates companies and colleges on their programs to recruit and retain military veterans asemployees and students.

MISSOULA – University of Montanaresearchers have made another discovery atthe cellular level to help understand the basicprocesses of all life on our planet – this timewithin the unusual bacteria that has lived insidecicada insects since dinosaurs roamed Earth.

During the past 70 million years, the bacteriaunderwent extreme adaptations to live within theinsects’ bodies, losing between an estimated 95to 97 percent of their genes and resulting insome of the smallest genomes known to anyorganisms. In the process, they lost the ability tolive anywhere outside of cicadas.

“Cicada symbiotic complexes are very different from any other known organism,” said Matt Campbell, a UMgraduate student who studies cicadas in UM biology Associate Professor John McCutcheon’s lab, based in theDivision of Biological Sciences.

Many insects live in very close associations with beneficial, or “symbiotic,” bacteria. These bacterial symbioses arecritically important for insects that consume only one type of food that is missing some essential nutrients.Examples include blood-feeding lice as well as insects that feed on plant sap – aphids, leafhoppers and cicadas.

The UM research has shown that cicadas’ symbiotic bacteria produce amino acids and vitamins that their insecthosts require to grow and reproduce.

During three field seasons studying a South American cicada, UM postdoctoral researcher Piotr Lukasik foundmany of the species’ single symbiotic bacterium evolved into complexes of several different types of bacterium inthe same cicada.

“Through that process, individual bacteria have lost many genes and now depend on each other because every typecontains unique, essential genes,” Lukasik said. “The different types must all work together to provide the aminoacids and vitamins their cicada host requires.”

A different species of cicada, located in the eastern U.S., contains dozens of small, rapidly evolving types ofbacterium. Individual types typically contain few recognizable genes and are distributed among different cellularcompartments within a cicada in a way that is not fully understood.

“Cicadas host symbiotic complexes rather than a single, well-behaved bacteria, which could be a challenge for thespecies,” Lukasik said. “After all, when you need a meal – whether it is a vitamin required by a cicada or a pizzacraved by a hungry student – it’s easier to obtain it from a single source rather than cobbling it together from severaldifferent sources.”

The researchers believe this evolution of bacterium happened by chance, and despite not being helpful to thecicada, the microscopic creatures must stay for the long haul because the cicada now requires them to survive.

“Indeed, the cicadas with the longest life cycles are also those with the craziest bacterial symbionts,” Lukasik said.

The research recently was published in the Current Biology article “Idiosyncratic Genome Degradation in a BacterialEndosymbiont of Periodical Cicadas,” as well as in the study “Multiple Origins of Interdependent EndosymbioticComplexes in a Genus of Cicadas” in the latest issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of theUnited States of America.
