January 7, 2018 - The Epiphany of the Lord

This might be a good year to remember the Epiphany feast once celebrated three different epiphanies of Jesus Christ: the visit of the Magi, which revealed him to the nations; the baptism in the Jordan, when the Father revealed him as God’s servant; and the wedding at Cana, where he performed the first of his miracles in John’s Gospel.

Thinking of these three epiphanies together

reminds us that the focus of the Epiphany is about

much more than a thrilling tale of Magi from the

east and Herod’s jealousy. It is really a feast to celebrate the truth that Christ

came to save the whole world. That might be an especially important reminder

in this age when so many people treat immigrants and refugees as less than

human. It is especially poignant when we realize that many of the world’s

refugees today are huddled in the same part of the world where the Magi

traversed.

Middle School Youth Group Bowling Party

A good time was had by all at the Christmas gathering of youth at Wilsonville Lanes for a bowling

party on December 23rd. The boys teamed up and played against each other and the girls had their

own competition. St. Cyril is lucky to have youth group leaders Mary and Keith Folske who plan fun events.

THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

This is the Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord which is a remembrance of when the three kings arrived at the

manger to see the Newborn King. Seeking a new king who would be greater than any other current king is a

very noble gesture and it was not shared by King Herod. In fact, he pretended to want to find and worship

the new king only so that he could destroy him for he feared losing his own power and influence. They

brought Jesus gifts of great price: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. But it was the spirit of faith in the journey

to seek Jesus that was the true gift. They followed a star in the sky that led them to Bethlehem. It was not

an easy trip. They felt compelled to go and when they found Jesus, Mary, and Joseph in the stable they

bowed down to worship their true King, Jesus, the Son of God. Their journey to Bethlehem was a revealing

moment of God’s divinity in the world.

It was an epiphany, an important moment to

remember, and a message of great love and

respect for the covenant between God and his

people. This realization that God sent his Son

Jesus into the world was a great revelation!

Having been warned in a dream not to return

to King Herod, the three kings decided to

return home by a different route and not

report back that they found Jesus.

Thank You

for sharing

your talents

with the

members of

our Parish

Community!
