The Eagle. How befitting is the name of our newsletter at Eastern Nebraska Veterans’ Home. Did you know the Eagle
even from Indian legends and the beauty of the Bald Eagle is often the subject chosen to carve into totems. Many of the
tribes have chosen it for a symbol of honor, achievement, leadership and bravery.
In the same way our members were involved in the naming of our wings at the facility: Allegiance, Dedication, Motivation
and Service.
These are all terms of endearment to those who have served in the military.
In keeping with the thoughts of the importance the American Indians had in selecting the Eagle in so many different as-
pects.
The Comanche tell a creation story about a chief’s young son who died. After the father offered prayers, the boy came back
to life as a large and powerful bird – the eagle. To celebrate this legend the Comanche eagle dance is performed in ceremo-
nies.
The Pawnee believe the eagle is the intermediary between the Creator and the people. The eagle was considered a symbol
of fertility as in their large nests high off the ground they were safe and well protected from intruders and were able to
thrive as eaglets.
The eagle feathers are highly regarded in American Indian culture today. They are used in their religious ceremonies.
It is the words used that remind me of ENVH. Honor honoring our members who have served. Achievement-the things
accomplished. Leadership-the TEAM aspect of what we do. Bravery-if we only knew the who, what, when, where, why
and how. We may not know all, but we know a few gave some and some gave all. Bravery-to all the members who have
deployed into harm’s way.
Allegiance-amazing that when we do the pledge of allegiance how many will stand. Wish we could teach a lesson to those
who feel they must kneel. Dedication-countless examples of above and beyond. Motivation-because we were told to jump,
out response was how high? Service-Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine and all the family support from a grateful nation.
Our members are like the eagle all distinct in their own way. Parts of this story are from the book ‘Magestic Eagles’, by

The stresses and pressures of life sometimes come to us in the occasional, one-time, or periodic events (a car accident, a broken leg, etc.), but sometimes they come in the form of on-going issues that don't seem to get solved and never seem to go away (caring for a
dementia patient, staying a difficult marriage, etc.). Through my own experience and the testimony
of so many people, it seems that one effective, on-going, positive practice to counter those stresses and pressures would be the practice of a daily devotional time or daily quiet time. If you have not tried that, I
would encourage you to do so as we start a new year. This time of year you can find a vast amount of devotional books in Christian bookstores or get devo-
tional magazines like Our Daily Bread. Or you can develop your own approach that might include Bible
reading/meditation, prayer, singing or listening to Christian hymns and songs, etc. To focus on God in the early part of the day sets a positive focus for the day as you acknowledge your ongoing need for and
dependence on God. Let me know if you need assis-tance in finding materials or developing a plan that
might work for you.
