  • Dear Parishioners,

Happy New Year to all of you! Manigong Bagong Taon! Feliz Ano Nuevo!

One Life LA is coming up on Saturday, January 19. This is an exciting day filled with gifted speakers. It’s all about promoting a greater respect for life. Come and stand in solidarity with other believers to promote a positive pro-life culture. The event begins at La Placita downtown at 12:30 PM. The event concludes at 4 pm and then there is a beautiful Mass at the cathedral at 5 pm. See Onelifela.org for more information.

We keep hearing stories of funeral Masses taking place at non-Catholic cemeteries. This is not permitted. Normally these so-called Masses are celebrated by priests who either do not have faculties (papers, proper authority) to celebrate a Mass anywhere or they are not on good terms with the archdiocese. This is not good. Funeral Masses are intended to be celebrated by ordained, valid and legal priests who have the authority to celebrate Masses in the archdiocese. Oftentimes people are misled into believing that their loved one is receiving a proper funeral when in fact, they are not!! Funeral Masses are intended to take place IN THE PARISH CHURCH or at a Catholic cemetery chapel.

Sometimes people make uninformed funeral decisions based on cost. At the death of a loved one is not the time to be nickeling and diming. We are talking about eternal life. You can’t put a price on that! Many people can so easily buy a nice car. Yet when it comes to eternal life, so many people don’t see the value of a funeral Mass at the parish. We need to think more clearly about these important decisions and make them prayerfully.

What we should really be doing is making our funeral plans in advance, before we go from here, before we die. Be specific. We need to save our own money, pay in advance and include specifics about our desired funeral plans and leave copies with various loved ones and attorneys for safekeeping. (In the same way, we should all have an Advanced Health Care directive set up in advance.)

Continued from “Family Matters … 15 Wise Insights from Padre Pio” (now known as St. Pio) in the National Catholic Register:

    13. Time spent in honor of God and for the salvation of souls is never badly spent.

    14. Do you not see the Madonna always beside the tabernacle? 15. You must have boundless faith in the divine goodness, for the victory is

    absolutely certain.

Happy New Year, Fr. Jim Bevacqua, Pastor 818-247-2222 x225, [email protected]

New Year’s Resolution: Become a mandatory reporter

Even if the legal requirements for mandatory reporting may not cover your specific position, as Catholics, we are called to protect the vulnerable at all times, and that may mean reporting on inappropriate behavior that puts a child at risk. The only way we can prevent abuse is to learn the signs and take ownership for the safety of children in our communities. To read more from the VIRTUS® article “Make a New Year’s Resolution to Become a Mandatory Reporter,” visit http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx.
