Epiphany of The Lord - January 5, 2020

Reflecting on the Gospel

[Living Liturgy, Spirituality, Celebration, and Catechesis for Sundays and Solemnities 2020, Liturgical Press, Col-

legeville, MN]

The story of the Epiphany, or the visitation of the magi, is told only in Matthew’s Gospel, but like many

other elements of the Nativity story, we’ve likely combined our knowing the story (from Matthew’s point of

view) with that of Luke’s Gospel account; because both Gospels are proclaimed at various celebrations through-

out the Christmas Season.

Matthew’s Gospel – writing to a primarily Jewish Christian audience – makes some pertinent theological

points. He doesn’t reference a number when it comes to these visitors from the East, but that they are non-Jews,

in other words, Gentiles and for Matthew these Gentiles coming to worship Jesus prefigures the conclusion of his

Gospel when the risen Lord will give the commandment to the 11 disciples to go out to all the nations (meaning

to the Gentiles), teaching them and baptizing them. Matthew doesn’t mention these visitors from the east as

kings either; but as magi (which was a class of priests from Persia- modern-day Iran). The gifts they bring, how-

ever, do represent royalty, so that’s perhaps why we picture these visitors from the East to be kings. Another

pertinent theological point is that the magi “saw the child with Mary his mother.” Remember, King Herod or-

dered the slaughter of all male children based on when the star initially appeared.

So what does the story tell us or rather, teach us today? The magi represent all those who are not part

of the “in” crowd. Rather, these foreigners who do not know Jesus come to worship him before anyone else.

They recognize the signs of nature that something significant has happened and they seek it out, teaching us to

look up and look beyond and see!

ing, hope for endurance and mercy in the midst of trial and happiness. Enter the journey this New Year 2020

with a (perfect) vision of desire: desire to live in the Light of the Lord by offering your presents – your presence

at weekly Mass, at Worship, at Devotions, at Meetings, at School, at Work, on the field, in the store, at the mar-

ket; desire to reveal the Light of the Lord by your presence and peace.

Happy New Year!

Many THANKS for your GENEROSITY and CHARITY in the Christmas and Holiday Collections! May

your kindness be returned a hundredfold. Happy New 2020 Year!

Mother Teresa

“The Treasure I have...”

The treasure I have, I want to give to you,

but I cannot. I can pray for you that you

may have the courage to receive it, because

faith is a gift of God, that great gift of God

that he has given to us in Holy Communion, to satisfy

our hunger, because we have been created in the image

of god.

Excerpted from: Love: A Fruit Always in Season Daily Meditations by Mother

Teresa (Ignatius Press 1987)

Family Perspective

Herod was frightened of Jesus. He feared Jesus would

replace him and he would lose control. In families fear

appears when we are threatened by what is out of our

control. We fret but it does us no good. Give these

situations to the Lord and let Him lead us like He led the

Magi.

In Your Charity

In your charity, please remember the

repose of the souls of Elizabeth Molnar,

Robert Miles and Ray Ilko.

May they rest in eternal peace.

Music Ministry & Liturgy Notes

By Angela Kovic

Director of Music and Liturgy

EUREKA!

The word ‘epiphany’ is defined in the dictionary as a

moment of sudden revelation. It comes from the

Greek verb ‘phainein,’ which was used to describe

the appearance of a deity to humankind. What a

perfect word to describe how the three wise men felt

when they followed a bright star, based on the pre-

diction of a prophet long ago, and actually found

the new King of Jerusalem in the feed trough of a

barn. What an amazing show of faith, and to be

rightfully rewarded! In a way, we are the magi of

this century. We have heard the stories and read the

prophecies from those long ago, and now it is our

turn to have faith that we will see Jesus’ second com-

ing. Are you keeping your eyes open so that you will

be ready when he returns? Even the faith of a mus-

tard seed can move mountains, so don’t let your

heart waiver in your love for our Lord and King!

On another note, this Sunday the 5th is Devin and

my first wedding anniversary! It’s amazing how fast a

year has gone, and what a beautiful year it has been!

I couldn’t be happier where I am in life right now.

Music Ministry Is a very special addition to Mass at St. Mary. Music is played before Mass, ac-companies the Assembly at Mass and inspires us to worship faithfully.

Cantors: Sing the Responsorial Psalm, the Gospel Acclama-tion and lead Mass parts. Must audition for this position and Cantors are used throughout the year at Weekend Masses, Holy Days and Special Celebrations.

Adult Traditional Choir: In session from Labor Day through Pentecost Sunday. Choir practice is held on Tues-days from 7:30pm - 9:00pm. To join, you must be an adult or at least high school age. It would be helpful (but not required) if choir members can read music. Our Adult Choir sings at 9:30am Mass and for all holy days and special Masses

Youth Choir: Currently NOT in session, but can be with enough interest! Open to all students from 5th grade through 8th grade in the Day School and PSR Program. The Youth choir sings at the 11:30am Mass on Sundays and Holy Days (as scheduled) and Youth Choir practice is held on Tuesdays from 3:30pm to 6:30pm.

Funeral Choir/Ministry: Welcome and greets families at Funerals, ushers, serves and sings at all Funeral Masses held at St. Mary. Senior Adults are Needed for this Ministry as Greeters, Ushers, Servers and small-group Choir Contact: Angela Kovic: [email protected]

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a

blessed and restful Christmas and I wish all

of you a happy and healthy 2020.

Please mark your calendars for Catholic

Schools Week, which will be celebrated

events for the students and their families. Catholic

Schools Week will conclude with the SMS PTO Family

Dance/Ice Cream Social in the school gym on Friday,

January 31st. Watch the bulletin & your emails for

more information about Catholic Schools Week that

will be sent out later this month.

Just before the students Christmas break, Mrs. Dober’s

Kindergarten class outfitted their Dash robots with rein-

deer costumes. The children used Block Coding to pro-

gram their Dash robot to drive to a picture of a house

that was placed in the classroom so Santa could deliver

the presents. The students also meas-

ured the path it needed to take and

then put the distance into the code.

They also added jingle bells and other

Christmas sounds. Quite impressive

for five year olds!!
