E-Safety ForumNorth Ealing Primary School

Context• It has become clear that some pupils in Y6 (and possibly elsewhere in the

school) are sending/receiving inappropriate texts/images on their phones. The habit handing in of phones at school has become lax (although the pupils DO know the rules). This has been dealt with.

• There has been an increase in sexual language/gestures among some pupils in the playground and, in one reported case, towards a teacher ( behind their back).

• Several parents have expressed concern about the playing of PEGI 18 rated games at the homes of friends (inc GTA5).

• Pupils playing ‘Clash of Clans’, have been sending inappropriate texts/messages whilst playing. There is evidence that their ‘clan’ is being accessed by outsiders. This has been addressed and those concerned have said that they would develop new ‘rules’.

• The media is now awash with reports of cyber-bullying/ sexting/ violence arising from games etc.

• As a school, NES, follows stringent safety precautions and is rated ‘significantly above average’ in terms of e-safety education and safeguarding. However, it is clear that we still have some way to go. Sadly, we CANNOT control what happens outside of school or what pupils bring in to school. Related to this is the sharing of ’50 Shades of Grey’ among some of the Year 6 girls.

• These pupils are about to enter a FAR less protected environment. They ‘know’ about e-safety but ‘it will never happen to them’. This meeting is to address the parents of such pupils and help them take the upper hand in the safeguarding of ALL pupils in the community.

• Get rid of the web? Impossible• Get rid of the ‘spiders’? Impossible.• Educate the flies...?

That is our intention.
