GOSPEL MEDITATION A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE

Today's Gospel is one of tension and contradiction. We enter the scene at the local synagogue. It is near the beginning of Jesus' earthly ministry, and he has returned home to Nazareth for a short while. There, in the midst of the men who watched him grow up and who played with him as a boy in the dusty streets, Jesus proclaims that he is the fulfillment of the Messianic prophecies of Isaiah. The response is understandably mixed. "All spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They also asked, 'Isn't this the son of Joseph?'" Jesus reminds them - none too gently - of the Israelites' rejection of the prophets throughout history. Not only did the people ignore Elijah and Elisha, but they worked mir-acles among the pagans instead. Then comes the rage. "They rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built, to hurl him down headlong." No one likes to be reminded of their own faults. In the deeply religious Jewish society, nobody wanted to be the unfaithful one. Jesus exposes the sins of the com-munity, and it drives them not to conversion, but to rage. We can consider our own time. How often, when some-one is contracted, do they quickly resort to anger, name-calling, and undermining the reputation of the other? How quickly we want to destroy! This Sunday, we ought to consider our own lives. Do we listen to the prophetic voices around us, even when they threaten to upturn our expectations? If we hear something difficult, something that reminds us of our own sin, do we accept the oppor-tunity to prayerfully ponder? If we allow ourselves to be open to the prophetic voices in our own lives, we'll notice that God speaks through the unexpected, if we have ears to hear it.

LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK

No one wants to listen to a prophet, especially when the prophet is someone close to us. We have a hard time accepting that ordinary associations can develop the type and depth of wisdom that can not only positively change lives but profoundly challenge them. To many folks, Jesus was simply the son of Joseph, even though his words caught their attention and amazed them. After his words sunk in, they were infuriated and drove him out of town.

Is Jesus simply the son of Joseph to us as well, or is he the God who knew us before we were formed in the womb?

If he is God, then we need to heed his message and change our lives accordingly.

TIME TO JOIN THE CHOIR! NOW is the BEST time to join the choir. We are about to begin new music and prepare for Lent and the Easter Vigil. Put Wednesday nights 7 PM on your calendar!!! We are happy to have teens through senior singers.

FAMILY CHOIR accepts all ages to sing for the monthly Faith Formation 10:30 Liturgy. We practice the week before Faith Formation Sunday between the Masses (9:30 - 10:00). Simply let Sister Olivia know and she will email you reminders for the practices.

SATURDAY NIGHT SPECIAL: If you would like to see a choir at the 5 PM Saturday Mass, Step forward!! We would love to start an ensemble led by a cantor at that Mass. It depends on YOU!

CANTORS: We are in need of more experienced singers to be Cantors for our Liturgies. This involves singing the Responsorial Psalm and Alleluia verse and announcing the hymns. Teens, if you have sung solo in your high school choir or musicals, please consider this ministry. Rehearsals can be worked out at your conven-ience and you will be given training.

Give Sister Olivia a call or text (440-313-5708) if you are interested in any of these opportunities to share your talent.

The World Youth Day 2019

The group of 23 young people and leaders who went to Panama returned last Monday. The pilgrimage was wonderful. We meet young people from every corner of the world: Asia, Africa, Europe and above all, Latin America. We listen to concerts of catholic music, cat-echesis, and Discourses of the Holy Father. We at-tended almost every day and participated in a vigil with Pope Francis. Despite the heat, we enjoyed the experience of being part of the Catholic Church that is universal. Pope Francis asked us to go from there to our home countries to be missionaries of mercy and hope. The world needs the hope that young people can bring to it, the Pope said. We appreciate the help of all those who made this pilgrimage possible and we hope that it will bear fruit abundantly in the heart of each pilgrim.
