A note from Cantor Rosenblatt Comments from Installation Weekend, November 2-3, 2018

Thank you. Thank you all so much for be-ing here for my Installation Shabbat. I am touched and honored by your presence, as well as your continuous support and en-couragement in my role as your Cantor. Thank you also to all of those who put nu-merous hours behind the scenes to make this installation weekend possible, in-cluding but not limited to the volunteers, staff, and clergy. Your efforts are greatly

appreciated. And of course, thank you to my family and friends, most of whom have traveled far distances to be with us this weekend. You have no idea how much your presence means to me. Temple Beth-El showed me from the moment I arrived how special a place it is. We stick together, we protect each other, and we are there for each other. We need each other now more than ever. In prayer each day we thank Gd for breathing life into us. Modah ani l’fanecha, melech chai vkayam, shechechezarta bi nishmati, bchemla raba emunatecha. We offer thanks to you, everliving Sovereign, that You have restored my soul to me in mercy: How great is Your trust. This life, this breath, we some-times take for granted, it is there within us. Each morning I embrace this moment anew. Tonight I want to acknowledge this breath. I want us all to take a deep breath together for a moment. Close your eyes if you wish. Let go for a moment. Tonight I think about this breath and the way in which I use it for my singing. My breath is at the core of my being, the core of my strength, and my song. I stand here before you with breath to speak, to express my gratitude for your breath, and your ongoing contributions to this community. Since I arrived, actually before I arrived, during my Skype interview, every breath seemed to be conscious and planned. Temple Beth-El impressed me from hour one, with your kind-ness, thoughtfulness, and ability to make me feel at home. Feeling at home allows me to breathe easily. Thank Gd for the breath that flows into me each day. I am able to have conversations with you, listen, and be with you as we experi-ence our prayer together. I am able to be in study and discus-sion with Rabbi Knopf to further this community in creating meaningful Jewish experiences for all. I am able to talk with Faith, Hannah, and Norma about the specifics for the musical program we’re planning. I am able to talk with Ramona about family programming and tefilah for our youth. I am able to be in conversation with our dedicated officers and lay leaders reg-ularly. I am able to do all of this with breath. The gift of air and the soul that has been breathed within me, within us is something I cherish. Tonight, I am feeling each and every breath. Last Shabbat my breath stopped for a moment and this Shabbat, my breath is flowing. This is a moment of great joy for me and for this community, as we embark on a new journey together.

For those of you whom have been a part of this congrega-tion for a lifetime, you know about the deep, rich, and powerful cantorial history that lies here. I am humbled and honored to follow these beloved Cantors of Temple Beth-El. It is a bless-ing to have been chosen to continue the powerful tradition of chazzanut, as well as the opportunity to bring new contempo-rary models of prayer to this sacred kehillah. This is the begin-ning of a relationship, one in which music and prayer becomes the glue that will tie us together. With gratitude and respect, I acknowledge this holy re-sponsibility to be your cantor here at Temple Beth-El. I look forward to singing with you, being with you, and praying with you in the months and years ahead. I pray that the divine shines light on us, and grants us strength, openness, and hope for a bright future together. Thank you for breathing with me, being with me, support-ing me, and being a part of this journey as your cantor. Todah rabbah and Shabbat Shalom.

News from Brown Religious School Ramona Brand, Director of Youth Learning

Mitzvot and Memories were the watchwords through-out the fall semester. Students participated in projects that connected Torah stores with Mitzvot such as Chesed (kindness), Tzar Ba’alei Chayim (care of animals), Rachmones (compassion), Hachnasat Orchim (welcom-ing guests) and Tzedkah. Through creating skits, making get-well cards, crafting Tzedakah boxes and making donations to help the victims at Tree of Life Synagogue,

students connected with important Jewish values. Additional special Chugim activities happened throughout the religious school. The 6th and 7th graders visited Monticello on November 18th. They learned how a Jewish family, (the Levy family) saved and restored Monticello to make it the National Landmark that it is today. Second and Third graders spent the month of November focusing on celebrating Shabbat. They made hand-dyed silk Challah covers ( a BIG thank you to Hannah and Rachel Imburg for leading this project), braided and baked Challah, made Havdalah spice sacks, and made Matzah Ball soup. Students and parents celebrated together at a special “Day of Shabbat” event. Fourth and Fifth Graders became Torah Scribes! After learning how a Torah is made students used feathers and ink to write prayers from Torah. Check out their beautiful handiwork on their hall bulletin board. Kindergarten students learned about being thankful for their healthy, strong and challenged themselves to complete all of the low-ropes in the Nature Center. Our Youth Groups kicked off the year with two great programs that created memories and fun for students and parents. KOACH held a Havdalah mixer for teens and their parents. The teen board planned and led a wonderful evening filled with activities, a potluck dinner and Havdalah service. It’s not clear who had more fun, the teens or the adults! Ruach and Kadima went to the Gallmeyer farm on a crisp fall afternoon where the families enjoyed a haunted hayride, pumpkins and treats. We know there will be plenty more Mitzvot and Memories to make in the months ahead.DONATIONS REQUESTED! Has your child outgrown a beanbag chair, soft cloth kids chair or oversized floor pillow? If yes, please consider donating to the Reli-gious school for our classroom reading corners. over the past year so that he could say kaddish many times for his

beloved mother, Helen Friedman, z”l.

This Year's Torah Fund Pin! Atid is Hebrew for "future." As Women’s League

for Conservative Judaism enters its second centu-ry, Torah Fund begins its 77th year, and the State of Israel enters its 71st year. We look forward with joy to our future together with you, our supporters of To-rah Fund. The 5779 Torah Fund pin

envelopes the Hebrew word for "future" with a stylized Magen David. It represents our wish for a distinctly Jewish future, for ourselves as individu-als, for our families, and our communities. Order this year's Torah Fund pin for $180 from Marian Winer (804-270-7898) and have it ready to wear proudly for Hanukkah! We appreci-ate all contributions of any amount.
