“He certainly is awell-balanced horse, with an excellent pedi-gree. We were delightedto get such a brilliantfirst foal,” said Alex.

Although we have neverhad a call to rescueSanta from a chimney,we do receive many callsto birds that have gotthemselves stuck.
These days many fire-places are either boardedup or they have an elec-tric or gas fire standingin front of them, butwith the chimneys stillopen to the elementsthere is still the risk thata bird will somehow endup inside it.
We have on occasionshad to deal with seriousburns when an open firehas been alight and abird has come down thechimney into it, but amajority of the calls weget are to rescue one thatis trapped behind aboard or a gas fire.
Where a gas applianceis involved, the house-holder has to call out aqualified engineer tomove the fire before wecan do anything for thepoor bird.
Our most recent chim-ney rescue involved astarling that didn’t getstuck, but came straightout into the homeown-er’s front room.
In these cases weusually ask the person toopen as many windowsas possible and leave thebird to find its own wayout.
Unfortunately thislady had a phobia ofbirds and couldn’t gointo the room while thebird was there, so one ofour Care Assistants wentout to catch the starling
and release it outside.Another rescue was to
a tawny owl that hadcome down a chimneyinto an empty house.
Builders had beenworking in the housebut hadn’t been there forseveral days and, judg-ing by the mess insidethe house, shredded netcurtains and soot allover the place, theunfortunate owl hadbeen trapped for a longtime.
After a good bath anda few days with plenty offood, the owl was fitenough to be releasedback into the same area,
with advice to thehouseholder to get the
chimney capped to pre-vent this happeningagain!
A simple piece ofmesh over the top of thechimney can preventthese incidents, saving alot of stress to the birdsinvolved and oftenexpense for the resident.

This month’s walk, although short, offersthe opportunity toobserve a plethora ofwildlife - and you mayneed to allow more timethan you think!
Park your vehicle inthe car park to the rearof the village hall. Leavethe car park, cross theroad and turn left alongthe lane (1). Take careas you walk for the firstfive-ten minutes as thereis no footway and trafficis quite busy at times.
You will pass a cot-tage on the opposite sideof the road, then as theroad bends sharply tothe left, look for a laneon the right (SP: BredonHill). (2). Go along thislane towards some farmbuildings. After passinga sunken barn on theright, the lane enters afarm yard. Ignore theturning to the left (whichascends Bredon Hill)and walk ahead betweenthe barns (3). At the endof the yard, bear right
down the lane and passCourt Farm house onyour right (4). This wasformerly the home of thecelebrated author of chil-dren’s books, UrsulaMoray-Williams.
Walk on down thelane until you reach theedge of a copse.
Go up the steps on theleft (5) in the gapbetween two fence poststo enter Beckford NatureReserve. Follow the pathdown the timber steps tothe lake side. At the bot-tom, turn left and carryon around the lake. (6).
A short distance fur-ther on, you will come toa hide on your right.
This affords an excel-lent view over the water:resident birds includemallard, coot, moorhead, tufted duck anddabchicks (little grebe) -you may hear the dis-tinctive call of the latter.Canada geese, swansand greylags are alsoseasonal visitors.
For many years the
reserve was used as asand and gravel quarry.Note the bank on the leftjust past the hide, whichhas been colonised bymore seasonal visitors -sand martins - which area delight to behold inspring.
Rabbits have takenover some of the bur-rows!
Follow the path fromthe hide towards thegate, and bear right up aslope to carry on aroundthe lake. (7). (To visitBeckford Silk, carry onthrough the gate, crossthe road, and follow thesigns opposite.)
Carrying on, you willemerge through the treesinto a small orchard.
(8). Bear right and gothrough the gate at theend, keeping the lake toyour right. Pass anotherhide (right) and a house(on the left), until youcome to a kissing gate.(9). Go through the gateand turn left. Follow thelane past another pondbehind a stone wall.
Look for a narrowpath on the left (X) andtake this to reach thechurchyard.
Follow the path pastthe church (which is wellworth a visit) and gothrough the lychgate.
Turn right (Y) andfollow the road to thevillage cross, then bearright to return to the vil-lage hall.

Previously stamp dutywas payable on thewhole price of the prop-erty purchase. Under thenew rules the system issimilar to the wayincome tax is calculatedand the banded ratesonly apply within eachband. For example, for aproperty sold at£265,000 the old stampduty cost would havebeen £7,950. Now underthe new rules, stampduty will cost £3,250,saving buyers a whop-ping £4,700!
Many sellers whohave been resistant toselling their home fear-ing that they would notachieve over £250,000can confidently markettheir home for its truermarket value. In thesame way, many buyerscan now add more totheir deposit and possi-bly have more to spend!
Commented WendyBeckley, Director ofEngall Castle Ltd, “Thisis a very exciting devel-opment within the prop-erty market and alreadywe have seen more buy-ers registering for prop-erty details. The newsarrives at a great time

The traffic-free post card published heredates from around 1900, writes John Dixonof Tewkesbury Historical Society.
The Black Bear changes little and MytheRow, now homes, has maintained its medievalaspect.
Northend House, however, suffered terriblyin that fire and is no longer the home ofwealthy wine merchants, as it once was.
By 1924 the elm tree at the cross-roads wasdeclared “rotten at the root” and it has sincebeen replaced with a London Plane tree.
Then a newspaper article reported that“Many of our older readers remember when thestocks for the punishment of malefactors werein existence at the foot of the tree”.
Recent damage to community assets won-ders if historic justice might have been moreeffective! What has happened to these stocks? They have disappeared.
They were witnessed by the later BrianLinnell when, as a boy, he learned stamp col-lecting from Bertie Gray, the occupier of thatimpressive house.
Years later, when collecting artefacts for theTown’s Museum, he noted that slips of paperremained inscribed ‘Removed by B.C. Gray’.Clearly Gray, then a renowned local historian, had removed many artefacts. Linnell recalledthat “one pensioner recalled that the stocks hadbeen taken to Mr. Gray's cellar”.
That is now the cellar of the Black Bear but arecent licensee claimed that it has been blockedup. Are the stocks still entombed there andmay we have them back?
John Dixon

The LastRunaway
by Tracey ChevalierPB £7.99
For a good story wovenaround well researchedhistorical events,Tracey Chevalier alwaysdoes the trick, and herlatest title ‘The LastRunaway’, is no excep-tion.
Honor Bright emigratesin the 1850’s from asheltered Quakerupbringing in Dorset tothe free state of Ohioand the many newchallenges and perspec-tives that she will haveto deal with.
Life in America turnsout to be different towhat she had imag-ined. She makes anunlikely friendship out-side the Quaker com-munity in the spiritedBelle, a hatmaker andbecomes involved withthe UndergroundRailroad which pro-vides an escape net-work for slaves fromthe southern states toCanada, the only realplace of safety.
Although Ohio is a freestate, slave hunters arealways a threat andmany runaways arecaptured and sent back.Neither can everyonebe trusted, as there aresympathisers on bothsides.
The constant inHonor’s life is quiltmaking and the sewingshe undertakes forBelle and this in turnhighlights the relianceof the textile industryin the northern stateson the cotton producingslave states and thepolitical decisions onabolition.

Director of local family firm Cotteswold Dairies,Roger Workman, has been collecting milk relatedmemorabilia for about thirty years.
MEMORIES FROM TEWKESBURY’S FORMER DAIRY FARMS
The collection includes afine collection of deliv-ery vehicles that spanthe last century, churns, bottle washers, fillingmachines and of coursehundreds of milk bot-tles.Here is a glimpse of
his collection, but thebottles are of specialinterest as many arelocal coming from longgone dairies, they giveus an insight into thehive of activity whichbrought the daily pint tothe doors in days goneby.Of special interest,
Roger has two bottlesfrom the Royal Dairy atWindsor. Prince Albertbuilt the dairy for QueenVictoria. As there wasno refrigeration in thosedays, the dairy faced
north and cold waterfountains were installedthat acted as natural aircooling devices. The dairy was started
by Harry Workman in1932 on CotteswoldRoad near the centre ofTewkesbury. Harry stillhas a watchful eye overthe business that nowserves vast areas ofEngland and Wales.

With itshead office located in Twyning, Nr Tewkesbury Aquatots provide classes sevendays a week throughout Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire and theWest Midlands. All babies are born with a natural ability to swim and have a real affinity with
water. Babies lack the strength and co-ordination to swim above the water untilthey are about three so Aquatots teaches your baby to swim using fun and safesub surface techniques without the use of buoyancy aids. The Aquatots programme has been developed over many years and now
offers nine levels of ability starting at Duckling level. Babies can start anAquatots course from as young as eight weeks (and they do!) and can carry onthrough the levels to school age.Aquatots are delighted to be offering Duckling
Starter Courses at the newly refurbishedTewkesbury Pool School from February 2014.Classes are also taught at Tewkesbury Park Hoteland twelve further locations in Gloucestershire. For more information or to book on a FREE

Many gardens have pilesof wood or branches thathave been set aside andneed to be put in a skipor cut into useful sizedblocks for a fire. The next step maybe
to choose a chainsaw, they are so affordablethese days for justdomestic use, an electricchainsaw will tacklemost things and theyusually start at £60.00.A petrol chainsaw can beused anywhere and startfrom around £80.00.Before using the saw
the instructions for useand safety must be wellread and protectiveclothing, includinggloves and ear defendersare a must.A saw horse can be
made or purchased quitecheaply and will beinvaluable in speedingup the cutting process.Greenwood, as a rule,
needs to be stored to dryas this will increase theheat output. A moisturemeter can be used to testthe moisture content ofthe wood and for bestresults should be below20%.Ashwood is a great
burner as it burns welleven when green.Redundant construction-
al timber can be cut andburnt but care should betaken if there are anyscrews or nails in it aswhen hit they will bluntthe saw instantly. Alsoavoid burning treatedwood as it can releasetoxins into the air.Chainsaw sharpening
is fairly simple using afile and saw guide get-
ting your chain back intopeak performance. Saving money on fire-
wood is a long term ben-efit when you areequipped to cut it, some-thing worth consideringperhaps? For further details

I would once again inviteyou to review the securi-ty of your home.
Many families willhave bought expensiveitems over the Christmasperiod new bikes, com-puters mobile telephonesetc.
Burglars are aware ofthis so follow the belowtips to keep your homeand property safe.
DoorsDoors are the primaryroute of entry and exitfor most burglars, so it’svital you secure themeffectively.
You can improvehome security by mak-ing simple adjustmentsto your frontdoor:ie:,ensure you haveadequate locks andsecurity fittings.
• The door should be fit-ted with a five levermortise deadlock.• Ensure that the frameis strong and will sup-port the door, hinges andlock.• Make sure the door issuitable for external useand is a minimum of45mm thick.• Letterboxes shouldhave an internal coverplate.• For additional safetyand security fit a spyhole and door chain.• Do not leave housekeys in or near the dooras they can get removedthrough the letterbox.
WindowsWindows are often usedas either an entry or exitroute for burglars.Properties with windowsleft open or unsecuredlocks are a target for theopportunist burglar.• Remember to close andlock all your windows, even if you are onlygoing out for a few min-utes.• Windows on theground floor and inaccessible areas shouldbe made of toughenedglass or doubled glazed.• Make sure windowsare fitted with a goodlock appropriate for thewindow type.• Avoid leaving valu-ables, house or car keysnear windows.
Bogus callersNot all burglars breakinto homes - some willtry to trick or con theirway in.
They are known asbogus callers and willpretend to be on officialbusiness fromrespectable concernssuch as the Utility
Companies - Gas,Electricity and Water - orthe Council. They mayclaim to be tradesmen orworkmen calling to carryout urgent repairs.
Bogus callers succeedbecause they soundbelievable, so don't befooled. Make sure inyour own mind that theyare whom they claim tobe by following thesesimple steps:• Think before you openthe door - use yourchain and spy hole orlook out of the windowto see if you recognizethem.• Ask callers for proof ofidentity. Genuine trades-men should carry anidentification card withtheir photograph on.
Check this carefully. Ifyou are unsure, tele-phone the company thecaller claims to repre-sent.• The Utilities now offera password identifica-tion system. Any callerfrom one of these com-panies should be able togive a pre-arrangedpassword as additionalproof of identity.• Beware of callers whoattempt to distract youby claiming that theyhave seen somethinguntoward in your reargarden or somewherewhich may encourageyou to leave your house- they may have anaccomplice awaiting thisdistraction.• If you are not con-vinced of the identity ofthe caller, don't let themin. Ask the caller tocome back later andarrange for a friend, rel-ative or neighbour to bepresent on their returnor ask the caller to con-tact this person.
Property marking• Marking your propertyis a quick and effectiveway of protecting yourproperty. It will make itless attractive to thievesto steal it in the firstplace as they know thatmarked property can beeasily identified by thepolice .• In addition, the trace-able property may bemore difficult for them to'cash in' with anothercriminal or to a willingpurchaser of the item.
Of course it alsogreatly enhances thechances of you being re-united with the itemwhich is important too.Police Sgt Henry Wright

ROOFING
A recipe fora HappyNew YearTake twelve fine, full grown months; see thateach one is totally free from old memories of bit-terness, rancour and hate, writes counsellor andtherapist David Slater.
Now is the time tocleanse them completelyfrom every clingingspite.
Pick off all the specksof pettiness and little-ness. in short, see thatthe twelve monthsahead are freed from allthe negatives of the pastwhich will only hold youback given the chance.
Let the months befresh and clean as whenthey first came from thegreat storehouse ofTime. Cut these monthsinto equal parts.
Do not attempt tomake up the wholebatch at one time (somany people spoil thewhole lot this way).
It is far better thatyou simply prepare oneday at a time.
Into each day putequal parts of faith, patience, courage, work. There are people wholike to omit the workelement but really thishas so much to give usin a wide variety ofways.
Mix equal quantitiesof hope, fidelity, liberali-ty and understandingand kindness.
Also make sure thereis ample rest. Leavingthis out is akin to leav-ing the oil out of salad
dressing and spoils thewhole experience.
Let there be time topray, meditate, thinkand the ability to makedecisions.
Put in about one tea-spoonful of good spirits,a dash of fun, a pinch offolly, a sprinkling of playand a heaped cupful ofgood humour!
Remember that theNew Year is, as it opens,an unspoiled page inyour own personal bookof Time.
Things that yousought and didn't find inthe past may well bewaiting for you in 2015.
All the good you triedto do and didn't achievemay actually beachieved at last if youstrive forward positively.
All that you dreamedof but for some reasondidn't dare to do. All youhoped but did not man-age. All these thingsmay be waiting for youin 2015.
Your New Year is fullof New Opportunity.May it bring you Healthand Happiness, Peaceand Prosperity and theindividual things thatyou seek to achievegiven this new start.
David Slater
