President’s Message Here’s wishing you all a 2020 year full of artwork and fun ☺ Looking back, 2019 was a great year (check the list of accomplishments later in this Newsletter!) – with the AFA grant, good sales in the Loft, great workshops, a good Spring and Fall Show, Student Show & Open Studio Tour, and Christmas MarketPlace and a time to enjoy each other at the Christmas potluck. Our finances are in good shape, which means we will enjoy some new experiences in 2020 to celebrate the Society’s 35 years in the County.

Speaking of workshops, please check the website and register as soon as possible. Also don’t forget to pay your membership fees, and check the dates/deadlines upcoming in January. The Loft Gallery invites members to participate once you have recorded 20 hours of volunteer time in 2019 and/or 2020. The Loft is a special place created for the Society artists and it would be nice to have new artists participating from time to time.

For our new members, thank you for becoming part of our Society family. Please mark your calendars for February 3 at 6:30. You are invited to come to the Ottewell Centre to learn all about the Society and what it can offer you, and provide you with details of the happenings of the Society. Please register by emailing [email protected] so we can determine the number of pizzas to order ☺

Thank you to all the members who stepped up to volunteer at workshops, events, the usual and extra Gallery shift days, take down at general meetings, and in general to assist wherever needed. This is the foundation of our great Society!

I thank all the members who assisted me in 2019 and have agreed to do so in 2020. Thank you so much for having faith in me to lead and keep the Society organized and busy again in 2020. I look forward to working with the new Board in 2020. To all those travelling south and beyond this winter, our thoughts are with you. May you return safely to be with us.

May you all experience a wonderful 2020 year – let’s look for something beautiful and special in each day… let’s make a group resolution to be with our artistic friends in the Society more often and to create some wonderful expressions of our life experiences in one of the many mediums available to us these days.

Regards, Sonja

CHRISTMAS MARKET REPORT

Thanks to the continual support of our members, their families and friends, the 2019 Christmas Market had sales of $10,189.50. There was $299.60 in cash collected for the Strathcona food bank plus 5 boxes of food. The Strathcona Food Bank very much appreciated our donation. We had 16 very creative vendors this year as well as our baking table. The vendors were a combination of recurring vendors as well as a few new vendors. Thank you for allowing me to chair the market this year. It was a very rewarding experience. Marie SHOW REPORT

5th Annual Hidden Treasures Open Art Studio Tour Registration will open early January for the Art Society of Strathcona County's Hidden Treasures Open Art Studio taking place June 20, 21, 2020. Artists open up their studios to the public for 2 days on this a self-guided tour which is free to the public. Now in its 5th year, this annual tour of the home studios of Strathcona County artists has a proven track record with increasing crowds every year coming from all around the Capital Edmonton region. This is a great opportunity for local artists to show their works in progress, their collection of works and their creative working space. As last year, artists without a home studio can opt to join a member artist in their home studio. The tour is open to members of the Art Society of Strathcona County as well as non-members. This event is heavily promoted through local print publications, radio and on-line sites. More information can be found at www.artstrathcona.com in early January. Registration closes February 29 , 2020. For more information, contact Norma Callicott at [email protected]. ----------------------------------------- thanks Norma--

EXPLANATION OF VOLUNTEER HOURS AND MEETING:

If you have accumulated volunteer hours in 2019 and you pay your membership fee before January 31, 2020, those hours can be carried forward to 2020. If you do not intend to show artwork in the Loft Gallery or the Spring or Fall Show in 2020, then this ruling does not apply - BUT the Society would like to know that you are on board so you can participate in the Christmas Market and any other events that will be organized throughout the year. Also, if you are on the membership list, you will receive the monthly newsletter to keep you up to date on happenings and news!!!
