My overwhelming gratitude to all of you who have surrounded me with your love and caring since my husband Phil died on November 3. I have never understood what it meant to have a “church family” as I do now. I will never be able to thank enough all of you who brought food, worked at the reception, came to the memorial service, sent cards, prayed for me, and just have showed me the love of Christ during this entire time; I will try to “pay it forward” and be that loving Christian friend to others that you have been for me. ~Cindy Brandt

Dear friends in faith:We are so grateful for the many prayers lifted up by members of the Oak Hill UMC family for our daughter, Teresa Talley, over the past several months. It has been quite a struggle for her, her husband and their sons, but we wanted you to know that she’s now doing reasonably well. We are confident in the Lord that the many prayers offered on her behalf resulted in a return to a healthier place for her. However, the family continues to need those prayers. Thanks for keeping both Dave and me in your prayers, as well. May the peace and love of the new year be given to you and yours many times over.God bless you always, in all ways... ~Lynn Sampsell

A letter from the Medical Director of the U.M.C. Kissy Clinic in Sierra Leone, Africa:

To Pastor Jim and the Oak Hill Mission Team,Christmas season is the perfect time to show friends, family, brethren in Christ and those around you how much you appreciate them. Thus, as we come to the end of another year, I want, on behalf of the UMC General Hospital, Kissy, Freetown, Sierra

Leone, to thank all of you who have contributed to our success in the past. You have touched and made an indelible difference in so many lives through our healing ministry at Kissy. We therefore wish you all the blessings that come with the birth of Christ and may peace, joy and laughter fill your Christmas season and new year. This comes with blessings and love from all of us at Kissy. Thank you.~Dennis H. Marke, MD, Medical Director

A special thank you to all who helped purchase & deliver gifts along with sharing God’s love with the children from the Angel Tree Prison Ministry - we delivered gifts to just over 100 children this year. Your time, effort, and love did make a difference.

Calum James Martin and Elle Irene Martin were baptized on December 23, 2012 at the Pathways service. Their parents are Joanne and Zachary Martin.

Join the Haiti Mission TripA mission trip to Haiti has been scheduled through United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM) on April 6-13, 2013, which is one week after Easter. (Easter is March 31, 2013.) Haiti is still recovering from the devastating earthquake that occurred on January 12, 2010. UMVIM, in collaboration with Eglise Methodiste d’Haiti, is entering the third and final year of its Haiti Response Plan. The Plan has identified priority projects for earthquake recovery and other church and social needs that can be addressed by UMVIM teams. While priority projects have focused on construc-tion, other opportunities to be involved in the local communities exist, such as English as a second language, music, working with children, and computer training. UMVIM’s theme is Christian Love in Action, which says it all. This is a wonderful opportunity to participate in a ministry of recon-ciliation by moving yourself and others closer to glorifying God. The team will be led by Jon Nelson, who went to Haiti in February 2011 and April 2012. For more information, please contact Jon at 512-288-2764 or by email at [email protected].

Habitat for Humanity Spring Methodist Build & Pancake Breakfast

It was a great Christmas season and now it is pancake season! The next fund-raiser is our pancake breakfast at Applebee’s on March 2. This is a lot of fun and is a great way to raise funds for the Methodist Build. Watch for tickets sales between services in February on the patio or in the Fellowship Hall. Great fun for Sunday school classes and other groups. Tickets will be $10 each, and we get to keep $5 for each person that shows up for pancakes ($10 for those who don’t cash in their tickets). You must buy tickets in advance; no ticket sales at the door. Breakfast includes pancakes, scrambled eggs, Eggs Benedict, sausage, bacon, hash browns, juice, and coffee. What a deal! If you cannot make it to the breakfast and miss the ticket sales, you can always place a check in the offering basket any Sunday; make the check out to OHUMC and put Habitat for Humanity in the memo line. We can always use prayers for the success of the fundraising and the build. Call Jerry Morford at 301-3738 or send him an e-mail at [email protected] if you have questions about the Methodist Build or the pancake breakfast.

On behalf of the ladies of Oak Hill that make up the Hugs Project of Austin (Oak Hill UMW), I am pleased and excited to advise you that today, December 29, 2012, a Certificate of Appreciation was presented to me as a representative of the Hugs Project by Lt. Mark Richardson, U.S. Army, Charlie Company, 1-30th Infantry Battalion. This presentation was a surprise, but very much treasured by all of our ladies. Lt. Richardson, the son of Austin lawyer Jim Richardson, just returned from a 9-month tour in Afghanistan. Our project has been working for the troops for nearly 10 years. ~Sandy Wilkenson

“CREATED BY GOD” JAnuARY 10-13Created By God is our annual human sexuality seminar for fifth and sixth-graders and parents. Once again we will be joined this year by our friends from Dripping Springs UMC. Created By God offers young people the opportunity to

learn, grow, and celebrate the fact that we have each been wonderfully created by God and are called to responsible living as sexual beings. It is a United Methodist curriculum and our team of parents, teach-ers, nurses, and clergy has taught together for a long time. More information and registra-tion forms are available in the Children’s Building or by emailing Ms. Suzanne at [email protected]. Online readers click here for downloadable .pdf forms.

Each year, many youth from Oak Hill take a break from their busy schedules to go to MidWinter Retreat, an event put on by the Southwest Texas Conference of the Methodist Church. It has become a huge part of our winter and has acted as a springboard to so much more. More involvement in youth, a deeper sense of mission outreach-es, has had the most impact in the lives of our students of anything we do. This year, we are again making plans to go to MidWinter. The cost is $110 per student. There are scholarships available at the Conference, District, and church level (please email or text me if you need a scholarship - we do not want cost to be a factor). This weekend will be full of worship, preaching, free time, great friendships, good food, and plenty of fun. I hope you will make plans for your student to join us! The dates are:- Middle School - Feb 1-3 @ Mt. Wesley- High School - Feb 15-18 @ Echo Valley (near Leakey)We will provide transportation. The easiest way to sign up is to register online at www.reachingyouth.org/midwinter.html. After you register, please let Dave know so we can make arrange-ments for vehicles, at [email protected].

Important Info about Midwinter MissionMidwinter Mission is a unique retreat in which participants will explore the issues of hunger, experience a “Homeless Day Experiment”, and discover what life is like for someone living on the streets of a city. Participants will also have awesome times of worship, attend a worship service at the Annual Conference Called Session at University UMC (just to let them know we have youth in our churches!) and enjoy times of fellowship and community. Each camper attending MW Mission is asked to bring a loaf of bread, and a jar of peanut butter and jelly. Each church group is asked to bring two cases of water. Lastly, anyone want-ing to donates coats or blankets can do so and bring them to either Midwinter 1, the Conference Office in San Antonio, or Midwinter Mission for them to be distributed to the homeless.

What To Bring & Medications PolicyPlease bring bedding, personal toiletries, warm clothes, pennies for Youth Service Fund and a Bible. It is best not to bring iPods, food, jewelry, or money. (Although some bands will be selling merchandise.) All cell phones need to stay in vehicles and remain off during retreat. Medications should be in their original container provided by the pharmacy. All students will need to pick up their meds on the last day of camp. Leftover meds will be thrown away.

Welcome to the Revolution! No longer do we need to chase the dream of God’s revolution of love – for the

revolution of God’s Kingdom is among us. the revolution isn’t something that will come in the future,

because the revolution is already here. (However, it’s our call to respond and to live in the mo-

ment as disciples of Jesus Christ!)

Many thanks to all of my church family who supported my pajama mission this year! Thanks to all of you I collected almost

400 pairs of pajamas for kids in need right here in Austin!!! Blessings to each of you!

~Eleanor Hemenway

Disciple 1 Reflections

First we read through the Old TestamentAnd honestly weren’t really sure what it meant.

We studied creation and our history of sin;We saw all the lands where our ancestors have been.

From endless wandering on vast desert plainsTo days and days and more days of rains.

A bush that was burning and rules carved in stone – There were pleas for forgiveness and attempts to atone.Trying to learn who begat whom – and then more,

Was a task well beyond my memory store. Then there’s judges, kings and prophets throughout

To guide and enforce all these rules, no doubt. But Moses and Abraham and Elijah we know – From these men our Christian family did grow.

But sadly God realized that overwhelming sinWould surely do His beloved people in.

So on to the New Testament our studies did leadWhere we learned how much God’s grace we did need.

First came the books that rejoice Jesus’ birth,Filling the world with much joy and great mirth.

So Jesus was born and became God as a manTo teach and to lead all over the land.

God’s plan was in place – a great sacrifice. He sent us His son, only to give up his life.

While He was here Jesus was tempted for sure,But His example to us was to stay very pure.

His followers were many but only a few that he choseTo be His disciples – God’s plan to disclose.

He guided and nurtured and at times reprimandedTo ensure all was done that God had commanded.

So now it’s our turn to spread the Good NewsTo all who will listen – God’s grace we can’t lose! This class has been long but so good for our souls

And it’s opened our eyes and met one of MY goals.There’s much more to learn, more classes take;

But for now I will process, and enjoy a long break. The fellowship was so valuable – the sharing so dear.

The leaders did try the muddy waters to clear.Thank you - our leaders – your time you did give.

The better we’ll be while our lives we do live.

Disciple I and Disciple II classes will be offered at OHUMC in late January. This is a wonderful opportunity to grow in your

journey of discipleship. Pastors Pam Sheffield and Stella Burkhalter are the facilitators.
