HEART TO HEART pastor to parish

School News Our parish grade school has been in the forefront of innovation for many years, especially in regards to the use of technology and computers. We’ve got some wonderful news to share about a most recent addition to the way in which students learn at Sacred Heart School. The technology lab has been redesigned into a STEAM lab, one of the only Catholic school steam labs in the area! STEAM stands for: science, technology, engineering, arts and math. STEAM is an interdisciplinary approach to teaching that affords students a more in-depth knowledge of math and science, plus the ability to integrate and apply that knowledge across other fields of learning. In pursuing STEAM projects, teamwork and creativity are stressed. The methodology employed is inquiry-based and problem-solving is achieved through an engineering design process. STEAM goes beyond the projects that student teams are tackling in the lab. This unique interdisciplinary approach to learning is being applied in classrooms as well. Congratulations to the administration, our teachers and students in pursuing STEAM in our school! I say, full steam (get it?) ahead!

Leadership Workshop I will be at the Cardinal Stritch retreat house on the grounds of Mundelein

Seminary from Monday, January 23 through Wednesday, January 25 to attend a pastoral leadership workshop presented by Kellogg (and others) in preparation for the pilot process of Renew My Church. As you know from past bulletin columns, the five parishes of the North Shore will be piloting Renew My Church starting in February. Along with us, the other four parishes are Faith, Hope and Charity, St. Philip, St. Joe, and Francis Xavier. All five pastors will be attending the leadership workshop in Mundelein. Please pray for the success of this workshop.

Did You Know? Renew My Church is the name given to an initiative of Cardinal Cupich that seeks to ensure the sustainable growth of the Church of Chicago. This initiative has, as its goal, that all faith communities are served by a vibrant, vital and life-giving Church experience, that pastoral leaders have the resources they need to carry out the mission of Christ, and that we inspire disciples to accompany all members of our family of faith to a deeper, personal relationship with the Lord. Renew My Church calls us to face our challenges and boldly reimagine what it means to be Church in the Archdiocese of Chicago.

ST. FRANCIS DE SALES MASS & RECEPTION JANUARY 29, 2017 The Daughters of Saint Francis de Sales will celebrate their patron’s feast day with Mass at St. Philip the Apostle Church on Sunday, January 29, 2017 at 11:45 a.m. Fr. Donald Senior will preside at the Mass. Fr. Senior will speak at a reception following the Mass. His topic will be “CHRISTIANS IN THE HOLY LAND: CRISIS AND DESTINY.” Fr. Senior, President Emeritus of Catholic Theological Union, is not only a world

renowned scripture scholar, he has led many tours of the Holy Land, acquiring a depth of knowledge of the country, its sacred and

political history, as well as current issues. The Daughters of Saint Francis de Sales welcome all to attend! St. Philip the Apostle Church is located at 1976 Old Willow Road in Northfield. For more information please call June Hocter, 847-835-3985 or Roseanne Madden, 847-242-4070.

RENEWAL HAS ALWAYS BEEN OUR CALL. The Archdiocese has changed in significant ways over the past several decades. Demographics have shifted dramatically, some buildings are in disrepair, and we have fewer priests to pastor. Yet, at the same time, there is new life as immigrants continue to make Chicagoland their home, as we ordain enthusiastic and energetic new priests and as we live in the historic time when Pope Francis is leading us to live in the joy of the Gospel. Thus, we should not be afraid to face our challenges, but embrace them, seeing this moment as a graced opportunity to chart new ways to live out our mission more fully.

WE ARE CALLED TO MAKE ALL THINGS NEW IN CHRIST. Christ called St. Francis of Assisi to “Rebuild My Church.” As we are reminded by the image of the San Damiano Cross, Christ called Francis to, “Go, rebuild my church.” Francis came to understand that Christ was calling him to renew the Church, and not just rebuild a structure. That is the task before us. Pope Francis has called us to dream big for the Church. “I dream of a ‘missionary option’, that is, a missionary impulse capable of transforming everything so that the Church’s customs, ways of doing things, times and schedules, language and structures can be suitably channeled for the evangelization of today’s world rather than for her self-preservation.” Archbishop Cupich is calling us to renew the Church in Chicago. “Just as our ancestors responded in faith to their dreams and built the church we have today, it is our time to dream big and to take up this work.”

WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY: JANUARY 18-25, 2017 Today is Ecumenical Sunday when we celebrate what God is doing through the many ecumenical agencies—local, regional, national and international—that make up the modern ecumenical movement. As we continue our special prayers “that all may be one... that the world may believe” (John 17:21), we take time to familiarize ourselves with the work that (the Chicago Archdiocese) does to promote understanding and cooperation among Christians and others in our community. Although the annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity concludes Wednesday, we continue to remember this year’s theme: Reconciliation – The Love of Christ Compels Us (2 Corinthians 5:14-20) and pray “that all may be one... that the world may believe” (John 17:21).

FINDING GOD IN EVERYDAY LIFE There are 4 key elements in finding God in our everyday lives.

The realization, the conviction, that God is there. After that, it is all very easy.

A belief in the Good News - that Jesus won a victory over sin and death by his dying and rising for us.

Dying to Self.

Careful practice.

God is there Once I really realize God is there, and become convinced of it, my heart hungers to find God there. Once my appetite is whet, I desire to find God in a much different way than I look for my car keys. What I'm really desiring is intimacy with God. I want to know I'm not alone in my life. I want to be connected with God. How is God there? Or, "who am I connecting with?" God made this whole world and gave life to each and every one of us who lives in it. God made us with purpose - that we be happy with God forever. So, we are not looking for or connecting with a God who is distant or indifferent. Our God is passionately engaged in drawing us to the fullness of life we were created for. We are seeking to find a God who loves us and is always seeking intimacy with us. It is simple. A sense of absence vanishes when I am open to a sense of presence. Living in the Good News I can hardly go through a single day without encountering the reality of sin and death - in me and in the world around me. One way to cope is to join in our culture’s denial of the reality of sin and death. Our faith gives us another way. We have come to believe that Jesus is Lord, most especially where sin and death seem to prevail. We have come to believe that we can open our eyes and act fearlessly in the face of death. We have come to believe we

have nothing to fear. We have come to believe that it is precisely in the places where we encounter the greatest darkness or brokenness or confusion that we will find God. There we discover our Savior. There we experience the Good News. It is in those everyday places - where we taste frailty, unreliability, emptiness - that we find God's love is most powerfully present. Attentive faith finds the gift being offered in every human situation: a love and a peace the world can not give. Less Self-absorbed When I don't fear death as much, I am less afraid of dying to myself. It sounds so obvious. When I'm absorbed with myself - my needs, how much attention I'm getting, doing things my way, everything in reference to me - it is pretty difficult to find God. The "space" inside of me is pre-occupied. However, as my openness to and hunger for a loving presence grows, I am de-selfished and freer. Often my self-pity or self-focus comes out of a fear that I won't have "enough." I fear any "emptiness" so I "fill" it quickly. However, when I ask to be emptied, I discover an empowering fullness. When I become more and more focused on how very much is being offered me in the loving presence of Jesus, discovered in every part of my

FINDING GOD IN EVERYDAY LIFE (CONTINUED) day, I discover the power of Augustine's prayer: "O Lord, Our God, you have created us for yourself and our hearts are restless until they rest in you." Practice, Practice, Practice Practice makes the difference. What did we ever "get good at" that didn't involve lots of practice? Changing my patterns, my habits, my routines may be difficult, but I know that I am very resilient and quite resourceful when I really want something. Choice is the key. Making the choice to adopt some new patterns allows it to happen. God is always choosing to be with me, in any way, in any situation I will be open to. The choice to get better at meeting God there is all mine. From Online Ministries of Creighton University

PICK UP YOUR THANK YOU NOTE FROM ST. COLUMBANUS CHRISTMAS SHARING FAMILIES We received a package full of thank you notes from the families at St. Columbanus who participated in our Christmas SHaring program. If you adopted a family before Christmas, stop by the Gathering Space to pick up your thank you card. They’ll be organized alphabetically by your last name. Meanwhile, here are two notes we wanted to share with the parish. I can’t even begin to express our gratitude for the immense blessings we received this Christmas. We are very grateful and can’t thank you all enough. You have no idea who we are or our story but you gave from the heart and that is so amazing. We were truly in need and you all went above and beyond. My husband and I are both students and work also and we have fallen on hard times because of this. We recently bought our first home and added a baby boy to our family and were in need of a blessing. You all reminded us that through our struggles, God is with us. Thank you so very much and most of all thank you for your continued prayers. From the Stephens family.

~~~~ I would like to thank you for your generosity during this holiday season. Without you my Christmas wouldn’t be happy. Because of your generous donation, my children will have a beautiful Christmas. May your holiday season be as happy as mine. Thank you once again. From the Jones family.
EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP AT SACRED HEART In thanksgiving we reflect on all the times in the past year that our parishioners have stepped forward to give of their time, their talent and their treasure. We are aware that sometimes good people feel that they are asked, and asked and asked again – all without the efforts they contribute being recognized. Some wonder, “How much more do they expect from me?” We are very grateful for everything that our parishioners do to build our faith community. The true message of stewardship, however, is not about counting volunteer hours, documenting service or establishing giving requirements. It’s not about how much any church expects of its members. It is about the expectations of our God, and our answer to his final question, “What have you done with all that I have given to you?” Stewardship is challenging – challenging each of us to return to the Lord in proportion to the gifts we have received. Stewardship is demanding – often contradicting the powerful influences of our culture. Stewardship is personal – stemming from our individual relationship with God. Most of all Stewardship is rewarding – in this world and the next. This week: As a personal reflection, consider the greatest example of true stewardship: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, so that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16).
Guidelines for Gifting Securities For the convenience of those who wish to donate securities to Sacred Heart, the Church maintains an account relationship with Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, DTC #0015 Account 628-153544-381. If you wish to make a tax-deductible contribution of securities, it is necessary that your securities be transferred to that account to complete the gift. Do not sell the securities while they are still registered in your name, or you will incur the capital gains tax. In order to receive due credit and confirmation for the tax-deductible contribution, it is important to notify Michelle Wasielewski, Business Manager at Sacred Heart (847.446.0856), or Jennifer Huns at Smith Barney at (312.648.3568) of your intentions prior to issuing instructions to your broker. We also have resources available through the Archdiocese of Chicago to assist with estate planning, wills and bequests, as well as planned giving. Throughout the year, your generosity helps keep your parish solvent while at the same time, helps the parish staff to provide a place of worship, education and community. We thank you in advance for your
thoughtful gift which makes it all
