Page 19: January 2020 General Meeting...2020/01/01  · •Every two years, all local party committees are required by Democratic Party of Virginia to “reorganize” -- i.e., choose its party

• Each year, the Arlington Democrats must determine the method that will be used to nominate the Democratic candidate in local partisan races

• We have one local partisan race this year: one seat on the County Board

• Steering Committee unanimously recommended the adoption of a primary as the method of nomination for this race

• Motion to adopt this recommendation?

Page 20: January 2020 General Meeting...2020/01/01  · •Every two years, all local party committees are required by Democratic Party of Virginia to “reorganize” -- i.e., choose its party

• Because School Board members are non-partisan, there is no possibility under Virginia law to hold a primary to identify Democratic candidates

• Instead, the Arlington Democrats hold a caucus to identify the Democratic endorsee(s) for School Board

• The caucus has an election format that is open to all registered voters in Arlington willing to sign a pledge that they are Democrats

• Steering Committee unanimously approved rules to govern the Arlington Dems 2020 School Board Caucus, which will be held on May 7 & 9

• Motion to approve the rules?

Page 21: January 2020 General Meeting...2020/01/01  · •Every two years, all local party committees are required by Democratic Party of Virginia to “reorganize” -- i.e., choose its party

• Arlington has several representatives on the 8th Congressional District Democratic Committee (8CD)

– Evenly divided among men and women

• What does the 8CD do? Among other activities:– Determine Dem. nomination method for VA-8 congressional seat

– Raise funds for candidates

– Conduct a local convention to determine delegates to Democratic National Convention

• There currently is an 8CD Arlington male vacancy, and there *may* be another such vacancy this month

• Steering Committee decided to hold election to fill vacancy

– Election will be at February meeting (Feb. 5)

– Motion to adopt rules for election?
