Epiphany Reminds Us

Sometime after our Lord’s birth, (perhaps a year or even more) a group of Magi from the East (stargazers and students of mystery) followed a miraculous star right to the very house where the newborn King of the Jews was living. They entered the house of the Holy Family that Joseph had obviously secured by this time, and saw the child with His mother Mary. We are then told they fell down upon their faces and began to worship the CHILD!!! These wealthy men, who were used to being in the presence of the King of Babylon, treated this poor house like a palace and fell down, and worshipped the child. If Mary and Joseph had forgotten that this normal looking baby was something more, this was certainly a powerful reminder. That is what the season of Epiphany is for, to give us reminders that this Christmas Baby is also God our creator, God made flesh in order to be like us so that we can be recreated to be like Him! We are also told by St. Matthew that the magi presented this child with three gifts (probably why the tradition of three wise men began), gold, frankincense and myrrh. Three expensive, thoughtful gifts suited perfectly for Who the child is and what He was born to do. Gold -- for The King (probably helped pay for their escape into Egypt later...), Frankincense -- an incense used at the altar to symbolize prayer, given here as a prayerful offering to God in the flesh Himself, and myrrh -- a burial spice, for this child was born to die. This Child, God the Son made flesh, was the Messiah, the Substitute, the One born to take our place under the wrath and judgment of God, the One born to die in order to destroy Sin, Satan, and Death by His own death in our place on a cross. So even with the gifts we find a powerful Epiphany reminder of the Divinity of this child whose birth we celebrate, that He is much more than just a precious baby. He is God in diapers. God come into your very flesh in order to take your place under His wrath and justice and restore you back unto Him. The Star, the worship, the gifts, all remind us of exactly who this Baby was, His Divinity, that He is God our Creator and Redeemer. Such reminders are necessary for us. In this we are reminded how it is indeed a gift of God to have faith in His Son. You see, by fallen and corrupt nature we were like Jerusalem, unresponsive and dead to our Lord and Creator. But, we rejoice in knowing that it was God who brought us to Him through the same means he reached the magi -- His means of Grace. Though He did not use a prophesied, miraculous star to guide us, He has reached out to us gentiles, the unbelievers, those lost in the darkness of sin and despair, and made us His believing children through the light of His Word, the Gospel. Through Baptism, He has been able to guide us like a star to His very real presence of His Son, to His House to worship Him just as the wise men did in Bethlehem. He is the One who has enabled us to respond to Who He is and what He has done by offering Him gifts just like the magi -- our "treasures", everything we have, our time, talents, possessions, everything back to His glory and welfare of neighbor. He has made us gentiles into His Baptized children, the true children of Abraham who seek the Light of His face. God grant us the Grace this Epiphany season to be reminded from His Word of Who this Child born for us is and What He was born to do for us, and live in that joyful knowledge and comfort! Pastor Kevin

What a wonderful time of year to reflect on all the blessings the Lord has given us! I am so thankful

for our warm & giving Church Family here at Trinity. Thank you to everyone who has shared their

time, talent, and treasures in 2017! A very special THANK YOU to Donna Kubesh and Janine

Babcock for their philanthropy and leadership on the Stewardship committee and in our

congregation.

The Mission Cross contribution project for January is the "Soap-er" Bowl. We will be collecting

all kinds of soap: laundry, bar, body wash, hand soap, dish soap, etc. for the Food Pantry. Thank

you to everyone who donated hats, gloves, scarves, and socks for the local school children. The

weather has definitely made all of these items necessary!

If you have any concerns or suggestions for the Stewardship Committee, please feel free to contact me at 641-394-6597.

Wishing all of you Peace & Joy in 2018!

A great big thank you to all who made 2017 a special year!

Trinity congregation is made up of so many persons who share their gifts, many who work tirelessly

behind the scenes often without thanks. As we share our gifts, we reap the benefits of a ministry done

for our Lord. A special thanks to all those who have given Christmas gifts, cards, goodies, and warm

wishes to those of us in the office. God’s best to you in the New Year.

Pr. Kevin Frey Ellen Franzen Jim Mettner Carol Hauser

Our 4th annual Thanksgiving Meal was again a success!

We provided a place for individuals or families to come and enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving Meal

with others from the community.

The meal was affordable to all by only requesting a free will donation.

We provided an opportunity for church members to volunteer and show their Christianity by serving others.

Profit from the meal will be donated to the area food pantry, thus continuing our service to others. The number of

volunteers we have had is tremendous! The volunteers served our guests with such joy and kindness, I'm sure Trinity is

viewed as a friendly, welcoming church.

So many others......we had over 60 individuals that contributed their time, talent, baking skills, or monetary donation to

make this event a success.

A huge thank you to Brian Laures and crew from Big Ed's Firehouse for donating most of the food plus working all day,

and Grant & Krissy Anderson for allowing us to get sweet corn from their field to freeze for our meal. We will present the

food pantry with a check for over $1500!

Thank you isn't hardly enough but we do thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

will give more time for the story and

gets music monthly, we will be

combining two classes for the music

rotation.

NEWS RELEASE Program Scheduled for Adult Children Supporting Aging Caregiving Parents

Does your mom or dad take care of a loved one (perhaps one cares for the other)? Do you know what your parents

are going through? Your parent is in a new role of caregiver when helping a spouse with things he/she cannot do because

of a medical condition’s disabling effects. How do you better support your parent during this time? Or maybe you are in

a caregiving role – how do you take care of yourself while caring for someone else with a chronic illness?

Caregiving Relationships: Conversations on Aging is a program for adult children supporting their aging caregiver

parents. The two sessions are scheduled for January 9th and 16th , 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Trinity Lutheran Church,

223 S. Water St. New Hampton, IA.

“My mom took care of my dad in his last years. He suffered from dementia and tended to wander. As a family

caregiver, my mom made challenging decisions and her daily routine changed dramatically,” shares an adult daughter.

Research shows that spousal caregivers are more likely to provide care with help from adult children than to accept

help from community supports or nonfamily members. “You are a son or daughter to your parent(s) regardless of age,

but your role description can change when your parent is in the role of a caregiver,” explains Cindy Thompson, ISU

Extension and Outreach human sciences specialist in family life.

“The program helps adult children learn to recognize how caregiving affects relationships. It helps them discover

their role in making decisions about their parents’ later life,” says Thompson. It also helps adult children build talking

and listening skills and gain ideas on how to start difficult conversations.
