Te National rans-portation Sa ety Board is a

very serious governmentagency that does thingslike investigate accidentsand tell us all how tonot get in them. Andapparently despite that, even they can’t escape making aDeate-gate joke. “For serious ootball ans, the two weeks be orethe Super Bowl are normally a time o buildinganticipation. Tey’re a minute-by-minute maelstromo media analysis and party planning leading up to thegame itsel , the pinnacle o pigskin, thene plus ultra othe NFL. It’s the grown-up version o what kids eel onChristmas Eve or the night be ore their birthdays – or14 days. Tis year the big story is “Deate-Gate.” Storieslike “Why the media are overinating the ootball ap”and “Scientists Say the NFL’s ‘Deate-Gate’ Isn’t All HotAir“ ll our televisions, monitors, and newspapers. Every ootball junkie now knows (and neither knewnor cared to know be ore January 19) that ootballsshould be inated to between 12.5 and 13.5 pounds persquare inch, and that a crew o officials is charged withinspecting each ootball be ore a game to ensure thatthey are properly inated. Te message that the N SB was delivering is animportant one: Planning a party or hardcore ans? Ask them whatthe NFL ound out about the ootballs in “Deate-Gate.” Tey’ll probably tell you without missing a beatthat 11 o the 12 New England Patriots’ balls tested wereunderinated by two pounds per square inch.

Ten ask them when they last checked the pressureo the tires on their vehicles. According to the National Highway raffic Sa etyAdministration, drivers in the United States put morethan 2.9 billion miles on their tires annually. And,there are nearly 11,000 tire-related crashes that claimnearly 200 lives each year. Many o these crashes can beprevented through proper tire maintenance, which, youguessed it, includes proper tire ination! But it’s also a sure sign that Deate-gate has gonetoo ar. Tis week has been one or the ages.
