The 2014 football season for the Glasgow Scotties was memorable and made a lasting impression on many both in and outside the community, even though the team may have fell short of the goals and expectations for the players, coaches and community. That being said, the Scotty football team officially concluded the

2014 season with their annual football banquet prior to the Christmas break and Head Coach, Greg Liebelt, spoke about a letter received from a playoff opponents family, in-addition to the teams accomplishments. These accomplishments consist of: outscoring their eleven opponents by nearly 300 points, 384 to 86;

producing eight separate 1st Team All-Conference selections this season on offense, defense and special teams (Chase Fossum, Jason Thibault, Tanner Roness, Dallas Capdeville, Wyatt Pattison, Benji Phillips, Jake Page and Cache Younkin) and seven separate 2nd Team All-Conference selections

Final Havre-area check station findings for 2014 tabulated The final results are in at Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Havre check station for the 2014 hunting season. Overall, hunter numbers and big-game harvest were down. “In general, big game harvest was slower this year,” said Havre-area wildlife biologist Scott Hemmer. “This is likely due in part to the elimination of all Region 6 deer B licenses and buck-only harvest on the A-tag for mule deer. The weather this year also may have affected harvest. It was unseasonably warm at the beginning of the season, which may have reduced game sightings, and then was extremely cold at the end of the year, which reduced hunter numbers.” Hunter numbers were down only 4 percent from 2013, but are still down 26 percent from long-term average. “Another factor why hunter numbers and harvest were down when compared to long-term averages is that deer and antelope numbers are still below normal,” Hemmer noted. The hard winter of 2010-2011, which reduced antelope and mule deer populations in the region, is still showing its effect. In addition, epizootic hemmorhagic disease outbreaks in 2011-2013 impacted white-tailed deer numbers. “While game numbers for these species are recovering, they are still below the long-term average in many areas,” Hemmer said. The antelope harvest more than doubled from 2013, but is still 81 percent below the long-term average. The mule deer harvest was 59 percent below average and white-tailed deer was 77 percent below. Elk harvest was down 28 percent from the long-term average. On a positive note, upland bird and waterfowl numbers appeared to be up based on results from the Havre check station. “Pheasants, sharp-tailed grouse, and Hungarian partridge harvest were all up from last year, and all but pheasant were above the long-term average,” Hemmer said. “Hunter reports for these species were consistently positive.”

Belly Bump ChampsAfter a couple of seriously competitive but fun days of hoops in Hinsdale this past New Year’s Day and January 2nd, a team comprised of former Raiders players from 2008-2010 emerged as the Belly Bump champions. They are, left to right, Kirk Capdeville, Mikel Erickson, Greg Lacock, Nate Remmich, Chase Younkin and Chisolm Christensen, who unfortunately sprained an ankle in the first game they played on Thursday. “We had a really good turnout this year, way up from last year,” Levi Capdeville was happy to report. Levi and Nate Remmich revived the Belly Bump in 2013 after a Belly Bump hiatus. Looks like it’s going strong again and that’s good as proceeds help to fund the annual Hinsdale 4th of July Fireworks. Pictured at right is three-point shooting champion Cody Palm. Proceeds raised from the 3-point contest went to the Raiders Booster Club and will purchase new basketball rims. And at lower right was the old-timer of the Belly Bump, Duane Mattfeldt. He doesn’t look like a day over 30!

(Ryan Scanlan, Jake Hentges, Parker Kulzcyk, Kyle Humbert, Zach Miller and Ethan Etchart); this years’ Senior class produced five separate All-State individuals over the past two seasons, including Thibault, Fossum, Krumwiede, Ronness and Capdeville; four Class “B” All-Star Game selections (Fossum, Thibault, Roness, Capdeville) who will represent the Scotties in Billings; while the Montana East-West Shrine Game selected Chase Fossum at receiver and alternates Jason Thibault (QB) and Keil Krumwiede (TE) to represent the East this summer in Great Falls. This years’ Seniors helped contribute to a 19-3 overall record the past two seasons with Semi-Final and Quarter-Final finishes in the State Class “B” playoffs. Offensively, All-State Quarterback Thibault, the future MSU-Billings Yellow Jacket baseball signee, set new school records for passing, all-purpose yards and TD’s. Jason had 1,706 yards passing this season and a total of 3,111 yards passing yards the past two seasons, along with 337 yard rushing this season and a total of 628 rushing yards the past two seasons for combined an all-purpose yardage in passing and rushing of 3,739 yards. Thibault threw for 25 TD’s this season and 40 over the past two, in addition to rushing for 7 TD’s this past season and a total of 13 the past two seasons. All said-and-done, Thibault finished his high school career with the Scotties with 53 Total TD’s and a completion percentage of 57% on 399 attempts with only 14 interceptions. All-State receiver and future Carroll College Saint signee Fossum ended this past season with 43 receptions, 713 yards and 11 TD’s for a two-year total of 1,323 yards and 17 TD’s. Fossum averaged 18.5 yards per reception over the past two seasons. On defense this season, Fossum led the team with 7 interceptions. Keil Krumwiede, another future MSU-Billings Yellow Jacket signee, was only able to play in the final two playoff games this season and completed his last catch of his career for the go-ahead score against Conrad. Krumwiede had six receptions for 106 yards and two TD’s this season and a two year total of 716 yards and nine TD’s. All-State selection Tanner Roness led the defense the past two years as an Inside Linebacker, and led the team in tackles this season with 112, with 45 solos and led the team with 11 tackles for losses. At Fullback on offense, Roness had 574 rushing yards on only 50 carries for a 7 yard per-carry average. In addition, Roness had 151 receiving yards on only 15 receptions. However, Roness’s biggest attribute on offense was his blocking skills. Dallas Capdaville, the fifth All-Stater on the team, starred at both offensive line, running back and defensive end for the Scotties. Sophomore running back sensation Benji Phillips led the rushing attack for the team with 656 yards on 89 carriers and 8 TD’s, for an impressive 7 yards

per carry average.Following the 1st round playoff game against Eureka, Coach Liebelt received a very inspirational card and letter from a player and his family from Eureka regarding their experience coming to Glasgow. The card and letter reads as follows:

Scotty football continued from front

November 5, 2014

Glasgow Scotties Football Team; Coaches; fans; families and entire town, At the request of our son Owen Davis #59, our family wanted to send you a little note to let you know what a great experience we had meeting your program in the first round of playoffs this season. While we clearly wish the outcome would have been in our favor we wanted to thank you for the class act you all were! Your team played with class, dedication and determination – there were no late hits, no taunting, no negative comments regarding calls by the officials, nothing that was anything but top notch! Your Coaches did an amazing job of controlling your team on the field and the sidelines while still allowing the team to enjoy their success – class act all the way! Your fans were great – very little negative comments regarding calls or outcomes of plays (there may have been a couple, but that is to be expected – as we all understand that’s part of being a true fan!). Your families were welcoming and polite both before and after the game. They took the time to welcome us to your school, wish us good luck and then a safe trip home. Your entire town was behind your team and that was evident in the balloons, signs, etc. at almost every establishment in town. At the businesses we stopped at they welcomed us to the game, wished us luck; and all thanked us for driving “all the way out here for a game.” As Owen stated, “that was a lot of fun – that team was awesome and great to play.” We completely agree! You as a school, as coaches, as parents and as a town should be extremely proud of the character of your players! We wish you continued success in this season! Owen hopes you win it all so then we will know we lost to not only the classiest team in the state, but also the best! Thank you again and we look forward to playing you at some point in the future! Sincerely, Owen Davis #59 and family – Shan & Carmen Davis

Above: Greeting card from the Owen Davis Family!
