From the Desk of Fr. Michael

As many of you were as shocked as I to hear on the news that early Christmas Eve morning (Dec. 24), Our Lady of La Vang parish located off of NE Sandy Blvd and 54th Street in Portland, a per-son drove a SUV into the church vestibule and nave causing damage of close to $300,000.

Needless to say, any church that is intentional damaged causes great sorrow for us all, but this par-ticular church is close to my heart as my uncle, Fr. Minh, CSSP, was pastor there from 1975-2002. He was the one who built the church, which was completed in 1997.

It was the parish besides my home parish of Holy Trinity in Beaverton, that I remember most visit-ing especially during the Christmas holiday as our entire family would gather every Christmas day to visit with my maternal grandfather who resided there under the care of my uncle. It was a mini family reunion in December.

When I heard of the news, I reached out the pastor, Fr. Ansgar. I cannot even imagine having to prepare for Christmas Eve and Day Masses with the added burden of also having to deal with the Portland Police and local media, coordinating with the Risk Management Office of the Archdiocese of Portland, and communicating with parish staff. I naturally offered my prayers to Fr. Ansgar.

But as he was troubleshooting these issues, an amazing thing happened. Over 100 parishioner vol-unteers, many with construction or contracting expertise arrived and began to clean up the nave and vestibule, replacing the broken pews with folding chairs. Plywood was purchased and donated and windows were boarded up and temporary doors were created.

Fr. Ansgar said the proudest moment for him was when Bishop Smith, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese, arrived to provide support that he was able to witness the miracle of hours of hard work, dedication, and love had restored the church to be functional for Christmas Eve and Day ac-tivities.

I would like to think that if ever something like this would happen to any church in the Archdiocese or throughout the world, faithful parishioners would arrive and begin to pick up the pieces, repair and restore so that we may all continue to do what we are called to do which is to adore, worship and reverence God with all our gifts, talents, and presence.

In a sense, what happened at Our Lady of La Vang on Dec. 24 should remind us of what we cele-brate this weekend, the Feast of Epiphany. When we come bearing our gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh what we are offering is our very best in time, talent, and treasure to give glory to our God.

This is what those 100+ volunteers did and I am sure many more when they opened up their treas-ure to donate the needed material, they gave of their talent to restore seen in their hands to repair the parish, and they gave of their time in prayer with spiritual support as nothing can be done with-out the assistance of God.

So may we be all inspired by this witness of the parishioners of Our Lady of La Vang and continue to give of our gold in financial resources, our frankincense in talent in the various pastoral minis-tries, and our myrrh in our spiritual time of prayer. And may we adoringly offer it freely, openly, and generously for Jesus! Have a Blessed Week! ~Fr. Michael
