Plus Many Other Donation Venues

My friends of SLOT,

Amazing news! Anyone who has been around our fine Parish for any decent amount of time knows that Matteson, Richton Park, and Park Forest are not the most affluent communities on the face of the earth. What they ARE are the three communities that the bulk of our parishioners come to us from. We still draw from Frankfort, New Lenox, Joliet, Chicago Heights, Olympia Fields, and a variety of other ‘burbs, as well as from Indiana. Still, Matteson, Richton Park, and Park Forest are the biggest communities in our database. Our database is going to need to be updated again soon so that we can be sure that we have the most up-to-date information we can have.

The big news is that with the less than affluent area in which we live, our community gave over $340,000 this past year through the collection basket. Those numbers include collections from regular Sunday collections, holy days of obligation, the capital improvement fund, special archdiocesan and global second collections, special other donations (e.g. Christmas flowers), and the debt reduction fund. It’s really an amazing number, but it, again, only scratches the surface of just how much of a giving community we have. People are still making their payments on their To Teach Who Christ Is commitments. People are buying more and more Manna cards. People are still giving food and monetary donations to St. Vincent DePaul. People are still giving their time and talents to PADS, the Taste of O’Toole, the Craft Fairs, Café O’Toole, and so much more. It makes my heart leap for joy and it really should make you proud to be a part of this great parish. It really ought to also motivate you to seek out your neighbors in an effort to get more people through our doors.

You also know that none of our ministries are exceptionally large. We don’t have massive amounts of children in the Religious Education program, but the formation they are getting is quality. PADS is not technically a St. Lawrence O’Toole ministry, but it serves a great need in the community and we have people who are not O’Toole parishioners who come in to help in making sure the homeless are cared for. Our Ministers of Care, who bring communion to the homebound, to nursing homes, senior living facilities, and hospitals, is also top-notch. Our Kwanzaa ministry offers lots and lots of their time and talent for many different parish functions. This list is just a few ways O’Toole is O’Toole.

All of that being said, there is something that continues to be noted - many of our volunteers have been offering their time and talent for many years. Some of those volunteers are aging (and that is not a slight to the aged). We continue to need a new and vibrant set of faces who are willing to learn the ropes for our future. I’d rather not wait for our current volunteers to get to a point of not being physically able to perform their ministries. We are always up for training the next generation of “go-to” people so that the Parish can go on for many years to come. I cannot do it alone. My predecessors didn’t do it alone either. Please pray about volunteering in the future. And for those who have and are still doing their part, THANK YOU!

Deeply,

Rev. Michael Novick

January 7, 2018 ~ Epiphany: Today we celebrate the feast of the Epiphany, where the Magi find the newborn

king and offer him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. In the spirit of the Magi, please put your gift in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box so that comfort and peace can once again be given to a newborn child.

Café O’Toole is this weekend—.

January 6 & 7. January’s hospitality is hosted by The St. Lawrence O’Toole

Ushers & Greeters

We are holding another SAVERS DONATION DRIVE on January 13 & 14, 2018! So, while you are cleaning up after the holidays, and after you receive your new presents, empty out your closets, cabinets, basements, garages, and anywhere else where things have “accumulated” around the house. Then, bring them to O’Toole and keep your items out of landfills and help us raise funds. Our last drive earned us over $1,600, so let’s try to top this. Goods may be dropped off at the Parish Monday—Wednesday, from 7:30 AM—4:00 PM and Thursdays & Fridays from 7:30 AM—2:30 PM. Please CALL the office before you come. Keep it green while you clean!

Our MANNA program this Christmas season has been a wonderful success! We are continuing

this easy and FREE fundraising program. We will be in the back of Church each weekend with Cash & Carry cards, and we will be placing an order every week, resuming Monday, January 8. So, remember, we all NEED to eat, we all drive or ride in cars, we sometimes eat out, our family and friends have birthdays…..the list goes on and on….The possibilities are endless. So, please remember to use our Manna program, because like we said before Christmas, it is a no stress, easy, and most of all, profitable program for our Parish, that doesn’t cost you anything extra. Any questions about Manna, please stop at the MANNA table at the back of Church or call the Parish Office anytime Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM—4:00 PM. Please remember Manna orders are due to the Parish Office by 9:00 AM on Monday morning. Our NEXT MANNA order is Monday, January 8.

Next week, we will take up the Collection for the Church in Latin America. For many in Latin America and Caribbean, rural terrain and a lack of ministers are obstacles to practicing their faith. Your support to the collection provides lay leadership training, catechesis, priestly and religious formation, as well as other

programs to help share our faith with those who long to hear the Good News of Christ. Envelopes for this collection are in your monthly packets. To learn more, please visit www.usccb.org/latin-america.

Thank you for your generosity in this collection.

Living Stewardship January 7, 2018 ~

Epiphany of the Lord “..they fell down and worshipped him. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh...” - MATTHEW 2:11 Notice the order of events in the Magi’s visit. First, they knelt before Jesus and prayed to Him. Then they presented Him with their gifts. We, too, must take time to pray before we present our gifts to the Lord. We never know what God may be asking us to share!

STEWARDSHIP PRAYER For Those Who Serve Jesus, our saviour and brother, You teach us that to serve others Is to act in your name. Send your Spirit to guide us; Give us your wisdom and strength As we reach out to those who need your care. Fill us with compassion, and give us your peace So that we may be faithful witnesses of your love. AMEN

PLANNED GIVING Remember St. Lawrence O’Toole in your estate plans. St. Lawrence O’Toole has been blessed over the years to have received some generous gifts from parishioners and friends who have included our parish in their estate plans. If you would like to include SLOT in your plans, please contact the Parish Office.

A Prayer for Those Serving in the Military

Lord, Hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. We ask this in the name of Jesus, Our Lord and

Savior. Amen

If there are parishioners currently serving in the United States military, we would like to know. Please contact the Parish Office @ 748-6090 x100 or [email protected], and let us know the name of your dear one and they will be remembered in the prayers of our community and the name posted in the bulletin. Reflecting on God’s Word What are the major attractions in your area? Are they natural wonders, spectacular buildings, engaging activities, powerful people, works of art? We expect people to stream to see rock stars and queens, the Eiffel Tower, and the Grand Canyon. In today’s scriptures, however, we see “tourists” attracted to two very lowly and humble “sights.”

Jerusalem was sorry sight when the scripture from Isaiah was written. The prophet’s vision must have seemed impossible to those who heard this message. And yet, today Jerusalem is a major tourist attraction. We also know that through the Jews many other people—Christians and Muslims—have been attracted to the one Lord. Jesus himself must have seemed very weak and insignificant in comparison to the rich and powerful King Herod, and later on compared to the priest and Pharisees. Yet, even from his birth, people streamed to him. Like the “tourist” in today’s Gospel, people saw something in him that led them to worship and serve the Lord. And through him they came to understand what God intended for their life journeys.

Living God’s Word

The Church is the new Israel, called to attract all people to the Lord. We must be “the place where the child” is found today (Matthew 2:9). God’s glory shined through the Church and, despite our many flaws, we are called to become the “place” where everyone can find the Lord and “[do] him homage” (2:11).

A Prayer for “Renew My Church”

Lord Jesus, you speak to us today, as you spoke to holy men and women who have gone before us. In every age and in our own time, you call to us and say: Renew My Church. Pour out the gift of your Holy Spirit upon us, and so enable us

May we remain in the holy company of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the apostles, and all the saints. May their example and presence inspire us with patient confidence in the work of your grace. We ask this of you who live and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen

to hear you clearly to listen to each other attentively to imagine our future boldly to discern your direction wisely to persevere in your holy will courageously to stay together in charity to surrender our own plans readily to embrace the greater good to hand on your gifts to future generations.
